Chapter 3

My alarm clock rang at 5 am in the early hours of the morning and from then, I was dashing for my life. The last thing I wanted was to  get fired on my very first day of work and be sent back to that tiny apartment, in that tiny area that I wanted nothing to do with. It’s amazing how much being here made me realize that I despised where I came from, only been here for a day and a half and already I’ve gotten used to the Beverly Hills lifestyle. By 5:45 I was done and on my way down the hallway, 4 doors down from mine to Mr. Richfield’s room and before I could knock, his wife walked out looking  beautiful. Her hair and makeup were on point , honestly I couldn’t blame her she was rich after all. “Oh! good morning Anastasia” “Good morning Mrs— I mean good morning Lisa and how are you doing this early morning?” “I’m doing fine I guess. Uhm what are you doing up this early morning?” She looked confused, but I couldn’t figure out what all the confusion was about “Mr Richfield asked me to be ready by 6 am and I’m 15 minutes early” Lisa rolled her eyes and placed her hand on her hip and taped her feet on the floor then with a quick flip, she slapped her hand onto her forehead. “You know at this stage this man is going to end up pushing every nurse away, by the looks of it I might not even have any staff left if he keeps up like this” It took a whole minuet for the truth to hit me and that’s when I realized it, that I’ve been played a fool by the most ruthless man in the world and almost the richest man in the world. I hide my anger by smiling at Lisa.   “You know what Anastasia, he has a bell that he rings when he needs assistance and he can actually use both his hands if he feels the need. In the meantime you can run along and have breakfast and I’ll be gone for a few days” “Where will you be going Lisa” As soon as those words came out of my mouth that’s when I realized that I shouldn’t have asked it,but instead of being scolded at Lisa smiled at me. “The girls and myself are just going out to have some fun for the weekend. You know get away from the guys for a while” She winked at me and I smiled back at me. I watched Lisa  walk into the elevator and just like a blur the elevator door closed.  I balled my fist and once again I mentally knocked my head against the wall. But I shouldn’t be getting mad at him, because he was the boss after all and he could whatever he wanted.   I sat down in the dining room having my breakfast and not like the usual breakfast I was used to having, this was the movie type of breakfast. There was croissants on the table, coffee or tea to choose from and all types of assorted cheeses, it hurts me to say this but I’m addicted to the rich life. Maria appeared next to me at the dining table and startled me making me spill my coffee a bit. “Oh Anastasia! Forgive me I didn’t mean to startle you” “Oh no its okay Maria” I the wiped the spilt coffee from the table and from my lap and focused my attention on her with a smile on my face. “Okay in that case I just wanted to inform you that its nearly 7 am and Mr Richfield just called for you”   The way in which Maria had said that didn’t sit well with me. The worried look on her face didn’t make anything sound better at all. I smiled back at her and removed myself from the table and just like clockwork Maria began cleaning up after me. Every step I took out of the elevator onto the second floor rang in my ear. I stood at Mr Richfield’s door and took a deep breath before I knocked onto his door. “Come in!”  he yelled back and at this point I wish he simply said ‘go away’ that would have sounded so much better than facing him. I entered the room and if I though my room was  big his was at least 3 times bigger than mine and that was only the living room. “Mr Richfield, I’m here!” I shouted hoping he could hear me.  Of course he can hear you, he's quadriplegic not deaf. I thought to myself. “I’m inside the room dammit” I heard him yell in the direction of the door on my right side and I quickly ran into it before the man got even more mad at me.  As soon as I unlocked the door a very unpleasant Mr Richfield was staring back at me. He laid in his bed piled with pillows of every kind, propelling him forward and the sheets covered him all the way to his torso. Perhaps the most amazing thing was how perfect the sun shone on his messy hair, changing the color from its normal black to light brown. The sweat that tripped down from his neck made him seem like he was glowing so early in the morning and those muscles built like steel could make one forget that he was simply quadriplegic. But when I looked back into his blue eyes, it quickly brought me back to reality that this man clearly didn’t like me at all. “Good morning Mr Richfield” “What is so good about the morning if I may ask?” his question clearly baffled me but I tried to remain positive about it. “Well the sun is shining and the birds are chirping and—” “And I’m still bed ridden, depending on some girl who just came in yesterday who has to do everything for me including feeding me, washing and obviously seeing the family jewels!”.  I knew that Mr Richfield was and angry man but I didn’t know that he could be this angry…  mean all that hate just pilling up deep inside him was probably boiling toxic. I tried to look away from his face and focused my attention onto the clean and probably priceless carpet that I stood on. “Look at me!” yelling so loud that it startled me and I had to look back up at him— a small smirk appeared on his face but I knew damn well that it had sarcasm written all over it. “Don’t pity me little Anastasia I might not be able to move more than eighty percent of my body but I do have my money, which makes able people like you do my bidding. Grab my waterproof chair for me, I need to take  a shower” I  began moving toward the chair and I was stopped by him once more. “One more thing, if I say be here by 6 am you better be here by 6 am sharp, I hope we understand one another clearly” “Yes sir I’ll understand you clearly” I got the chair ready for him and quickly placed him in a position which allowed me to transfer him onto his chair with ease. I pushed the chair into the shower which was specially designed for him, like the rest of the house. I began peeling off his cloths and the whole time his eyes was closed. I removed his trousers from his body all though this time I tried to look away from the ‘family jewels’. As soon as the water began to run and hit his face, a sign of relief crossed his face because if he couldn’t feel the rest of his body at least he was granted the ability to feel movement in both his hands and his face. All throughout drying his body and dressing Mr Richfield, In the cloths that was obviously placed onto the bed for him by someone other myself I kept thinking that what if this man was clearly unhappy and money didn’t really buy happiness. Is he crazy ,what would give to have all this money. But then again people like Lisa and Mr Richfield were born into money and they didn’t know the struggles that most of us had to go through. They didn’t have worry about whether they would eat anything tonight or if child services were going to come to get you because your mom as drugged out of her mind. “Where’s my wife?” he startled me so much that I didn’t hear a word he said so I just stared at him. “For the last time where’s my wife!? For goodness sake I’m the disabled one not you” “So sorry sir but your wife went out” For a few second he didn’t say anything and he was deep in thought. “Did she tell you where she went?” “She said that she’ll be going out with friends for the weekend” He just nodded but it kept me thinking, didn’t it hurt him that his wife was out for the weekend leaving him at home in the hands of a stranger? I couldn’t read his facial expression other than it looked cold from the angle which I was staring at. Rich people problems I guess I’ll never know.
