Chapter 5

2299 Words
Four years ago The night had a strange stillness to it, the kind that did not feel peaceful but watchful, as though something unseen lingered just beneath the surface, waiting for the right moment to reveal itself. Alex drove through the quiet stretch of road with one hand resting lazily on the steering wheel, his expression unreadable as the faint glow of streetlights passed intermittently across his face. The city had long since retreated into silence, leaving only the distant hum of engines and the occasional flicker of movement in the shadows. His mind, however, was anything but quiet. It rarely was. There was always something moving endlessly beneath that composed exterior. Even now, in the calm of the night, there was a restlessness he could not quite name. Suddenly, he saw a figure of a woman running. At first, Alex thought his eyes were playing tricks on him. The road ahead had been empty just seconds ago quiet, still, the kind of silence that usually wrapped around the night like a blanket. But now, cutting through that stillness, was movement.Fast and desperate. He narrowed his eyes slightly, his grip tightening on the steering wheel as the headlights of his car stretched forward, catching glimpses of her silhouette. She was running blindly, her steps unsteady, like someone who had already used up all her strength but had no choice but to keep going. There was something off about the way she ran. He slowed the car instinctively, his gaze fixed on her. The closer he got, the clearer it became—this wasn't just someone in a hurry. This was fear.Real fear. Her hair was disheveled, falling wildly around her shoulders, and even from a distance, he could see the way she kept glancing back, like something or someone was chasing her. Alex's jaw tightened. For a brief moment, he considered driving past. That was the logical thing to do.This wasn't his problem. It wasn't his business. Nights like this in a city like this always came with stories, and most of them were better left untouched. But there was something about her.........something that pulled at him in ways he couldn't explain. Maybe it was the fear in her eyes, or the way she ran like the world was closing in on her. Maybe it was the desperation that clung to her like a second skin. Or maybe... it was the feeling that if he left her there, something irreversible would happen. But wait a second... why do I even care? His grip tightened on the steering wheel as the thought struck him. He had never been one to care. Not about strangers. Not about anyone in danger. That wasn't who he was. So what exactly was going on tonight? Why was he slowing down instead of driving past? Why was his attention fixed on a girl he didn't even know? His jaw clenched, a flicker of irritation passing through him. His thoughts shattered the moment she stumbled. One second she was running, and the next she fell.Hard. For a brief second, everything seemed to slow down. The sound of her hitting the ground echoed louder than it should have, her fragile frame crumpling against the rough pavement as if she had nothing left in her.Something twisted inside him. Before he could stop himself, before logic could catch up with instinct, his foot slammed on the brakes. The moment Catherine hit the ground, she knew it was over. A sharp breath left her lips as pain shot through her body, but it wasn't the pain that terrified her—it was what came next. They would catch her. Before she could even push herself up, shadows closed in around her. She froze with fear. Slowly, she lifted her gaze... and her heart dropped. Three men surrounded her. They didn't just look dangerous—they were dangerous. It showed in the way they stood, in the cold predatory glint in their eyes. Their presence was suffocating, their eyes dark with intent. The stench of alcohol clung to them, mixed with the harsh, bitter smell of cigarettes. Catherine's fingers curled weakly against the ground, her breath trembling. There was nowhere left to run. "Finally got you princess" "You really thought you could outrun us?"one of them said, shaking his head as he stepped closer. "Running just made it more fun," another added, his voice laced with amusement. Catherine's breath hitched as they closed in around her. Their eyes roamed over her, filled with lust that made her stomach twist. "She's gorgeous..." one of them muttered, licking his lips as he took a slow step closer. A low laugh followed. Another stepped forward, crouching slightly as if to get a better look at her. "And all alone too... how lucky are we?" Catherine's breath hitched as she tried to push herself back, but there was nowhere to go Before she could move, another one reached down and gripped her shoulder tightly. Catherine let out a sharp scream, her body flinching under his touch as fear shot through her. "Easy now," the man said, his voice low and mocking. "No need to struggle." They moved closer, closing the little space she had left, their presence suffocating. Catherine's heart pounded violently against her chest. No this couldn't be happening. CRACK!! A punch landed out of nowhere. One of the men's heads snapped violently to the side as his body hit the ground before anyone could even process what had just happened. Then silence followed. "Wha—" "Who the hell—" The remaining men turned sharply— And then they saw him.Standing dangerously still behind them. His presence alone was enough to shift the air, heavy and suffocating. The streetlight caught the sharp edges of his face, the expensive cut of his suit, the quiet power in the way he stood. Wealthy. Dangerous. And not the kind of man you crossed twice. His gaze moved lazily from the man on the ground... to the others still standing. Catherine's breath hitched. She hadn't even seen where he came from. One second she was surrounded... the next He was there. Her heart pounded violently against her chest as her eyes locked onto him, shock flooding through her. But beneath that shock... something else crept in. Relief. So sudden it almost made her weak. "Who are you?" one of the men demanded, trying to mask the unease creeping into his voice. Alex didn't answer. Instead, he tilted his head slightly, his expression calm. "You picked the wrong person tonight."His voice was low, laced with danger. One of the men scoffed nervously. "Do you even know who you're messing with?" Alex's lips curved slightly into a faint, dark smile, one that held no warmth, only quiet danger. "I was about to ask you the same thing." Without warning, another man lunged forward at Alex But Alex moved faster. He ducked smoothly, the attack missing him by inches. In the same motion, he grabbed the man's arm, twisting it sharply until a pained grunt tore from his lips. Before the man could recover,a brutal punch slammed into his stomach. The force knocked the air out of him instantly, his body folding as he collapsed to the ground. Catherine flinched at the sound, her eyes widening as she watched him take them down like it was nothing... like this wasn't new to him.Like he had done this before. Within moments, the last man staggered back, fear now fully written across his face. "Let's go," he muttered, grabbing his injured partner. They both ran without looking back. And just like that... it was over. The silence that followed felt unreal. Catherine's breathing was uneven, her chest rising and falling as she stared at him.Still trying to understand what had just happened. Alex turned to her slowly.Their eyes met.For a brief second, everything else faded. The fear. The chaos. The night. And all she could see... was him. There was danger written all over him—in his eyes, in his presence, in the quiet power he carried. And yet... for some reasons she couldn't explain,She had never felt safer. Alex glanced down at her, his expression unreadable. "Can you stand?" Catherine hesitated for a second before nodding. "I... I think so."Her voice came out softer than she expected. He offered his hand. She stared at it briefly then placed hers in his. The moment their skin touched, a strange warmth spread through her, catching her off guard. He pulled her up effortlessly, his grip firm but careful. "Thank you..." she whispered, avoiding his eyes. "I—I don't know what would've happened if you hadn't —" "You're not safe here," he cut in, his tone calm but leaving no room for argument. She blinked, slightly taken aback. "I can manage—" "No, you can't."His sharp gaze met hers leaving her no space to protest. "I'll take you home." Catherine hesitated, her fingers tightening slightly around his sleeve. For a moment, she studied him—this stranger who had just saved her. Dangerous and mysterious. And yet... "Okay," she said quietly. Alex gave a short nod and turned toward his car, still holding her hand like letting go wasn't an option. And strangely enough.....she didn't want him to. The car door shut with a soft click. Then silence followed. Catherine sat stiffly in the passenger seat, her hands resting on her lap as she tried to steady her breathing. The warmth inside the car felt unfamiliar after the cold night, but it did little to calm the rapid beat of her heart. Beside her,Alex started the engine. The low hum filled the space between them. "Where do you live?" he asked, his eyes fixed on the road. Catherine hesitated before giving him the address, her voice barely above a whisper. He nodded once. Then silence fell again. She stole a glance at him. Up close... he was even more intimidating. Sharp features, calm expression, expensive suit—everything about him screamed power. The kind that didn't come from just money. "Thank you," she said softly, breaking the quiet. "For... helping me back there." Alex didn't respond immediately. Instead, his fingers tapped lightly against the steering wheel, his gaze unreadable. "You shouldn't be out alone at night," he said finally. There was no judgment in his tone just a quiet statement. Catherine looked down at her hands. "I didn't have a choice." Something in her voice made him glance at her briefly.Just for a second. But it was enough. Enough for him to notice the fear she was still trying to hide. Enough for something unfamiliar to stir in his chest. "Those men," he said, his voice lower now, "they weren't playing around" Catherine's breath hitched slightly. "I know." She couldn't help but imagine what would've happened to her if he hadn't showed up.Fear gripped her more. The car fell silent again. But this time, it felt heavier. As if both of them were holding onto things they weren't ready to say. After a moment, she spoke again, her voice quieter. "Why did you help me?" The question lingered in the air. Alex's grip on the wheel tightened just slightly. "I don't know." And for the first time that night— That answer was the truth. ——————————————————————— The car slowed to a stop in front of a modest house. For a moment, neither of them moved. The engine hummed softly, filling the silence that had settled between them. Catherine glanced outside, then back at her hands, her fingers fidgeting slightly. "We're here," Alex said. His voice was calm, but quieter now. Catherine nodded, though she didn't reach for the door immediately. "...Thank you," she said softly. "For everything." This time, he didn't look away. His gaze rested on her-steady and unreadable. "You should be more careful next time," he said.It wasn't a warning. It sounded more like concern. Catherine swallowed, then gave a small nod. "I will." Another silence. But this time heavier Like neither of them quite knew how to end this. Catherine finally reached for the door, pushing it open. The cool night air rushed in, brushing against her skin. She stepped out... then paused.Something made her turn back. Their eyes met again. For a brief second, the world felt strangely still. "Will I... see you again?" she asked, the words slipping out before she could stop them. Even she looked surprised by her own question. Alex didn't answer immediately. His gaze lingered on her, something unreadable flickering in his eyes. Then, slowly..... "No." The word was simple and....final. Yet something about the way he said it... didn't quite feel true. Catherine's chest tightened slightly, though she forced a small nod. "I see." She stepped back, closing the door gently. Alex watched as she walked toward the house, her figure slowly disappearing behind the gate. And for some reason— His eyes stayed there long after she was gone. The engine was still running. But he didn't drive off.Not yet. He just sat there, his gaze fixed on the gate long after it had closed behind her. Silence filled the car, but his mind wasn't quiet. It replayed everything. The way she ran,the fear in her eyes. The moment she fell and the way his heart skipped. His jaw tightened slightly. Then came another memory......their hands on her.The way they surrounded her.The way they almost...... His grip on the steering wheel tightened, his knuckles turning white as something sharp flared in his chest. He was........angry. Why? Why did it bother him this much? He had seen worse, done worse. So why was this different? Why was she different? With a quiet exhale, he tore his gaze away from the house and started the engine and drove off. But the image of her......Stayed.
