Sophia Gass got off the train in Manhattan feeling lost and alone. A recent breakup had left her hurting, and the city seemed more like a confusion than a fresh start. Her friends and family were thousands of miles away, so she would have to find out for herself.

Will she even be able to do that? Also, how will she cope with love no matter the unending challenges confronting her?

Chapter one
Manhattan's tall buildings were huge. They swallowed me. I'd been in the city for two months. My excitement had turned to a constant dull state of that ache of being alone. “Hmm.” I thought deeply. My breakup still hurt, a fresh, open wound. Yellow cars, rushing strangers, skyscrapers, bright clouds. They all made me feel smaller, invisible. Friends and family were far away. Their voices were just echoes. I had to figure out this big, tough city alone. I felt so lonely. Days meant job interviews. I dressed in my best, practiced answers. Each one left me more beaten. Polite rejections, silent emails. They were tiny moths in my cloth. It was a loss of hope. Nights were the hardest, alone in my quiet apartment. The silence was heavy, almost choking, broken only by sirens or the city's deep rumble. Desperation, quiet and sneaky, rushed in. It pushed me to online dating. It promised friends, connection. But it often left me more alone, scrolling through faces without really seeing anyone. "Ah!" I exclaimed, waiting for the man I would love to meet online. One rainy afternoon, I dodged a sudden drizzle and my bad thoughts. I found myself in a small, bright art gallery in Chelsea. Warm air smelled of paint and coffee. A soft sound filled the room. I moved through the corridors, letting the colors wash over me. I stopped at a painting. It glowed with vibrant blues and greens, pulling me closer. It was beautiful. "That one always catches people's eyes," a cool voice said next to me. I turned, surprised, my heart jumping. A man stood there. Kind, warm brown eyes. Slightly messy black hair, like he'd run fingers through it a thousand times. He had a gentle, welcoming smile. A worn leather messenger bag hung from his shoulder. He looked thoughtful, real. "It's beautiful," I managed to say, feeling a blush. I wasn't used to easy talk with strangers, not anymore. My social skills turned rusty after so much time alone. "It's one of mine," he admitted, a slight blush on him too. Charming shyness in his eyes. "Alex Chen." He held out his hand. His handshake was firm, surprisingly comforting. A small jolt of good energy hit me. "Sophia Gass," I said, surprised by the warmth spreading through me. It was so different from my usual polite but distant talks. Alex talked easily about his art, what inspired him, a deep love for the city's forgotten spots, the hidden beauty in everyday things. "Being a freelance writer and artist, chasing creativity, paying bills with words." He explained, breathing with hard sighs. "It's a long term job and also, these artworks are professional. There are many things to say about them…" He didn't push me. He just shared. And when I, to my own surprise, started talking about "But, it's hard to find a job here." I complained, holding my jaws to show indifference. "Anyways, it might not suit me to work here." He listened carefully, his eyes on mine, genuine curiosity on his face. "I understand you…" Our talk was short, maybe twenty minutes. But his unexpected kindness felt like cool water on a hot day, a break from my constant worry. Before we left, he gave me a small business card. It contained nothing else but his info. "If you ever need something to step down with," he said, his smile gentle and clear, "my gallery is open, and the coffee shop next door has a lot of good coffee." I put the card in my purse. A small, new spark of hope flickered inside. Our paths split afterwards. But Alex's thoughtful way and real smile left a good feeling, a sharp contrast to my usual worry. He was just a random person I had met, but he felt different, somehow lighter. That night, back in my apartment, the familiar loneliness stayed. But the memory of Alex's kindness gave me a small, steady light. Still, I really wanted to find connection, the big love that would sweep away my problems and fill the emptiness. I opened my dating app again, set on finding what felt missing. I scrolled through many profiles, faces blurring. I felt a familiar tiredness. Then, a bright smile caught my eye. Liam Ryder. His profile was witty, confident, and completely charming. His pictures showed him in expensive suits, on yachts, in exotic places—a man of power and influence. He was very handsome, no doubt. Sharp green eyes held secrets. Strong, clearly attractive features showed huge confidence. He felt like a fresh breath, promising to lead me out of loneliness into a world I'd only dreamed of. A world where I wouldn't feel so small. I decided to go on a video call with him. And we talked a bit, until he said he was busy online. "Hello, are you still there, Liam?" "Sure." He replied, his voice louder than earlier. "But, I am just the busy type. I notice you're cute. See your face. Let's send texts now." His messages were even more captivating. They flowed easily, sparking laughter and a strong, instant link. He seemed to get me to know what I thought before I even typed it. He talked about big goals, grand plans for his business, wanting a deep, real connection, just like me. Every word he typed felt like it fit perfectly into the empty spots in my heart, filling them with excitement. Our online chemistry was sincere and real, making my heart race. It quickly led to our first date. I spent hours getting ready. I carefully chose a chic black dress that hugged my curves. I hoped it would make me feel classy and beautiful, strong for this new start. I carefully put on my makeup, making my blue eyes pop. My hands trembled slightly with excitement. Every detail felt key, every brush stroke a silent prayer for a fresh start, a true bond. I wanted to be perfect for him, for us. “I'm here.” He looked even more attractive in person. He wore a black, smooth suit that made him look taller and more powerful. His presence filled my apartment with a magnetic energy. “You're welcome.” I said, embracing him instantly. The air around me crackled. He radiated charm and confidence. His green eyes sparkled, drawing me in completely. He held a single, perfect red rose, its petals very soft. That simple, classic move made my heart beat. It felt like a movie scene, a perfect romantic aura. Our dinner at an upscale Manhattan restaurant was perfect. Candlelight flashed, casting soft shadows. We talked for hours. We found shared interests in art and travel, laughed easily at each other's stories, and felt a truly real connection. Liam made me feel like I was alone in that room and he kept staring at me. "Liam?" I suddenly called. "Don't be scared." He often told me, laughing along with me. "Also, I have more than you think…" He spoke of his huge business ventures, his dreams, his hopes. It wasn't a joke. Everything he said hit me deep, hitting the parts of me that wanted stable success too. I was really relieved, having a growing trust in that I'd finally found something truly special. Something that would erase the past pain and fill the emptiness I'd carried so long. This, I considered to be the beginning of everything. This was the love I'd been looking out for —the one that would make me whole.
