Chapter 2

Caleb, Ashley, Julia, Jack, and I stood in a line side by side as Kirk walked in front of us all. We were all packed for the mission and it was time to fly to New York which is where the mission will be held. The FBI headquarters are in Virginia, so we had to take a plane to get to New York.   "I'm proud of you five to be brave enough to take the challenge of attempting this mission. This mission is not like your other missions. This mission is much more dangerous even though it might not seem like it right now." Kirk said to us five.   He walked over to me and smiled slightly.   "Skylar will lead the mission. Skylar, who would you appoint to be second in command?" Kirk asked us.   "Caleb." I said firmly.    Caleb has always been second in command when I was the leader. He was my brother and I've always felt a close connection with him.   "Good luck to all five of you then. It's time for you to set off." Kirk said as we started walking towards our private plane.   Some men took our luggages and piled them onto the plane. We all got on and found our own seat. Right before the plane door closed, Kirk walked in and looked at us all seriously.   "One last thing," Kirk started off saying in a monotone voice that caught everybody's attention, "I will be more than surprised if all five of you come back alive. Be careful. You never know who somebody really is."    With that, Kirk stepped off the plane and we took off. I looked at the others to see them paler than usual.   "We'll live." I reassured them simply.   "You guys have a higher chance of living." Julia said from beside me.   "Why's that?" I asked.   "You guys have gone on more missions than me and I've failed a couple missions whereas you guys haven't ever failed once." I stared at her sympathetically.    She had a point. She does have the higher chance of dying. I held her hand comfortingly.   "I'll protect you. You won't die. I promise." I said and Julia looked at me with a small smile.    As I let go of her hand, I was about to take a nap, but I caught Caleb's look. His look was filled with sadness. I quickly looked away with guilt in my eyes. He knows that the last time I said those words were to my brother. He's dead.   It was eight years ago when I was only ten. It was the same year when Caleb and I joined the FBI. I guess you could say that my brother was sort of suicidal at the time. He was two years older than me, but I knew something was wrong.    In the middle of the night, I woke up, in need of a drink of water. I crept downstairs and saw my brother standing there. I ran up to him and hugged him from behind, trying to scare him, but he didn't even acknowledge me.    I walked in front of him and saw a knife stuck in his stomach. I saw how his arms curved in so that they were stuck to his body. I gasped and stared at him in horror as I realized that it was my fault.    When I hugged him, he must've been holding the knife in his hand. That means when I brought his arms towards his body from the hug, I brought the knife towards his body as well.    I screamed which caused the whole house to wake up. I saw his chest rise and fall and I felt a slow heart beat against his chest, so I knew he was still alive. I promised him that he wouldn't die, but when my parents came down and realized that I caused this, they didn't even try to help my brother. My parents simply tossed him out into the lake in our backyard.    I was screaming and pleading with them, but they forced me to go back to bed. My parents have always favoured Caleb and I more than my other brother, so I guess they were just trying to protect me from having to go to jail.   When I went up to my room, I stared out the window and saw my dead brother's body floating at the top of the water upside down. I cried into my pillow that night. I couldn't believe what I just did. It was all my fault.   Then next morning, I looked out the window again, but my dead brother wasn't there. Maybe he sunk. Maybe his body was eaten. Maybe he already disintegrated to dust. I didn't know how he wasn't floating anymore, but I just knew he was dead.   ***   "SKYLAR!" I heard somebody yell my name. I looked around the room I was in and realized that it was just the private plane. I felt water on my face and I brought my hand up to feel it. I quickly realized that I've been crying. I wiped all my tears away.    "We're in New York." Jack told me worriedly. I nodded and got off the plane quickly before anybody could question my tears.   Kirk already found us a house to live in.    "I CALL MASTER ROOM!" I yelled out loudly as I ran into the house.   "NOT FAIR! YOU GOT OUT OF THE PLANE FIRST!" Caleb yelled as he ran after me.   I literally ran around the whole house with the others hot on my tail, but I eventually sank to the ground in defeat.   "There's no master bedroom." I muttered.   "What did you say?" Ashley asked me.   "There is no master bedroom." I said a little louder.   "What?" Ashely asked again.   "THERE'S NO MASTER BEDROOM!" I yelled.   "There you guys are!" Jack said after he found all of us.   "Where've you been?" Julia asked.   "The question is where have you guys been? I have something important to tell you." Jack said.   "What is it?" I asked.   "Kirk made sure that all the bedrooms were the same size so that we wouldn't fight over the master bedroom. Kirk chose the rooms though since we would have disguises and he put the clothes in there already." Jack explained.   Couldn't he have told us that earlier!?   ***   The school we were going to started at eight am so we decided to leave the house at seven. I woke up at around five to start on my disguise.   The first step was to dye my hair. Originally my hair is a light brown color, but I dyed it to a bright blonde. The dying process took about an hour and a half, so after I did that, I quickly applied some makeup on.    The disguise theme Kirk tried to get us to dress by was badass. I was about to question him about it, but then decided not to. I didn't want him to blow up in my face since I know how he's like when you question him. I don't want to go down that road again.    I applied concealer, mascara, and some dark red lipstick. After the makeup was done, I started getting dressed.    I opened my closet and was surprised to see my clothes for disguise. In the document Kirk gave me, we were all supposed to dress badass or something like that, but I didn't think he would go this far. Some of the clothes were so slutty.   I decided to wear an outfit that was already paired together. The outfit consisted of a black leather skater skirt, a white crop top, and a leather jacket. I wore heeled combat boots with that. Luckily, the make up I had on already matched my outfit. I let my curly, now light brown hair, down and walked downstairs.    I looked at the others who were already downstairs. I looked at their disguises and smirked. They all looked different.   Caleb and Jack both wore jeans, but Caleb had a black shirt while Jack had a white one. Ashley had on black ripped jeans and a black and white crop top with black leather boots. Julia had camo printed jeans and a white sleeveless top. She had brown combat boots on.   Not only were there outfits different from what they usually wear, but two of them also dyed their hair. Caleb's hair was now a dark brown while Ashley's hair is jet black and not brown anymore.    "You guys look different." I said once I walked up to them.   "So do you." They said.   "Ready for school?" Jack asked me. I nodded.   "Yep. Let's get this mission done with." I said as I grabbed an apple.   ***   It was around seven ten when we arrived at the school. Once we stepped onto the school campus, already half of the students that were outside stared at us. After we stepped into the building, even more heads were facing our direction, but we simply ignored it.   "Where's the school office?" Caleb asked us.   "How should I know? This is the first time I've been to this school." I stated annoyed.   "Where's the school office?" Ashely asked one of the students nearby us.   "O-over there." The student stuttered quickly while pointing towards the end of a hallway. Ashley nodded and we began to walk towards the direction she pointed.   Once we found the office, we got our schedule. Luckily, we have almost the same classes together. I don't have any of them in my first class though today.    We split up and began walking to our first class.    Right when I entered my first class english, everybody turned to look at me. I didn't bother smiling since I wasn't always the most friendliest person ever.   "Come over here, Skylar." A woman in her mid forties called out to me. I walked over to her and she made me face the class.   "This is Skylar Jones. She will be joining us this year, so be nice and welcome her to the school." The teacher said.   "Go sit over there, Skylar." The teacher said as she pointed to the only empty seat near the back.   I walked over there and sat down casually as I put my bag on the side of the desk. I saw all the girls gape at me with jealousy in their eyes. I looked at the guy I sat next to and immediately knew why. He was actually pretty hot. Who am I kidding? He was a sexy beast. At least that's what I would've thought last year.   He was just a normal guy with a normal life. All guys are like that. He wasn't different from any guy on this planet. All the girls in the class seemed to like him or something since they kept on looking at him with lust. I mentally gagged at having to see a girl glance my way every minute. It's actually revolting.   Now, you might be wondering why I don't like any guys at all. Here's the answer. It's because I've had my heart broken before.   I dated a guy for two years while I was in the FBI. He wasn't in it though. He was just a normal guy. After our two year anniversary, I decided to tell him that I was in the FBI. I hated keeping it from him and he was beginning to be really suspicious as to why I've always been so distant. Well, after I told him, he became furious at me.   He screamed at me and tried to physically abuse me, but I didn't let that happen. I fought back until he left me alone. That was how we broke up. Even though I guess it was partially my fault, I was heartbroken to know that something like that would make him hate me so much.   ***   After the class was over, I started putting my books I just got into my backpack. Before I could walk away from my desk, a hand pulled me back.   "Skylar, right?" I heard a male voice ask me. I turned around and saw the boy I sat next to.   "Yes. Who are you?" I asked.   "The name's Chris Evans. See you around." He said as he began to walk away.    That was strange.    I began to walk out of the door when another hand pulled me back. This time it wasn't a guy's hand.   "Listen you slut. You better stay away from my Chris or else I will make your life here a living hell." A girl snapped at me.   "Who are you?" I asked in disgust as I yanked my wrist out of her grip. She scoffed.   "I am the most popular girl here, Lexi Dillon." She announced.   "Well, sorry to burst your little egotistical bubble, but you can't tell me what to do. Also, I just met Chris." I said annoyed.   "You're such a b***h!" She said as she tried to punch me.   I stepped to the side a bit so that her punch went right by my face. I held her wrist tightly in one hand and pulled her sideways so that her body banged against the lockers.   "Don't mess with me." I hissed quietly.   I turned around to see my friends looking at me with a neutral face since they've seen me do this before, but I also saw Chris with a shocked expression.    I quickly walked to my friends and dragged them away from Chris. Nobody can figure out that we're agents. I guess Kirk was right. This is a lot harder than I thought since there are so many distractions.
