CHAPTER 1: Rejected Under the Blood Moon
The Blood Moon hung high above the Silver Moon Pack, staining the night sky crimson.
Every wolf in the territory gathered in the ceremonial clearing, their voices buzzing with excitement. Tonight was the Moon Bonding Ceremony the night every wolf prayed to discover their fated mate.
Lyra Ashwood stood at the edge of the crowd, trying to ignore the whispers that followed her wherever she went.
"There she is."
"The useless omega."
"I heard she still hasn't shifted."
"No Alpha would ever want someone like her."
She lowered her gaze, pretending their words didn't sting.
After eighteen years of insults, pity, and rejection, she had learned to hide her pain behind silence.
"Lyra."
A gentle voice interrupted her thoughts.
She turned to find her best friend, Ivy, squeezing through the crowd.
"You don't have to listen to them," Ivy whispered, taking her hand. "Tonight could change everything."
Lyra forced a smile.
"Do you really believe that?"
"I do."
Lyra wished she could believe it too.
Deep inside, she prayed to the Moon Goddess.
Please... just let me belong somewhere.
The drums echoed across the clearing.
Silence fell instantly.
Alpha Magnus Blackthorn stepped onto the stone platform beside his son.
Kael Blackthorn.
The future Alpha.
Tall. Broad-shouldered. Handsome enough to make every unmated female in the pack stare shamelessly.
The moment Lyra's eyes landed on him...
Something exploded inside her chest.
A warm pull.
A heartbeat that wasn't entirely hers.
Her wolf silent her entire life stirred for the first time.
Mate.
The word echoed through every part of her soul.
Her breath caught.
"No..."
Tears filled her eyes.
The Moon Goddess had given her a mate.
Kael.
It was Kael.
For one impossible second, hope bloomed inside her heart.
Maybe...
Maybe everything would finally change.
Kael's eyes searched the crowd.
Then they landed on her.
His body froze.
Shock flashed across his face.
Everyone noticed.
The pack began murmuring.
"Who's his mate?"
"Who did he find?"
Kael slowly walked toward her.
Each step made Lyra's heart beat faster.
He stopped only inches away.
She looked up at him with trembling eyes.
"Kael..."
The mate bond pulsed between them.
She expected warmth.
Acceptance.
A smile.
Instead...
His face twisted with disgust.
"No."
His voice was cold.
Impossible.
"It can't be."
The clearing became deathly silent.
"I refuse."
Lyra's smile disappeared.
"Kael...?"
He stepped back as if merely standing close to her disgusted him.
"I, Kael Blackthorn..."
His voice thundered across the clearing.
"...reject Lyra Ashwood as my mate."
The world stopped.
The bond inside her shattered.
Pain unlike anything she'd ever imagined ripped through her chest.
She collapsed to her knees.
A scream tore from her lips.
Gasps spread through the crowd.
Then...
Laughter.
Cruel.
Merciless.
"I knew an Alpha could never accept an omega."
"She's pathetic."
"Even the Moon Goddess made a mistake."
Tears streamed down Lyra's face as she struggled to breathe.
Every heartbeat felt like someone was driving a blade through her soul.
Kael didn't even look at her.
He turned his back.
"I will never accept a weak omega like Luna."
His words echoed through the clearing.
Alpha Magnus nodded proudly.
"You've made the right decision, my son."
The crowd applauded.
Applauded.
For destroying her.
Lyra stared at the ground, unable to move.
Was this really the Moon Goddess's blessing?
Or her punishment?
Suddenly..
A sharp pain exploded beneath the skin of her wrist.
She gasped.
A silver symbol began glowing on her arm.
One she'd never seen before.
It looked like a crescent moon wrapped around a crown.
The glow vanished before anyone noticed.
"What was that...?"
Before she could think
"Elder!"
An old wolf rushed toward the platform.
"The Shadow Rogues have crossed the northern border!"
The celebration erupted into chaos.
Warriors transformed instantly.
People screamed.
Children ran.
Kael barked orders.
"Protect the pack!"
No one noticed Lyra anymore.
She slowly stood.
Broken.
Forgotten.
Rejected.
Without another word...
She walked away from the only home she'd ever known.
She didn't see the old blind priestess watching from the forest.
The ancient woman smiled sadly.
"So...
"The seal has finally broken.
"The Moon Empress has awakened."
Far above the Blood Moon.
Something ancient opened its eyes.
And the world would never be the same
