Chapter 1: The Refusal
"I, Alpha Darius Thorn, do not want you as my mate or Luna." The words burst out in the courtyard like lightning breaking the silence. Aria's breath caught. Not only did her heart break, it exploded. The air left her lungs, leaving behind a hollow aching. All eyes were on her. A lot of pack members, fighters, and elders. They stood there in shock, waiting for her to say anything, under the full moon's silver light. But how could she? How does one recover from a death sentence like that? She was still wearing the ceremonial Luna robe. The ivory silk clung to her shaking figure, wet through from the rain that had began to pour only moments before the ceremony. Her fingers were still interwoven with exquisite golden threads from the sacred tying cord. This wasn't just a no. It was a public execution. "Alpha Darius, what is the meaning of this?" Elder Mayla’s voice pierced through the tension, sharp with astonishment. Darius didn’t waver. His face, once a refuge of warmth and affection, had hardened to stone. His cold gray eyes were impenetrable, devoid of anything recognizable. “She betrayed us,” whispered Beta Kael, coming forward like a serpent creeping from the darkness. “We found intercepted messages. She’s been in contact with rogue wolves. Sharing pack intel.” Gasps raced through the crowd. The phrase rogue was enough to raise hackles. But combined with betrayal? It was the ultimate sin. “That’s a lie!” Aria cried, her voice scratchy, throat tight. “I’ve never, I would never betray the pack. I’ve done nothing except serve” “Lies,” Kael snapped. “You were always too clever for your own good. You played the act effectively, but your bloodline is cursed. Your mother was a traitor, and now her daughter follows the same path.” Aria’s knees buckled slightly. Not from weakness, but from the weight of injustice. She wanted to scream. To tear apart the lies with her bare hands. But her eyes stayed riveted on Darius. He said nothing. The man who had embraced her under the stars and whispered promises of forever… now looked at her like she was nothing. A stranger. A threat. She took a shaky step forward. “Darius, look at me. You know me. You know I would never” “I don’t know you anymore,” he added gently. “And I can’t risk my pack.” It was the ultimate blow. Delivered not with wrath, but with icy indifference. Aria’s vision blurred. The rain mingled with her tears till she couldn’t distinguish which was which. She pressed her hand to her abdomen, over the soft swell that had only recently begun to grow. “I’m pregnant,” she whispered. “With your child.” Silence. The crowd stilled. Even the trees seemed to hold their breath. Darius’s gaze flashed. A crack in the armor? Perhaps. But it faded as swiftly as it arrived. Kael scoffed loudly. “How convenient. Just before she’s going to be cast away, she reveals she’s carrying the Alpha’s heir.” “I’m not lying,” Aria responded passionately. “He’s real. Our son. He’s the only piece of you I’ll ever have left.” The enforcers flanked her now. Their hands hovered on her shoulders, ready to transport her like a criminal. Darius turned aside. The act of turning his back on her stung worse than his words ever could. “Strip her of her title,” he commanded. “She is no longer Luna. She is no longer Shadowfang.” A single chime rang out from the bell tower above. One sound. Final. Absolute. As the guards lunged for her, Aria’s wolf surged. “Don’t touch me!” she shouted, backing back. Her eyes flashed gold, her might barely contained. “You may have rejected me, Darius Thorn, but the Moon Goddess sees all. And she knows the truth.” His back remained turned. So be it. Let him become a stranger. Let him forget the vows they previously made. She wouldn’t plead. Not for him. Not for anyone. As the enforcers grasped her arms, she let them to lead her out. But she held her chin high. Her robe dragged after her in the dirt, but she never stumbled again. They would remember this day. They would recall the day they cast her out… and let their genuine Luna slip through their fingers. --- The gates of the Shadowfang Pack slammed shut behind her with a final rusty groan. The boom echoed into the dark jungle, swallowing her whole. The rain hadn’t stopped. It poured harder now, drenching her to the bone. She collapsed to her knees beneath a crooked pine tree, clutching her stomach protectively. Her body ached. Her spirit trembled. But her son was still with her. His heartbeat, strong and steady, pumped through her like a beacon. She had nothing left. No home. No pack. No mate. But she had him. And that was enough to survive. No. It was enough to fight. Because one day, her son would grow. He would learn the truth. And the world would see the successor they rejected. She would raise him in the shadows if she had to. Train him. Protect him. Love him twice as hard. And when the time came, they would return. Not as rogues. Not as beggars. They would return as power. As revenge. As destiny. --- Far beyond the trees, back at the Shadowfang estate, Darius stood at the window of his private chamber, rain flowing down the glass like silent tears. His hand clung to the icy surface, watching the storm dissipate into the distance. A portion of him crumbled when she said the word “child.” But he couldn't let emotion govern him. Not now. Behind him, Kael entered the room, quiet as a shadow. “She’s gone,” he said. “Just as planned.” Darius’s jaw clenched. But he said nothing. Kael grinned softly. “You did the right thing, Alpha. The pack must always come first.” Outside, lightning shattered the sky again. And somewhere deep in the wilderness, the Luna who was sent out… was still watching. Still breathing. Still burning. And she would return.
