this can't be
Joan sits in the ultra sound room she barely registered the cold gel on her stomach as she hears the tech gasp concerned she looks up as the tech twirls the screen away mumbling I'll have to get the doctor as she rushes from the room.
concern rushes over her what could cause this reaction? did they find something? cancer? fear floods her veins just four months prior Joan's husband died at the age of 28 now she was all that was left to raise there 6 month old and 11 year old daughter's she couldn't be sick life wouldn't be cruel enough to take both parents?...would it?
she had shown up for a routine appointment to have her IUD removed after weeks of stomache cramps and pain she made the decision to make an appointment seeing as there was no need for it any longer as she had no plans to ever love again she showed up on time and everything was going smoothly she was seen quickly the doctor was prompt and then...they couldnt find it after multiple attempts to use an elongated magnet they gave up opting to send her for an ultrasound to locate it and be removed in room but the technician was acting as tho she found something much worse than an IUD suddenly there's a whoosh of cold air as the technician comes back into the room followed by three doctors they all crowd around Joan applying fresh gel to her already sticky stomach they push her back practically hissing
"hello I'm doctor sommers I'm going to just take a look just like here relax and breathe "
Joan strains to look at the monitor but the technician and doctors are crowding the screen blocking the view
"do you see what I see ? " the technician asks doctor sommers
they all turn to look and dr.sommers who clears her throat with a somewhat panicked look on her haggled face she's not an unattractive woman with her silky brown her and slightly bushy eyebrows she's in her mid to late 50s and seems so small in her over sized scrubs she looks as tho she just grabbed a random pair several sizes to large in her rush to get in the room
Joan's fear starts to rise in the back of her throat again making her feel nauseated
"were you a patient here when you received your IUD?" Dr sommers asks
Joan's stomach turns "yes" she answers hardly able to hear anything above the sound of her own heart beat rushing in her ears
Dr sommers looks to the ground before back to Joan as she says " your pregnant"
Joan lies there in silence for so long everyone but doctor sommers has left the room the doctor shuffles from one foot to the other awkwardly waiting for a response as the shock starts to fade Joan thinks there must be a mistake I misheard finally finding her voice all she can get out is "what?"
dr.sommers let's out a breath before she begins
"this happens sometimes looking at your ultrasound it seems the IUD is embedded into the wall of your stomach but you are most definitely pregnant"
Joan interrupts "is this a cruel joke??!! my husband has been dead for five months!! I cannot be pregnant it's impossible!"
Dr.sommers brown eyes become softer as she looks at Joan
