Day 1Oscar Thomson, the Chief Operating Officer for Norfolk International Terminals, or NIT, looked out over the huge container port from the vantage point of the facility’s control tower. Below him, ship-to-shore cranes either removed or loaded cargo containers to and from the container ships docked along the port’s six berths. Straddle carriers and gantry cranes moved the off-loaded containers to either awaiting trucks or to specially equipped rail cars for transportation out from the terminal to customers all over the eastern half of the United States.
