Chapter 3

Skylar's P.O.V: "Skylar! You could've blown our cover!" Caleb lectured me. "I know and I'm sorry! That girl was just getting on my nerves and I had to do something about it." I explained. "You need to control your temper. It's going to get us all into big trouble and that could cost one of our lives. You should know better than this. Kirk put you in charge, so start acting like a leader for once!" Caleb said, continuing his lecture. "I know, I know, I know! You don't have to keep reminding me!" I yelled at him. Caleb looked at me with a shocked face. I guiltily looked away. "Sorry." I mumbled. "It's fine." He answered. I could still feel the uneasiness in the air still. My other friends were probably looking at each other and silently asking each other what to do.  "So, did anybody have any luck in finding any suspicious people in the school?" I heard Ashley ask. "No." We all chorused together. "Skylar, did Kirk give you any advice for this mission?" Ashley asked. "Yeah, but they're really vague." I answered in a really dull voice. "Well, can you tell us?" Ashley urged me to tell them all the advice. "He said to not die." I answered. "Now's not the time to be joking." Caleb warned me. "I'm not joking." I said annoyed. "Just drop the act, Skylar. Do you really want us to all die?" He asked me, getting annoyed as well. "I'm not lying and what happened to him was an accident!" I yelled at Caleb and ran away from all my friends. When I said 'him', I was talking about my brother and Caleb knew that as well. I didn't mean to kill him anyways. "You okay?" I heard a male voice ask me. I looked up and saw Jack looking down at me with a concerned expression.  "I'm just stressed." I answered with my head still in my hands. Jack sat on the bench I was sitting on and placed his arms around me. "I'm here for you." He said as he hugged me.  I hugged him back and buried my head in the crook of his neck. Jack has always been like another brother to me. He's always been there for me and he's never let me down or made me feel bad about myself. He's always there to help me. By the time lunch came around, I walked in the same direction everybody else was walking in since I assumed they would be walking towards the cafeteria. I was right because I ended up finding myself in a big white room with dozens of tables.  Students were waiting in line and some were sitting down at the tables. I went to see what the cafeteria was serving and it looked pretty gross, so I didn't bother buying anything. Soon, I heard a familiar voice coming from outside. "You're so young and stupid. How are you a senior? Shouldn't you be a freshman or a sophomore?" I saw Julia being backed up against a wall with two girls all in her face. Julia was actually a sophomore, but she's pretending to be a senior for this mission so that it's easier for all of us to contact each other. Why's Julia not defending herself? I guess she doesn't have to fight back like I did, but she should at least verbally defend herself. She shouldn't be acting so weak. "You're just a little girl. You don't understand anything yet." The other girl, who I recognized as Lexi, taunted Julia. Lexi must sure love to annoy people. "I bet you're still a virgin!" The girl said out loud and cackled. Yes, she cackled. Not laughed. Cackled. There were two things wrong with what the girl just said. First, it's not required to not be a virgin when you're a senior. I'm a senior and I'm still a virgin. You're supposed to give yourself to somebody who you truly love, not to somebody who uses you and then dumps you away like garbage.  The second thing wrong with that sentence is that Julia was not a virgin. Even though Julia is only a sophomore, she's not a virgin anymore. Because Julia is on my team, I had to find information about her past. After finding information about it in files, I found out that she's been sexually abused at a young age. It's a really sensitive topic for Julia.  "Shut up." Julia said to the girl who just claimed Julia to be a virgin. "I'm sorry, did you just tell me to shut up?" The girl hissed. Julia didn't bother answering because she swung her fist back and hit the girl's eye. The girl she just hit fell down and I saw the skin around her left eye swell up and become an ugly shade of purple. Lexi, who was standing next to the girl who just got punched, seemed to be unfazed by this situation. Instead of screaming and running away in fear like I expected her to, she brought back her foot and attempted to send a kick at Julia. I guess teenage girls in high school fight a lot, so it's pretty normal. Julia's eyes widened, but she stepped away just in time. Julia brought her fist back to send another punch at Lexi, but she didn't get to because Lexi got a grip of her wrists and pinned her to the wall. The girl who just got punched got up. "You're going to pay." She hissed as she brought her fist back.  Just before her fist collided with Julia's face, I stepped in and stopped her punch. The girl looked at me frightened. She must've heard about what I did to Lexi this morning.  The two girls quickly walked away and I swear that I heard Lexi mutter curse words under her breath.  "Why didn't you defend yourself? It's okay to be rude back to her since we're pretty much disguised as badass teenagers." I said Julia who looked pretty shaken up.  "I don't know." She said quietly. I looked at her suspiciously, but quickly shrugged it off. "Let's go find the others." I said as I held her wrist. As I began to walk forward with her wrist in my hand, she quickly yanked her wrist out of my hand and caressed it with her other hand. "What's wrong?" I asked. "It just hurts from training back at the FBI base." She answered quickly. I nodded. *** After school finished, I put my book into my locker. I was about to text one of my team members to ask them if they wanted to walk back to the house together, but I was interrupted by somebody shutting my locker. "Skylar, right?" Chris asked me with a smirk as he leaned against my shut locker. "What do you want?" I asked annoyed. School has been a pain in the ass the whole day and I just want to go home. "Just wanted to talk. Is that illegal or something?" He asked with an amused grin. "With you? It should be illegal." I said as I slung my backpack over my shoulder. "You're one feisty little ball of sunshine." He said cheekily. "Sunshine? Where did that come from?" I asked him. "How can you not know? I can see you from miles away!" I gaped at him. "Are you calling me fat?" I asked him.  "No! I just meant that your hair is a really bright color, so it's easy to see you." He said, trying to cover up his mistake quickly. I chuckled lightly. "You don't have to be nervous. I was just joking with you." I said lazily. "Okay. Let's go." He said and grabbed my hand. "Wait. Where are we going?" I asked him. "Somewhere." He said.  "I swear, if you kidnap me, this will be the last day you will live on this earth!" I screamed in his ear. "Your voice is as strong as the sun's rays. I'm pretty sure I picked the right nickname for you. Right, sunshine?" He said teasingly. I groaned. "Where are we going?" I asked him. "For the millionth time, I am not telling you." He said while continuing to walk with me, hand in hand. "Why are you holding my hand?" I asked him, changing the question. He stopped walking and looked at our hands which were still being held together. He quickly let go and continued walking. "I didn't want you to escape." He said.  "Yeah, whatever." I said rolling my eyes. "We're here." He said. "Are you kidding me?" I asked him. I looked at the forest in front of me. Why did he take me to a f*****g forest? "A forest?" I asked him, not believing the situation I was in. "Yep, and we're going to play a game!" He said happily. "What game?" I asked cautiously. "Two of my friends are somewhere in the forest." He said. "So what?" I asked. "I made them bring your lady friends here." He then said. "So what?" I asked him again. I didn't get what the point was. He then leaned over and poked my shoulder. "Tag, you're it." He said and ran away. I stared after him as he ran into the forest. Should I go after him? I should really be focusing on the mission though. Kirk said the mission will be longer than expected though so one day longer wouldn't matter, right?  Ugh, stop thinking that Skylar! You have to focus on the mission. You've never failed and this won't be your first fail. Your four hundredth mission can't be a fail! That's too much to give on. Letting loose one day is probably okay though. It's not like I'm going to die during or after I play this game of tag with Chris, his friends, and my friends. I guess it's time to let loose for a day. I chased after Chris into the forest, hoping to get this game over quickly. That boy will be the death of me.
