Chapter 1

"My mother was a thief... or at least, that's what they said before she died." The words echoed in my mind like a curse I couldn't escape. I stared at the cracked wall in front of me, my fingers clenched tightly around the thin fabric of my dress. Our house if it could even be called that felt emptier than ever.Quieter.Colder. Ever since she died, nothing felt the same.Silence filled the small house she left behind. Not a peaceful silence, but the kind that pressed heavily against your chest...making it hard to breathe. I sat on the edge of the old wooden bed, my fingers gripping the fabric of my dress as I stared at nothing in particular. Thoughts ran through my mind endlessly, each one heavier than the last. The faint scent of detergent still lingered in the air, mixed with something colder... something lonelier. It clung to the walls, to the furniture, to everything she had touched. The fabric beneath me was rough, old from years of use. This house had never been much...but it had been ours. Now, it just felt like a place waiting to be abandoned. "Claire..." I lifted my head slightly. My sister stood near the window, her arms folded tightly across her chest as she stared outside. Her eyes clouded with a grave intensity that spoke of thoughts she couldn't voice. Her brows furrowed, her lips pressed tight,as if the weight of the world had settled on her shoulders. Lisa She had always been the stronger one between us;tall, poised and breathtaking.Even with tension written across her face, her beauty remained striking, sharp, confident, and impossible to ignore, like a flame that refused to dim. But mine... Mine was different. Softer. Quieter. The kind people noticed without understanding why.I had heard it all before."She looks like morning light." "There's something about her..." "She's too beautiful to ignore." I never knew how to respond to things like that.Beauty didn't feel like a blessing. Not now.Not when it couldn't protect me from what was coming. "Do you think they'll come?" Lisa asked suddenly. Her voice was low... but tense.I didn't need to ask who she meant. The people our mother had spent years running from. The people she never talked about...but always feared. I swallowed slowly, my fingers tightening together. "They were always going to," I said quietly,my voice barely above a whisper,my expression solemn as the weight of the truth settled heavily within me.Lisa turned to look at me. For a moment... neither of us spoke.Because the truth was already sitting between us. Our mother had secrets.Big ones. She worked harder than anyone I knew—waking up before sunrise, coming home long after dark. Her hands were always tired. Her body always aching. But she never complained. Not once. And yet...There were nights she would sit in silence, staring at nothing.Nights she would lock the door twice.Nights she would look at us like she wanted to say something...but didn't.Now I understood why.She wasn't just tired. She was afraid. Bang bang The knock came suddenly, loud and jarring, making my heart jolt in my chest. It echoed through the house like a warning. Lisa froze instantly. My heart started pounding. Another knock followed.Harder this time.More impatient. "Open the door."The voice was deep.Cold. In an instant,Lisa was beside me,her hand clutching mine with a tight, almost desperate hold. "Stay close to me",she whispered, her voice steady—but her grip betrayed the tension she couldn't hide. Then she turned and walked to the door. For a second, she hesitated, her hand hovering over the handle. Then with a quiet breath, she opened the door. Three massive men stood outside, their expressions dark and threatening, their presence alone enough to make my tummy twist. They didn't look like men who asked questions. They looked like men who gave orders. "You're coming with us," one of them said Lisa straightened slightly, taking a steady breath as she tried to compose herself, though the tension still lingered in her eyes. "Why?" she asked, her voice firm—but not steady. The man's eyes moved briefly past her...landing on me.I felt a chill run down my spine. "You will find out soon enough.",he replied. My stomach tightened instantly. So it had finally come. Whatever she had been hiding... Whatever she had been running from...It was no longer in the past.It was here.it was standing right in front of us. We didn't get the chance to argue.Within minutes, we were outside, being led toward a car that didn't belong in our world. Black.Sleek.Expensive. The kind of car people stopped to stare at.The kind we had only ever seen from far away. The car door swung open and we were pushed inside. The leather seats were impossibly soft, swallowing us whole, smooth like silk against my skin. A faint scent of luxury lingered in the air—expensive cologne and polished wood. Soft ambient lights glowed along the edges, casting a quiet golden hue. Everything about the car whispered wealth... yet the silence inside it was suffocating. No one spoke. The silence was unbearable.I stared out the window as the familiar streets disappeared behind us. Everything I knew...everything that felt normal...was slowly fading away. When the car finally stopped, I stepped out slowly.....and my breath caught. The mansion stood before us like something out of another world—vast, flawless and impossibly grand.Cream colored walls gleamed under soft golden lights, while tall glass windows shimmered like mirrors.A wide fountain sat proudly at the center of the driveway, its gentle flow tge only sound in the stillness.Lisa stepped close to me. "Who.......lives in a place like this?"she whispered, her voice filled with awe. We were already being led into the house, the men moving ahead of us without a word. The moment we crossed the threshold, I felt it instantly—this place... it was even more. The interior swallowed me whole. The floors gleamed beneath our feet, smooth marble stretching endlessly, reflecting the soft golden glow of massive crystal chandeliers hanging high above. The ceilings towered overhead, so high they made me feel small, almost insignificant. Every step echoed softly, swallowed by the vastness around us. Elegant staircases curved gracefully along the sides, their polished railings gleaming under the light. The walls were adorned with intricate designs and framed artwork that looked far too expensive to even touch. Fresh flowers sat in tall vases, their faint scent blending with the rich smell of polished wood and luxury. Everything was perfect. Too perfect. Not a single thing was out of place. Not a sound disturbed the air except the quiet rhythm of our footsteps. It felt less like a home... and more like a carefully controlled world. My chest tightened as I looked around, overwhelmed. This wasn't just a mansion. It was power. It was wealth. It was something far beyond anything I had ever known. And somehow... it didn't feel welcoming at all. We were led deeper into the mansion, our footsteps echoing faintly against the marble floors, until the men suddenly stopped. And then... I saw him. Seated at the far end of the room... like he owned not just the space, but the air within it. He sat in a grand chair, his posture relaxed yet commanding. One arm resting lazily, his head slightly lowered as his attention remained on his phone.Like our presence meant nothing in his world. The air in the room felt heavier the longer he stayed like that...silent...composed. Then.... He stopped. Slowly...deliberately...He lifted his head. And the moment his eyes found mine, Time.....stopped.
