CHAPTER 25 THAT EVENING WAS the first chance I got to talk to Jed properly, and under his crude exterior I found more of the sweetness he tried to keep hidden. Not only that, he seemed genuinely interested in what I did, and the questions he asked revealed an intelligence I hadn’t been expecting. “You’re smarter than you look,” I told him. “I’m not sure whether to be insulted or flattered by that comment.” Oops.
