ATHENA’s POV.
I pull open my eyes again but somehow I wish I didn’t. This time, Stefan is standing by the window while Gemini is seated on the chair opposite me. She seems interested in her phone more than her environment and grace is nowhere to be found.
As soon as I make a move, Stefan turns to me, his face expressionless and he looks like he wants to be done with this and go away from here.
Grace told me you almost had a miscarriage,” he says after a while. He said it like it means nothing to him, like the baby inside of me does not belong to him.
“How careless were you?” He asks again. The more he speaks, the more I realise that I do not recognize the man in front of me. How can he be so calm like this? How can he act so casual like he is not worried about the baby
“My sister has always been careless, baby,” Gemini finally speaks as she raises her head to meet my gaze. I notice the triumphant look on her face like she has won the lottery—my lottery.
“You don’t even need to ask her that,” She continues, “she hardly takes care of herself so how do you expect her to take care of a child?”
“And what are you doing here?” I can’t keep the question to myself anymore. The fact that she is here is already triggering enough but I am not one to act based on some assumptions.
“Why are you here?” I ask again.
“I should be here,” she replies, “my man is here so—
“What?” I turn to Stefan who is busy staring at her like and is the most beautiful woman he has ever seen.
“Look Athena,” Gemini stands up and begins to walk towards me, “I hate to do this especially when you are in this state but I can’t keep lying to you anymore. Stefan and I are expecting so it wouldn’t have mattered if your baby died..”
My heart shatters into a million pieces as her words settle deep inside of me. I want to not understand what she is saying but I know what it means exactly. Seeing the two of them together in the hospital, the two of them acting all lovey dovey. Even if I want to pretend about it, I know there is something there.
“Stefan?” I call out to him as I pull my body off the bed, not minding the syringe that is attached to my hand. I immediately pull it out and throw it off. Blood pours out of my hand but the pain is little compared to the one that has enveloped my heart.
“Stefan?” I call my husband’s name again, coming face to face with him, “what the heck did she just say?”
“You shouldn’t have gotten out of bed,”
“Answer me!!” I yell at the top of my lungs, “what the heck is this woman saying?”
“Athena—
He tries to touch me but I shove his hand off, my eyes brimming with tears.
“I asked you a question, Stefan,”
“You heard her,” he finally snaps, “Gemini is carrying my child. There, you have it!”
For a few minutes, I stand still as his words settle in the pit of my stomach. I refuse to accept it, I refuse to believe it. I have always given Gemini everything she wanted right from when we were kids. I would give her my toy and my clothes if she wanted them. Father would ask me to share as the eldest and I always did without thinking twice. Even when we grew, I gave her everything. My room, my gadgets—every f*****g thing. But this one thing, she couldn’t let me have this one thing that I fell in love with for most part of my life.
My chest tightens at the thought of that. My whole body stiffens as his words continue to ring in my head. The two of them are having an affair and they are not bothering to hide it.
I take a step back from him until I crash against the bed but the pain does nothing to me, I don’t even feel it.
I just keep looking at the two of them, unsure of what to say or do.
“Athena—
“Get out!!” I say in a whisper, my whole body beginning to shake.
“Sister. You are taking it too far.”
“Get out,” I say again, pain shooting through my lower abdomen.
“You should take some rest,” Stefan still has the guts to keep talking, “we can discuss the divorce proceedings later,”
That is the straw that breaks the camel's back. I grab the pillow on the bed and fling it across the room. I don’t wait and grab the I.V stand and lunge at him but he is fast enough to grab a hold of my hand and push it out of my hand. I don’t budge, I grab his shirt but Stefan pushes me away, his hand colliding with my face in the process.
“You better stop this madness, Athena.” He yells, “you are not the first woman to get cheated on,” so you better behave yourself.”
My hand immediately flies to my face as the slap registers. Stefan had slapped me—the first time in his life.
“She has always been crazy,” Athena chips in and I turn my gaze to her. The anger I feel for Stefan is little compared to what I feel for the snake I call my sister.
She was supposed to protect me, to have my back as my sister but she goes around and sleeps with my husband. Even the goddess will shudder at the thought of what she has done to me.
“How dare you?” I hiss and lunge at her but Stefan is fast to grab me and push me away from her. His eyes darken and his jaw is clenched tight.
“Do whatever you want with me Athena but don’t you dare touch her, do you hear me?”
His voice is hoarse and his eyes are bloodshot. I have seen him angry but not this way and most importantly, not because of another woman.
“I will not spare you if anything happens to the woman I love or my child,”
“I am carrying your child,” I want to yell but no words come out of my mouth even as I open it. Only tears continue to fall out of my eyes.
“Get out,” I say again. This time, almost inaudibly, “or you know what? I will leave the room for you,”
I don’t wait for any of their responses as I make my way out of the room into the hallway looking half alive. My feets are bare and blood is dripping on the floor from where I had removed the syringe. My whole body is hurting. My face is burning from the slap but the only thing I want to do now is get away from everyone—from all of them.
I wanted to end it all but I would prefer if a total stranger ended my life than the people I call family.
Without thinking about it, I begin to run down the hallway not caring about the fact that my body can collapse any time soon.
