The betrayal
[ Lizzy pov ]
What is love if not a deep and unconditional emotion towards another? What is love if not an undying desire for each other? What is love if not the acceptance of the other’s true self despite its flaws? Isn’t love supposed to help you grow? If all this is not love, then what is it? What have I been feeling for the last couple of months? Was I being played all this time? Was nothing real between us? How could I have been so blind? Did I mean nothing to him?
My mind kept on spiraling out of control as I sat on the damp floor of my cell. How could Jacob do this to me? How could he blame me for playing him when I was the one to give myself to him completely… Snow was so hurt that she dug herself into the deepest part of my mind and refused to come out. All I could hear now and then was her whimpers echoing in the well of my own turmoil and pain.
When I was momentarily being spared from my grief and heartache, another troubling thought arose. Am I really a vampire? There was no mistaking what I saw. My eyes were bright red. The colour of passion and desire, but also the colour of anger and destruction. Am I truly a damned soul? It all makes sense now that I think about it. I should have died from the silver knife, but I didn’t. If I was indeed an immortal, a silver knife would not defeat me, but there is more than meets the eye. Apollo, the protector of vampires, visited me in my oblivion. Initially, I thought that he did so because of Selene, but now, it is clear. The God of the Sun did so because I was one of his own too. And the witch… Let’s not forget the witch. She recognized me! Every piece of the puzzle has finally fallen into place.
The thought of my parents raged through my mind. Can it be that my mother is no other than Queen Victoria? Was Jacob telling me the truth? Was my own flesh and blood that ruthless killer? Absolutely no, I couldn’t be related to that monster. She killed Jacob’s grandfather and so many others. I refused to believe it, I thought as a whole day passed me by. The change of guards indicated to me that the morning had come and now, it has been almost a whole day that I have been kept in here against my will. Is my mate really not coming to see me? Is no one coming to my rescue? What about Blake? Has everyone forsaken me already?
[ Jacob’s pov ]
I have been pacing up and down my quarters the whole night. I just can’t seem to believe what had just happened. Was I in love with a bloodsucker? That can’t be. She must have used a spell, but what kind of magic would be strong enough to fool a king? Disgust and abhorrence at even thinking of marrying that abomination filled me. How could I have been so blind? Thankfully, Selene sheltered me from going through with this unforgivable mistake. What would my people do if they ever found out that I was about to announce a vampire as their Luna? For sure, they would have had my head and my throne.
«- Who cares about the damn throne?! May it burn to the ground! How could you throw our mate into the dungeons for this? That is why we never told you the truth! She knew you wouldn’t understand and I should have listened instead of defending your dumb ass!»
«- What are you saying, Black? Did you know that this vampire was fooling us all along? Don’t tell me you fell for her dirty tricks» I exclaimed, unable to believe my naïve wolf.
«- Yes, Snow told me she was a hybrid, but seeing your loathing towards the vampires, she begged me not to tell you. That is why she never shifted in front of you or went on runs with you. If she did, you would have seen the truth yourself and abandon her as you did now. She is our mate, no matter what she is, she is ours! » Black defended the monster. What kind of ancient magic did she use to deceive him?
«- So, Elisabeth or whatever her name is, was lying to me. She knew from the start that she was a bloodsucker».
«- No, she didn’t. Snow never told her. Whatever she said to you was true. Our mate never knew her parents or at least she has no memory of them. You accused her of this for no reason at all. The betrayal she must be feeling now…».
«- Are you even listening to yourself? That bloodsucker has obviously charmed you with one of her spells. Open your eyes. Why are you defending a ruthless, murderous creature like her? Can’t you realize that she was sent here to uncover our secrets and reveal them to her mother? She is the reason we got beaten so easily!».
«- Are you so blinded by hate that you will doom our own mate for the crimes she did not commit?» Black asked me, astonished by my words.
«- I am protecting everyone in this kingdom. You will thank me once the hold that vampire has over you is broken. Everyone will», I replied, certain about the matter. I must push through the doubts. They are just creations of that spell that tries to undermine me.
«- Speaking of everyone.. How will you explain the disappearance of Lizzy’s body to Blake and Adam? They definitely won’t believe that you just got over her in one day».
Speaking of the devil…
“ Aaa…aalphaa..aa, Luuu..na is askiiing for.. you, sir”, one of the guards that came to like the vampire imposter during her stay here, said with a trembling voice.
“- DON’T CALL HER THAT! She is nothing and there is no way in hell I am going to see her! I ordered you not to speak to her!” I shouted at him. I made myself explicitly clear when I said that no one should even look at her, let alone talk to her. How dare he go against my orders? Has she charmed everyone in this kingdom already? Thankfully, I found out about her deceptions before she could enchant every single soul here and turn my own people against me.
“- I am sorry, Alpha” the guard immediately replied, obviously regretting his decision of coming here.
“- Good. Now get the hell out of here while you still have all your limbs and never disobey me again!” I growled, scaring him off.
“- WHAT IS GOING ON HERE?!” I heard the very familiar voice I had been avoiding. Great. Just what I needed..
