Chapter One
Marcello's father had summoned him into his office two years ago, he knew his father was about to ask him for the same thing he had been asking for the past two years; marriage. He was beginning to think his very existence was based on it. He took the seat adjacent to his father, unlike other people who sat before the mafia lord, Lucio Martini, he preferred the one resting against the wall beside the window. Marcello needed the air to cool off the steam he was emitting. One of his flaws was, he was quick to get angry. Lucio watched his son as he pulled harshly at his tie with his jaws clenched. He had taught him all the things he could think of, yet he was not able to teach him patience. Lucio clasped his hands, leaned back against his chair, and placed his clasped hands on his crossed laps. It was probably habit but unknowing to him, when he acts that way, he looks laid back and way younger than his age. There is a saying that wine gets better with age, that wine was Lucio and Lucio was the wine. His gelled-back peppermint hair only serves to add to his charm. "Have you chosen a bride", one thing about Lucio, he never beats around the bush. To him beating around the bush was equivalent to wasting time. Marcello leaned forward with his right elbow on his lap as he caressed his bottom lip with his right thumb. He glared at the floor before he grunted a response " No" He hated suits, they only served to constrict him. The only reason he wears it is for formality. "Since that is the case, then I have to choose for you", Lucio informed. Marcello didn't care, he was the heir to the mafia, and he knew choosing his bride was never his choice. It was all about connection and affluence. He would not be surprised if the man had already chosen one. Lucio pulled one of the drawers to his left to fetch something before he placed it on his table. He pushed the picture in his direction " Adalina Sokolov, heiress to the Russian Mafia. A strong woman that would make a great queen", He placed his elbow on the armrest and rested his cheek on his fist. A glint of admiration flashed in his black eyes and Marcello hardly heard his father praise a person. She had to be a piece of work to have had his father's approval. From what he had gathered which was too little, she was a deadly person, probably the deadliest in the Mafia world. Marcello's brow raised slightly in question "A Russian and an assassin? Lucio glanced at his son briefly " Her heritage is what makes her a fit and her talent is a plus", This marriage thing could go wrong at any time. It could bring down generations of hard work, yet if it by any chance worked out, the merger between the Russians and Italians would bring about fortune and affluence. Marcello picked up the picture. To marry a person for the rest of one's life; one would either be miserable or happy. Marcello had seen beautiful women, even Russian women but as he looked over her features; her grey emotionless orb that looked like it was staring back at him, her black hair and oval face, he knew there was no question of her beauty. They had gotten married, if they hadn't he would not be sitting here and being the subject of the meeting that was holding. He looked at the rug-covered floor unable to look up, what if he met her gaze. His teeth clenched at the pang of guilt that surged in his heart. He had really f****d up. They had a pact; they could live however they liked without interference with each other's life on the basis that no bastard child resulted from that. He thought he would be happy, he should have been. In comparison to her, he had taken a handful of lovers in the two years they had been married, and she had only taken two. He had felt so betrayed when he noticed that she was becoming besorted with his consigliere, although they had a pact but they should have never messed with each other's person. He hadn't been able to control his d**k, or maybe he had done it in spite to elicit a response from her; he slept with her personal maid. Yet he could not control the burning jealousy he had felt to see her look at another as if he was the only person she saw. He could not let it happen, not between his wife and his consigliere. And so, he proposed for them to stop messing around and focus on the future and she agreed. It was going so well, where had it all gone wrong. He chanced a glance at the woman sitting at the other end of the table. He once told her that she was supposed to sit by his left-hand side, but she had told him to protect his own heart from bullets, plus she was protecting herself from putting a bullet in it when he offended her. His queen, his woman, he had failed her. Two loud footsteps approached the table; his mother and a raven-headed beauty. His mother Lovetta was supporting the younger one whose name was Caralina. Adalina looked in their direction before looking away blankly, like they didn't deserve to be before her eyes. But there was something in their eyes, something taunting, but they knew better than to come any closer. What trick are they going to play this time. Adalina wondered what the meeting in the absence of Lucio was all about. Marcello's uncle Santino looked towards the guards flanking his nephew before he cleared his throat to get everyone's attention. Santino looked towards the consigliere, Damon before he leaned forward "We are gathered here because Marcello had broken his covenant", he paused and looked towards his queen, Adalina. Adalina's mind ran in miles, she looked towards the duo standing not far away. Caralina was wearing a trench coat, so she missed it at first glance. Caralina pulled away from Lovetta, she pulled her trench coat back to reveal a swollen belly, then placed her creamy hand to rub at it. Adalina's eyes glistened with tears that she was quick to hide. She was taunting her, reminding her of what she had lost. Her cat-like eyes looked away to look in the direction of the betrayal; was this what he meant by a new beginning, that they could wait for as long as she wanted before they tried for another child, when in fact he had a backup plan. Caralina had to have gotten pregnant when she got pregnant. Her child had just died barely three weeks before. No wonder Lucius was absent. Her eyes hardened as she looked at the coward who refused to meet her gaze. This betrayal, she would never forgive nor forget. Immediately she pulled her chair back, all the guards quickly placed their hands on their guns before she stood up. The Queen was mad, who dared sit when she stood. They all awaited the moment she erupted, but it never came. Although she was the queen, he was their king. Adalina burst into giggles; not chuckles, giggles. They had never heard the sound of her laughter before, sure she smirked and softly smiled, but it was unlike the heavenly sound that left her lips. It was too sweet, it made their skin crawl. She giggled so hard she held her belly and placed the other hand on the table for support and her eyes laced with tears. Marcello looked up at the woman whose giggles had sapped her energy that she had to bend over and hold the table. They might not know, but Marcello knew that the beast had just been awoke, and there was no way to put her to sleep. His lioness was out for the hunt/ to hunt. Then she hummed when she stopped. Pedro her personal bodyguard and cousin poured her a glass of water and she sighed after drinking it all. It was as if everything was in slow motion when she snatched the pistol from the guard behind her, before the guards could even move their arm, she had them gunned down. Before the one behind her could make a move, she pushed her hand backward without looking back and put her bullet in his belly. Thankfully, she didn't kill them. After all, she could not fault them for following the orders of their superior. Adalina turned in the direction of Caralina, and Caralina grasped the hand of Lovetta in terror. She has heard stories about this woman, but never believed and now she was seeing it live. She swaggered leisurely in her direction and as Marcello stood up in defense, his chair made a muffled noise on contact with the rugged floor. His breath came in pants, he might bear no feelings for Caralina, but the child was his to protect. His heir. Adalina should never do it. " Adalina" he called in warning Adalina stood before Caroline, her small nose almost touching Caralina's. She twirled the gun in her hand before trailing it from Caralina's temple down to her swollen stomach. She paused and watched as Caralina trembled as she tried to cover up her belly with her shaking hands with bated breath. Adalina could hear as she gulped in fear. Suddenly, she moved the gun back and shoved Caralina gently in the quivering arms of Lovetta "Stay out of my way" she sauntered out with Petro on her tail. Sighs of relief sounded out behind her. The moment she was out of sight, Marcello plucked the gun by his waist and multiple gunshots resounded in the hall as the men who pointed their guns at their queen fell to their deaths. Caralina could not handle the fright and fainted in the struggling arms of Lovetta.
