PROLOGUE
The air inside the Blackthorn Estate always carried the scent of expensive tobacco, cold marble, and the undeniable iron scent of power.
Looking at it from the outside, this mansion belonged to a fairy tale—a massive structure made of dark stone and glass perched on top of a hill in the wealthiest district of the city. But for me, Lavigne Summer Viozka Pendleton, this place was a cage with walls made of gold, yet as cold as prison bars.
Three weeks had passed since my father signed the agreement that completely dismantled our family. The Pendleton Corporation, the company built by my grandfather and nurtured by our entire clan for decades, collapsed in a single night.
A massive financial scandal, forged signatures, and manufactured lawsuits engineered by people who wanted to swallow us whole. When everything was gone—our homes, our cars, and our remaining dignity—only the debt remained. Millions of pesos in debt that my family could never hope to pay back in their entire lifetimes.
And that was where the sole solution walked in, offered by the only man capable of collapsing or reshaping destinies in this industry.
Angellio Clinton Lovioscko Blackthorn.
I was standing now in front of the giant mirror inside the bedroom assigned to me. My long white hair—a rare inheritance from my grandmother that I used to feel self-conscious about because it stood out too much—flowed over my shoulders like thin silk. My eyes, green like old emeralds, were blank and swollen from crying. Gone was the spirit of a young woman whose dream was to become a free architect or painter. What remained was merely a shadow. A wife in name only, a debt-payment in reality.
*Knock. Knock.*
The housekeeper knocked just once before the heavy wooden door slowly pushed open.
"Lady Lavigne," Manang Rosa's voice carried a hint of worry that she forced herself to hide. "The Young Master is calling for you downstairs. He is waiting for you before he leaves for his first meeting this morning."
I gripped the edge of the vanity table tightly. My knuckles turned white from the sheer pressure. "O-okay, Manang. I'll go down."
I let out a breath, forcing my rapid heartbeat to calm down. With each passing day in this mansion, I had learned one crucial lesson: every single violation of his commands carried a punishment. Not physical violence—because what he did was far worse. Angellio’s punishment was suffocating the air out of your surrounding space until you felt like you were slowly drowning in your own tears.
I stepped out of the bedroom and walked down the length of the hallway. The sound of my heels clicking against the polished marble floor echoed through the dead-silent mansion. The walls were decorated with expensive paintings, but to me, every single corner felt like a warning never to attempt to escape.
When I reached the end of the grand staircase, I immediately spotted him.
Angellio. He was standing near the large double doors of the front entrance, wearing a tailored black suit that perfectly fit his broad shoulders and muscular build. His jet-black hair was slightly messy, and his blue eyes—as dark and cold as the deep ocean—were locked straight onto me as I walked down the steps.
He held a cup of black coffee in one hand, while the other hand rested inside the pocket of his slacks. There was no smile on his lips. His face looked carved out of ice—purely sharp, purely authoritative, and leaving zero room for mercy.
"You're late by forty seconds, Lavigne," he immediately greeted the moment I reached the bottom step. His voice was low, a baritone slicing through the silence of the massive foyer.
I stopped a few inches away from him. "I was just looking at something in the room for a second..."
"I didn't ask for your excuse," he cut me off, his voice serious and laced with a threat. He slowly walked closer to me until I could feel the heat of his body and the familiar scent of expensive cologne mixed with coffee. "I said, follow my schedule.
Remember, every second you spend in this house was paid for by millions. I own every single minute of you."
It felt like my chest was stabbed by his words. No matter how many times I had heard those phrases since we got married, it still hurt. It hurt to think that to him, I was just an object—a car or a building he purchased for his collection.
"I know, Angellio," I answered softly, forcing myself not to let my voice tremble. "I never forget our debt to you."
He stared deeper into my eyes, his blue irises seemingly scanning every corner of my soul. Some unreadable emotion flashed past them too quickly for me to catch—a kind of darkness and hunger that I couldn't tell if it was anger or obsession. But in the end, the cold mask returned to his face.
He raised a hand and grabbed my chin with his fingers. Firmly, enough to prevent me from pulling away, but not quite enough to truly hurt me.
"Good then," he whispered close to my ear. "Because if you ever think about running away or disobeying my orders... I will make sure your remaining family vanishes from this world with nothing you can do about it."
Before I could reply, he let go of my chin as if he had grown tired of touching me, turned around, and walked straight out toward the waiting black car outside.
I was left alone in the vast, cold foyer of the mansion. I took a deep breath, holding back the tears welling up in my eyes. This was the beginning of our story—an arrangement forged by debt, hardened by fear, and bound to a heart as hard as stone.
Little did I know, as I watched Angellio's car drive away, that the darkness between us would gradually turn into a blazing fire that would burn us both down.
