CHAPTER 1
Stephanie's heart ached from a deep, all-consuming grief as she sat at the window and stared out into the cloudy weather. Her head was filled with recollections of the life she had previously had, a life that had passed through her fingers like grains of sand, while the quietness in her apartment seemed heavier than ever. Her marriage had ended just a few weeks before, and while she had anticipated that, it still broke her heart. Despite everything, she had made an effort to remain strong and cling to her husband, but love couldn't solve everything.
Tom, her husband and a soldier, had always been motivated by the desire to start a family and have kids of his own. Tom had said clearly from the beginning of their marriage that having children was his goal and something he had always desired. He would frequently discuss it, particularly when he returned home on leave from his deployments, his voice full of hope and desire. A little part of him feared he may not return one day, and he was determined to leave a legacy behind.
He would remark, "I want my son or daughter to be waiting for me when I return from another tour." "Steph, I have no idea how much time I have left. You are aware of the nature of my work. It's highly unpredictable.
With a forced grin, Stephanie would nod, hoping he wouldn't see the mounting fear she was feeling. Whenever he felt anxious, she would attempt to console him by assuring him they had time and would have children when the time comes. She had concealed the truth from him and everyone else, but she knew it in her heart.
The reality that a child may never arrive.
Tom's impatience had risen with every year that went by. Tension-filled conflicts replaced hopeful conversations about children. Stephanie saw that his desire for a child had turned into an obsession as his tolerance ran out.
After he got back from another tour, they spent a night together sitting on the sofa with a gentle TV playing in the background. Tom felt agitated, anxious energy bouncing off his legs. At last, he turned to face her, his voice full of frustration.
"Steph, years have passed." With tears and rage in his eyes, he said, "We've been trying, but nothing is happening. I'm not sure how much longer I can hold out. I want to know whether we can even become parents.
With her fists clenched in her lap, Stephanie took a sharp drink. "Yes, Tom, we will. All we have to do is wait. It will happen when it is ordained to.
"Patient?" he ridiculed. "For how long do you want me to wait? I'm not getting any younger. What would happen if I had an incident? What happens if I never return? I have to know that there will be someone who will bear my name after me. Why are you unable to comprehend that?
She fought back tears as she said, "I do understand." But worrying about it wouldn't make a difference. All we need is more time.
Tom got up and gave a shake of his head. "More time? Steph, it's been years. What is the estimated amount of time left to us? I can't go on acting as if nothing is wrong when it is. I need answers.
With a sinking heart, Stephanie watched as Tom left. She was aware of where this was going, and she was starting to feel too burdened by her secret. With every day that went by, she could feel their marriage coming to an end. Tom's patience was wearing thin. He had been patient for far too long. What was even worse was that she had known all along that this day would come.
She would need to perform a miracle in order to give him the child he so much desired.
Now, as she sat by the window, Stephanie allowed her thoughts to wander to the simpler times in her life, the carefree, reckless days of her youth. She reflected on her time in college, the wild evenings and thoughtless choices that had brought her to this point. She thought of Owen, her first romantic interest, the guy responsible for a great part of her agony.
Owen was charming and had an overwhelming attraction. Their relationship had been hot and passionate as they had fallen in love fast. It had also been careless, however. During her youth and innocence, Stephanie committed errors that would follow her throughout her life.
Throughout her relationship with Owen, she had been pregnant many times, but they had never been prepared to start a family. They decided to end the pregnancy each time, believing they would have plenty of time to settle down and have a family when they were ready.
However, one of those abortions turned out very wrong. She eventually lost the ability to get pregnant due to complications that came as a result of the abortion. She would never be able to bear a child, the doctors had informed her. Her womb was irreparably damaged.
Though Stephanie had never told Owen, she had been saddened. She had never disclosed this to anybody. And after their breakup, she made an effort to move on and start a new life. After meeting Tom, she was able to temporarily put her past behind her. She had persuaded herself that maybe, just perhaps, everything would turn out okay. However, she had always known the truth in her heart.
She was sitting in her empty apartment now, flashing back to her carefree college days. She had lied to Tom about many things back then, but none of them had been as bad as this one. This was not fair to him. Her past wasn't supposed to bring him any pain.
In the hopes that he would never find out, she had attempted to hide the truth from him for as long as possible. She had even managed to persuade herself that maybe there was a little possibility, a miracle that would enable her to bear him the child he always wanted. But when Tom found out the truth, that optimism was dashed.
It had occurred on one of their frequent trips to the physician. They tried everything to get pregnant, including fertility treatments, but nothing was successful. The family doctor had gently informed Tom that he would not be getting the answers he had finally asked.
Tom's expression when he found out... Stephanie would always remember it. He had been unable to handle the pain, or the anger. That day, he had left and never turned back.
Stephanie found herself abandoned, her marriage imploding all around her, and her relatives feeling resentful and let down by her. When she got married to Tom, they were all so full of hope and confidence that she would eventually settle down and start the family they had always desired for her. However, they were now enraged with her for the falsehoods she had spoken and the secrets she had kept all these years.
She was eager to find a way to put things right and to make it up to them. However, how was she able to? How could she mend a life that had been shattered beyond repair?
One idea filled her as she sat there, peering out into the rain.
Would it really be her fault alone? What if this was the result of her reckless decisions? What if she's not able to put things right again ?
Her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of her phone ringing on the table. Her pulse was pounding as she snatched it up and saw his name flashing on the screen.
Owen was the one.
Her mind was buzzing with questions as she glanced at the phone, her heart skipping a beat. He called, but why now? What could he possibly want from her after all these years?
She answered the phone with shaking hands and a voice that was hardly audible above a whisper.
"Owen?"
His voice reached her ears, smooth and familiar, after a moment at the other end.
Stephanie, please we need to talk.
She had made a great effort to leave the past behind, but all of a sudden it was returning to haunt her.
