The Rejection She Never Saw Coming
The Moon Shadow Pack had never looked more beautiful. Silver lanterns hung from towering pine trees, their soft glow dancing beneath the full moon. Music echoed through the clearing while wolves in human form laughed, talked, and celebrated the most anticipated night of the year. The Mate Ceremony. For every wolf turning eighteen, tonight would reveal the one soul chosen by the Moon Goddess. Lyra Ashwood stood quietly near the edge of the gathering, smoothing the wrinkles from her pale blue dress. It wasn't new. Her adoptive aunt had altered an old gown that had belonged to her cousin. Though worn, Lyra had spent hours washing and sewing it until it looked almost new. She smiled to herself. Maybe appearances didn't matter tonight. Maybe fate only cared about hearts. "You've been staring at the entrance for the last ten minutes." Lyra turned to see her best friend, Iris, approaching with two cups of berry juice. "I haven't." "You have." "I haven't." "You absolutely have." The two girls laughed. Iris nudged her shoulder. "You're waiting for Kael." A blush warmed Lyra's cheeks. "I just... haven't seen him yet." "Oh, please." Iris rolled her eyes dramatically. "Half the unmated girls are here hoping Alpha Kael looks in their direction, but everyone knows you've loved him since you were children." Lyra lowered her eyes. That part was true. Kael Blackwood. The future Alpha of Moon Shadow Pack. Strong. Handsome. Confident. He had always been the center of attention. As children, he had once rescued her from drowning in the river after she slipped from a rock. She had never forgotten the way he'd smiled afterward. "You're safe now." Those four words had stayed with her for years. She knew Kael had grown distant recently. Training. Leadership. Responsibilities. Still... Something inside her believed they belonged together. Not because she wished it. Because every time she stood near him, her heart felt strangely calm. Perhaps... He really was her mate. "You've dreamed about this night your entire life," Iris whispered. "I know." "So stop looking terrified." Lyra laughed nervously. "I can't help it." Before Iris could answer, the music suddenly stopped. A respectful silence spread across the clearing. Everyone turned. Kael had arrived. He walked between the gathered wolves with effortless confidence. Tall. Broad shouldered. Dressed in a fitted black ceremonial jacket embroidered with silver thread. Behind him came the pack elders and his father, Alpha Magnus Blackwood. The crowd bowed respectfully. Lyra felt her heartbeat quicken. He looked even more handsome than she remembered. For a brief second... Their eyes met. Her heart skipped. But Kael looked away almost immediately. The smile on her face faded. "Don't overthink it," Iris whispered. "He probably didn't even notice." Maybe. Lyra tried convincing herself of that. High Elder Rowan stepped onto the stone platform in the center of the clearing. "The Moon Goddess has blessed our pack with another year of peace." His deep voice carried across the silent crowd. "Tonight, new bonds will be formed." "New destinies will begin." "May every heart accept the path chosen by the Moon Goddess." The ceremony began. One by one... Young wolves stepped forward. Some gasped with joy. Others cried. Several couples embraced as they discovered their mates. Cheers filled the clearing. Parents celebrated. Friends clapped. Hope seemed to float beneath the moonlight. Lyra watched every pair with growing excitement. Soon... It would be her turn. She closed her eyes. Please... If Kael is truly my mate... Give me the courage to stand beside him. "Lyra Ashwood." Her name echoed through the clearing. Her stomach tightened. She walked toward the platform, every step feeling heavier than the last. The elders smiled politely. High Elder Rowan nodded. "Step forward." She obeyed. Then came another voice. "Kael Blackwood." A wave of excitement swept through the crowd. Future Alpha and ordinary orphan. What an unexpected pairing. Kael walked toward the platform without expression. He stopped only a few feet away. For one heartbeat... Everything became silent. Lyra felt something warm bloom deep inside her chest. A gentle pull. Like invisible threads connecting two souls. She inhaled sharply. Her wolf. The wolf she had never been able to hear. For the first time in eighteen years... She felt something. A whisper. Mate... Tears filled her eyes. He really was her mate. The Moon Goddess had heard her. She smiled through trembling lips. "Kael..." His face remained cold. Too cold. Something wasn't right. Before anyone could speak... A beautiful young woman stepped forward from the crowd. Selene Raven. Daughter of the Crimson Fang Alpha. Elegant. Proud. Perfect. She wrapped her arm around Kael's. The crowd exchanged confused glances. Lyra blinked. Why... Why was Selene standing beside him? Kael slowly looked at Lyra. No warmth. No happiness. No surprise. Only indifference. "I reject you." The words struck harder than any blade. The clearing fell into stunned silence. Lyra stared at him. She couldn't breathe. "What..." Her voice barely escaped. Kael spoke louder this time so every wolf could hear. "I, Kael Blackwood, future Alpha of Moon Shadow Pack, reject Lyra Ashwood as my fated mate." Gasps erupted across the gathering. Someone dropped a glass. An elder stood abruptly. Lyra's legs trembled. "No..." She whispered. "No..." High Elder Rowan frowned. "Kael, think carefully." "I already have." Kael never looked away from Lyra. "My Luna must be strong." "My Luna must inspire confidence." "My Luna cannot be a wolfless orphan who has never shifted." Each sentence landed like another blow. "You have no wolf." "You possess no Alpha blood." "You would weaken this pack." "I refuse to spend my life tied to someone so... ordinary." The last word shattered what remained of her heart. Around them... Whispers spread rapidly. "I knew she'd never become Luna." "Poor girl." "She's always been different." "She doesn't even have a wolf." "I heard she's cursed." Lyra felt every stare. Every whisper. Every ounce of pity. She looked desperately toward Kael, hoping this was some terrible joke. Instead... He gently took Selene's hand. "I choose someone worthy." Selene smiled triumphantly. "I'm sorry, Lyra." The words carried no sympathy. Only victory. Tears streamed down Lyra's cheeks. Her chest burned. It felt as though invisible claws were tearing her apart from the inside. The mate bond. Breaking. She cried out in pain as she collapsed onto her knees. The crowd watched in horrified silence. No one moved. No one helped. Even Iris stood frozen, tears filling her own eyes. Lyra pressed a trembling hand against her chest. It hurt. So much. She had imagined tonight a thousand different ways. Never like this. Never before the entire pack. Never with the man she had loved since childhood looking at her as though she meant nothing. She slowly lifted her tear-filled eyes. "Was... was I ever important to you?" For the first time... Kael hesitated. Only for a second. Then his expression hardened again. "No." One word. That was all it took. Something deep inside Lyra cracked. Not her heart. Something older. Something hidden. Far beneath the pain... A strange silver light flickered inside her chest. So faint that no one noticed. Except one person. High Elder Rowan. His eyes widened in horror. "No..." He whispered under his breath. "It can't be." Beneath the earth, ancient runes buried for centuries trembled. Deep inside the forbidden Silver Forest, miles away from the celebration, a pair of glowing golden eyes slowly opened. A voice, ancient as the moon itself, echoed through the darkness. "She has awakened."
