Chapter 2

Present Day  I couldn’t believe what I was seeing and feeling. I was on my way to Maximus Richfield’s home, the multi-millionaires mansion in Beverly Hills. The palm trees on either side of the car and the huge houses that looked more like malls, lined up on each side of the road. The smell of the leather from the chairs in the limo filled my nose, not stuff that the boys in my neighborhood wore. The chance that I’m been given is one of a life time, coming from a terrible background filled with abuse and neglect. I studied and worked  my ass off and I came first place in my class and managed to get a scholarship to study nursing and now I’m here, on my way to being Maximus Richfield’s care giver. The mini bar on the side of the limo held all the kind of drinks that you could imagine, so I picked a can of coke. I mean I couldn’t pick that delicious red wine, no ways was I couldn’t arrive on my first day of work drunk. The limo came to a halt and from the window there was a big gate with the initial ‘R’ on it. The gates opened up and there stood the biggest mansion I had ever seen in my life, bigger than the ones we had just passed. The car drove into the big gates of the mansion and drove passed the long drive way. Right in front of the marbled steps towards the house stood a fountain of an angel spewing water from its mouth. The limo came to a halt and not long my door was opened for me the chauffeur, who was a nice old man might I add.   The sun scorching hot burnt my skin as I exited the car, I guess the air conditioning in the car must have created the perfect illusion of the perfect weather, but then again we were in Los Angeles. “Welcome madam to the Richfield mansion, hope you enjoy your stay” I nodded at him in agreement and we made our way through the big finely glazed oak door. If the outside didn’t impress me enough the inside clearly shot my nerves into the sky. Inside the entrance of the house was clearly expensive carpet and beyond that white marbled floors that made its way through to the staircase. A rounded lady, mad her way to us with a big smile on her face. She wore a maid’s uniform so clearly she was a member of the staff. Her silver white hair showed that she had clearly lived beyond her years. “Good afternoon dearest, my name is Maria and I am the head maid in the Richfield mansion” I quickly raised my hand to greet the nice lady, Maria. “I’m Anastasia and I’m honored to meet you” Maria smiled at me and escorted me into the finely decorated elevator, completed with what I must guess the most expensive wood that money could buy. The doors of the elevator opened and a long hallway appeared with cream carpets and on each side of the carpets where doors that ran down never ending hallway. “Come on dear” Maria nudged at me and carried my belongings and unlocked a beautiful wooden door with engraving onto it. The room was bigger than anything I’d ever seen. It was way bigger than the tiny apartment that I lived in as a child with my mom and dad and let’s not forget the dodgy people that appeared there more often than most. Maria placed my bags down and gave me a rundown of my room, which felt more like an apartment that I couldn’t afford even in my wildest dreams. Maria gave me a tour of my room where I found out that I had a joint bathroom fitted with a marbled bath and all-purpose shower. I also had a walk in closet, which I had no doubt that the little luggage I carried could fill the walking closet. I also had a queen size bed in my bedroom with closets and cupboards lined at almost every corner of the room. A flat screen 3D TV in my big living room. Right before Maria had left she informed me that supper was at 6 pm sharp and that was when I was to meet both Mr and Mrs Richfield. I took a sigh of relief when Maria left I threw myself onto the bed because 5 years ago I would never have believed that I would be here in mansion like this, working for one of the richest man in Los Angeles. I began unpacking my clothes and placing them into the closet and that’s when I realized that I really didn’t own that much cloths, when I turned my attention to the watch, I realized that I had less than an hour before supper. For some odd reason the nerves began to rise and suddenly this all became overwhelming to me. I took a quick shower and I must admit that washing in a fancy shower had a way of relaxing one a bit, also because I didn’t have to worry about the water bill that I’d have to pay. I mean my contract did stipulate that in addition to my salary I’d receive an allowance, food and accommodation. I quickly pulled my hair bad into a ponytail and dressed in a simple floral dress and simple lip gloss, I didn’t want to look extra.   Maria just like an angel that she is appeared and took me all the way from the elevator through to the living room and told me to sit down and wait for my employers to come. There was a whisper of voices making its way to me and it got louder and louder and louder and two people appeared. It was both my employers. Mrs Richfield a slender lady that looked like she had just fallen out of a Victoria secrets magazine had long dark brown hair, light blue eyes, long legs that went on for days and wore dark red dress. Besides her was her husband Mr. Richfield, who wore a blue suit was seated in his wheelchair specially designed for him to man-oeuvre himself around. His light grey eyes didn’t seem to have any light in them and worst of all he didn’t smile and the lines on his forehead showed that clearly this man wasn’t one to mess around with. Even with his jet black hair clearly styled, it didn’t seem to brighten his appearance proving that, when you were unhappy no amount of dressing could cover that up. “Good evening and you must be Anastasia? “ His wife Mrs. Richfield held her hand out to greet me when a warm and welcoming smile on her face. “Yes ma’am “ “Oh please do call me Linda. This over here is my husband Maximus but you can call him Max” “Yes Mrs Lisa I’ll –“ “No you will not call me Max, in fact you will address me as Mr Richfield. You are my employee and not my friend understand? Let’s hope you’ll last longer than the other nurses before you”. For a moment I was completely baffled and embarrassed at the same time. One minuet his wife was nice to me and just like a flip of a switch her husband was the total opposite of all that Mrs. Linda represented. “Yes Mr Richfield” “Oh and one more thing, I’m up at 6 am sharp” “Yes Mr .Richfield” I answered him, but the man was already making his way to the dining room in his electric chair. I heard stories of the kind of man he was, but I didn’t know he could be this mean. His wife came closer to me and tried to smile at me a bit. “I’m so sorry about Max’s behavior… he hasn’t been doing well lately and its irritating him and he’s lashing out at everyone including me” “It’s okay Mrs Linda, I understand”   I smiled trying me make it seem like it wasn’t such a big deal. Mrs Linda walked t me the dining room where we all proceeded to have our dinner. Throughout the supper his wife kept feeding him and I stayed away from him tried my best not to stare.
