Meeting
The detectives stood over the dead body of the male victim. He was dead but of no apparent cause. Alan questions to no one in particular. "What could have caused this?"
Barry asks the coroner "Witnesses say it was almost as if he just dropped dead. But that's impossible, isn't it?"
The coroner replies "It could be a heart attack or an aneurysm of some kind but I'd need to perform an autopsy to be sure."
As the body is being loaded into the medical examiner's van a woman walks up to the detectives. "They aren't going to find anything." She tells them.
Alan "How could you know that? Are you a doctor?"
Woman "No I'm not a doctor, but I know what killed that man and it can cause what would appear to be a heart attack or an aneurysm, but the actual cause is something that your coroner wouldn't be able to detect. By the way, I'm Aronja. You both should probably at least know my name since we'll be working together."
Alan "But that's impossible. It has to be something he'd be able to detect..."
Aronja "I know this because there are 2 similar cases open in a different state that have the same problem. Both the victims died seemingly from either a heart attack or an aneurysm but neither of the victims had any prior brain or heart conditions that would have accelerated so quickly that it would kill them. And again, I know what killed that man but the only kind of person that can detect it is someone similar to it."
Barry "What do you mean?"
Aronja "I mean that what killed that man wasn't human, and I know what killed him because I am the same as it, just a little more disciplined than the one that killed that man, and before you have me checked into a mental hospital. I've been through the tests and they show I'm sound of mind and my DNA structure is similar enough to a human to pass for 1. I can just change forms occasionally."
Alan "You're insane! That you think we'll believe that story."
Aronja "You want a demonstration?" The detectives just look at each other with looks of disbelief on their faces when they look back Aronja has gone and a different woman stands in her place. Alan recognises some of her features to be similar to that of his high school sweetheart who had died a year before but he just couldn't find it in himself to let go of. Then Aronja changed her features again, whilst they watched this time. She changed to a woman who could pass for a twin of Barry's ex-wife who he still loved despite the fact that she had left him for another man a few months before. After showing the detectives a slight smirk Aronja changed her features back to the woman who had originally approached them. "Believe me now? By the way, Barry why would you continue to love a woman who cheated on you? She obviously didn't love you else she wouldn't have left you...."
Barry suddenly has Aronja by the throat "Don't ever bring my ex-wife into a conversation she has nothing to do with!" He threatens. Seemingly genuinely concerned for Aronja Alan gets Barry to release her.
"Calm down, we need her for the investigation. She's the only lead we have."
Aronja "It's not like he could kill me, but it would probably be a good idea not to touch me right now."
Barry answers near enough in a growl "Why's that? It's not like you're going to kill us?"
Aronja replies pointing slightly at Barry "No but touching me whilst I'm hungry, like now, can leave you noticeably weaker. Can also cause you to feel desire toward me which makes it kinda difficult for me to resist as that's the main thing I feed on. I, luckily, have very good control of my hunger."
Alan "What do you mean by feed?"
Aronja "Oh, don't worry. I won't feed on either of you on purpose. Not unless you ask me to anyway."She smirks slightly with the last sentence. "Either way, when I'm hungry it's best to stay away, I can only control it so much. Like when your starving and you happen upon a buffet, you can't always help having some of the food."
Barry "What does that mean? When you're hungry it's best to stay away. What, because there's a possibility you'll kill us?"
Aronja "Only those of my kind that have no control or don't care for you humans will kill you."
Alan "By no control, what do you mean?"
Aronja "I mean those that either has no idea or have just discovered their abilities and are unable to control them. In any case, unless both of you wish to be so weak that you can't continue without quite a bit of sleep, I need to feed. I'll see you both tomorrow at the precinct you work at."
With that Aronja walked away from the detectives whilst they both stared disbelievingly after her.
