28 LEVI Torn in two. The saying held real meaning for me as I hurried after Lil regardless of my desire to stay with Zeke, my bare feet slapping the sidewalk and causing an ache through my backside with every step. “Lil!” I whisper hollered, not wanting to call any more attention to us than I already did wearing nothing but shorts as she rushed to escape what she’d seen. I caught her before she climbed into the car. “Lil, please. Please let me talk to you.” “Are you going to offer an apology?” She tossed her purse and keys onto the driver seat and spun, her dark eyes luminous in the night. It was what I should have said—first thing. That I was sorry for cheating. But I wasn’t, and rather than get weighed down by shame, only an ache settled in my chest over the knowledge I’d hurt her.
