Kristel’s POV
Being the Campus Queen with a controlling mother is never good, in fact it’s a disaster! Kristel that and Kristel this, it is annoying, it makes me wish that I’m not even born. She has to control everything I do. Heck, even her marriage to my father is controlled.
The good thing being a Jones is that I am living in this huge house where I can do anything I want and can indulge from the wealth we have. Of course my mother tells me I shouldn’t spend too much but, who cares? Besides she has lots of it.
I remember the announcement last Friday. She never told me about it because she’s always busy, I even rarely see her at home. I don’t know why she’s going to do it, maybe it has something to do with her controlling everything.
The sudden knock on my door pulled me out of my thoughts, honestly it’s not a knock, the person knocking actually banging on my door. And if I don’t open it now, my door would be destroyed.
“Who is it?” I asked, then I realized I can’t even hear my voice because of the loud music playing in my room, so I turned it off.
“It’s us,” replied the voice on my door. I heard some voices talking, then my memory told me that they were suppose to come today. Climbing down from my bed, I went to open the door.
“Your music is too loud the whole house can hear,” Ashley said.
“I’m sorry, I forgot you were coming,” I replied as they crash in my room.
Ashley is the one closest to me among my group of friends. Her father is the town’s vice mayor. Since my father is the mayor, our fathers were always together whenever there is a public event. The townspeople say that they were the best pair, they have done lots of project together.
“Guess what we brought with us!” The smiling Sophia said, holding a can of beer on her hands.
Sophia is the captain’s daughter. They live simply, on a not too small house. Her father was forced by mom to live simply and to remain as the captain because it would balance my father’s reputation. I know why my mother wanted me to be friends with her. As I am the face of Jones at the academy, I too need to befriend her for public reputation. That I can be friends with people with simple lifestyle.
“We know you want this badly after the surprise quiz last morning,” Brittany said as she closes the door.
She is a daughter of a well-known businessman, just like Alquette. Oh I remember that girl. She were hanging out with that Fern girl on the first week of school! It infuriates me to know it, knowing that she is a potential rival.
“Yeah, I was surprised Ms. Moore complimented the new girl. She used to do that to you,” Ashley hints as she drink her own beer.
“Me too, I mean she only do that when you have the most correct answers,” Tiffany adds, handing me the can of beer she just ipened. She’s the daughter of our family’s lawyer. Her father handles everything when it comes to law.
“Damn that b***h!” I yelled, glaring at the door and gulped the liquid from the I am holding. My tongue tasted the bitter liquid as it burns my throat.
“When will you mother come home?” Alquette asked. I cursed as she reminds me that we will be having a family dinner tonight.
“Let’s only finish up a can of beer, my mother will be coming home a little early,” I told my friends.
“Oh, your mother is such a party bummer,” Brittany reacted.
“Damn she is, but I can’t know my rebellious side,” I replied. She will be enraged if she learns what I do when she’s not around. I can’t let her control me as she control my father.
After drinking and talking about some random things, my friends went home. They know I have to fix myself for the dinner. I’m going to be the lady my mother wanted me to be.
It was already dark when I’m done making myself presentable to my mom. I put on a dress, and light make up. I just curled my hair and allowed it to show its bounces. A minute later, there’s a gentle knock on my door.
“Ma’am, your mother is asking you to come down for dinner,” a maid informed me.
“Okay, let’s go down. We don’t want them to keep waiting,” I said with a gentle smile. I hate doing this!
We walked to the dinning room silently. I am a little bothered if my mom knew about the quiz this morning. Usually Ms. Moore informs my mother everytime we have a quiz. When we arrived, my parents are already sitting on the elegantly arranged table.
“Good evening mom, dad,” I greeted them respectively, keeping the gentle smile on my face.
“Good evening my child,” my mother replied.
I look at my father who just nod at me. I do not mostly interact with my father, nor do I see him regularly, it is only during public events and dinners like this and I hate it. It only gives my mother more opportunity to control me.
“Take a sit my child,” my mother said and I followed. Making sure to make my movements graceful which pleases her.
As soon as I sat down, my mom gave a sign to the maids and they began serving our dinner. We ate in silence, only the sounds of our plates is the sound that can be heard. It was always like this.
When we were having dessert, my mother began talking.
“Calix, the election is near. You have to win the election,” my mother told my father with so much authority.
Her voice is not the gentle one she use when she talks with me. That is what I am afraid of, that when she learns about my rebellious actions, she would start talking to me like how she talks to my father.
“I am doing my best to be the next governor of this town,” my father replied nonchalantly.
“Good. Remember what my father told you about the election, use it when necessary,” my mother said and gracefully chew the salad on her mouth.
“I will,” my father shortly replied.
“How about you my child, how’s school?” she asks me, using he gentle voice.
“It was good mother,” following her gentle voice, I replied.
“Glad to hear it,” she said as her plate clinks.
“By the way mother, what did you mean during the announcement?” I tried to make my voice sound polite, enough not to ruin her mood.
“You’ll know during the ball, it’s a surprise,” she replied. I didn’t ask further more, she would be irritated.
After finishing my dessert, I excused myself saying that I still have a homework to finish. It was a lie. I just can’t continue with my act, I feel disgusted to myself pleasing my mother. When I reached my room, I put the act away and relaxed.
