Episode 1 The contract
### *EPISODE 1: THE CONTRACT* The 47th floor of Blackwood Tower didn’t have ghosts. It had worse. It had Kael Blackwood. 11:47pm. Rain slammed against the floor-to-ceiling windows. The city below looked like broken glass and neon. I wasn’t supposed to be here this late. But the hospital called at 4pm. _"Mrs. Moon’s surgery is scheduled for Friday. Payment due in 72 hours. $87,000. Or we cancel."_ So I stayed. I worked. I bled into this campaign proposal until my fingers cramped. My heels echoed on marble as I pushed open the boardroom doors. The air inside smelled like leather, whiskey, and him. Kael Blackwood. CEO of Blackwood Corp. Net worth: 4.2 billion. Alpha King of the North Pack. And the mate I rejected in front of 200 wolves when I was 18. He was standing by the bar cart. No jacket. White shirt sleeves rolled to his elbows. A glass of amber liquid in his hand. He didn’t look at me. "Arielle Moon." His voice dragged over my name like he hadn’t said it in years. "You’re late." "I was finalizing the Q4 proposal," I said. My voice was steady. Professional. Nothing like the 18-year-old girl who cried in his arms. "You wanted it by midnight." "I wanted you by midnight." He turned then. And god. Five years. Five years and his eyes were still gold when he was angry. Still cut through me. He was 29 now. Harder. Sharper. The boy who used to laugh with his whole body was gone. This was a man who bought companies to destroy them. "Mr. Blackwood," I said, setting the folder on the table. "Here." He didn’t touch it. "Do you know why I hired you, Arielle?" "Because my resume was the best." "Bullshit." He set the whiskey down. The sound was too loud. "I hired you because I’ve spent 5 years trying to scrub your scent out of this building. Out of my car. Out of my sheets. And I couldn’t." The words hit like a slap. Wolves don’t lie about scent. It’s biology. "I rejected you," I whispered. "Legally. With witnesses. It’s done." "Is it?" He moved. Slow. Predator slow. 6'3 of tailored suit and controlled violence. He stopped two feet away. Close enough that I could smell pine, storm, and the faint trace of mate that I buried when I was 18. "I was 18 and terrified," I said. "I didn’t want to be owned. I didn’t want to be Luna. I wanted a name that was mine." "And now?" His jaw ticked. "Now you’re 23 and crawling back because your mother is dying and your insurance won’t cover experimental treatment." My chest caved. "How do you—" "I know everything about you." His gold eyes flicked down to my hands. They were shaking. "I know you work two jobs. I know you sold your car last month. I know the bill is $87,000 and due Friday." He walked to the table and slid a black folder toward me. *CONTRACT OF EMPLOYMENT & PROTECTION* *BLACKWOOD CORP. - PRIVATE & CONFIDENTIAL* *Term: 12 Months* *Position: Executive Assistant to the CEO - Personal Division* *Salary: $500,000 annually* *Benefits: Full Medical Coverage for 1 Dependent* *Clause 4: Employee will maintain absolute discretion* *Clause 9: Employee agrees to reside at the Alpha Estate for the duration of the contract. Security purposes.* *Clause 12: Breach of contract results in immediate termination and repayment of all funds.* I stared at it. "This is insane." "This is the only way I pay her hospital tonight," Kael said flatly. "And the only way I keep you breathing next week." My head snapped up. "What?" "Someone’s been following you." He said it like he was discussing quarterly earnings. "For 3 weeks. Human. Ex-military. Paid in cash." The room got cold. "Why?" "Because a rejected Luna is worth a lot on certain markets." His eyes went flat. "No pack. No protection. No claim. But with rare blood. They sell you, Arielle. Or they sell parts of you to alchemists." I felt sick. "That’s not—" "It is." He cut me off. "Three other rejected females have disappeared this year. All human. All desperate." My phone buzzed in my bag. I almost didn’t answer. Unknown number. _“Sign the contract, Luna. 12 hours. Or we visit your mother in room 418 first. - A Friend”_ The phone slipped from my fingers. Kael caught it mid-air. Read it. And the temperature in the room dropped 10 degrees. "Who has this number?" His voice was quiet. That was worse than yelling. "No one." My voice cracked. "Just my mom. And HR." Kael looked at me. Really looked. And for half a second, the CEO mask cracked. I saw Kael. 18. The one who taught me how to shoot. Who stayed up with me when my dad died. Who told me I could be anything. Then it was gone. "I’m not asking you to be my Luna," he said. He picked up a pen and held it out. "I’m asking you to survive. With me." "12 months," he continued. "You work for me. You live in my house. You follow my rules. At the end, you get the money. Your mom gets treated. And you walk away. Free. No bond. No claim." "Unless?" "Unless you choose to stay." He held my gaze. "The bond never broke, Arielle. We buried it. But it’s there. And if it wakes up, I won’t be gentle. And I won’t let you go twice." The rain hit the windows harder. My mother was in that hospital bed with tubes in her arms. Someone was watching me. And the only man with enough power to stop it was the one I broke. I hated him for this. I needed him for this. I took the pen. "I hate you," I whispered as I signed. Arielle Moon. "I know," Kael said. He took the contract. His thumb brushed over my signature. "Good. Hate is easier than hope." He set the pen down. "Driver picks you up at 6am. Pack one bag. You’ll be given everything else at the estate." "And if I don’t show?" Kael finally drank his whiskey. "Then I can’t promise what happens to room 418. Or to you." He turned back to the window. Dismissed. I was at the door when he spoke again. No looking back. "Welcome home, Luna." I didn’t answer. I couldn’t. Because my wolf, the one I’d locked away for 5 years, had just whispered in my head for the first time: _Mate._ --- ### *3:14 AM. MY APARTMENT.* I didn’t sleep. I packed. One duffel. Clothes. My mom’s photo. The rejection papers from 5 years ago. My phone buzzed again. Same number. _“Good girl. 6am. Don’t be late. - A Friend”_ I blocked it. It didn’t help. At 5:30am there was a knock. Black SUV. Tinted windows. Driver in a suit who didn’t speak. The Blackwood Estate was 40 minutes outside the city. Gates. Guards. Wolves. And in the center, a house made of stone and glass. Too big. Too quiet. The front doors opened before the car stopped. Kael. In black. Coffee in one hand. Phone in the other. He looked like he hadn’t slept. "You’re here," he said. Not a question. "Clause 9," I replied. He nodded once. "Your room is on the third floor. East wing. Away from me." A pause. "For now." A woman in her 50s stepped forward. "I’m Mrs. Hale. Housekeeper. Your things will be brought up." "Thank you," I said. Kael was already walking away. "8am. My office. You start working. You eat dinner with me. You don’t leave the property without me. Understand?" "Yes, Mr. Blackwood." His shoulders tightened at the title. But he didn’t correct me. That night, I lay in a bed bigger than my entire apartment. Silk sheets. No locks on the door. At 2:17am, I woke up to a sound. Not a noise. A pull. In my chest. Low and hot. The bond. Down the hall, a door opened. Footsteps. Stopping outside my room. Three seconds. Then they walked away. I didn’t sleep again. --- ### *8:00 AM. CEO OFFICE.* Kael was on a call in Russian when I entered. He hung up without saying goodbye. "Sit." He gestured to the chair across from his desk. I sat. "Rule 1: You don’t ask about my business. Rule 2: You don’t talk to other wolves without me. Rule 3: You wear this." He tossed something across the desk. A thin silver bracelet. No gems. Just a band. "What is it?" "A tracker. And a shield." His eyes were unreadable. "If anyone tries to take you, it alerts me and breaks their hand. Don’t take it off." I put it on. It was warm. Kael watched me do it. His throat bobbed. "Good," he said roughly. "Now. The campaign." We worked. For hours. He was brutal. Brilliant. He tore my proposal apart and rebuilt it better. At 1pm, Mrs. Hale brought lunch. Kael didn’t eat. Just watched me. "Why are you doing this?" I asked finally. "You could’ve just paid the hospital. Anonymously." Kael leaned back. "Because anonymous doesn’t keep you alive, Arielle. And because..." He stopped. "Because I’m selfish. I want you where I can see you." That was the most honest thing he’d said. At 6pm, my phone buzzed. Hospital. _"Payment received. Surgery confirmed for Friday. Thank you, Blackwood Foundation."_ I looked up at Kael. He was already looking at me. "You’re welcome," he said. "Now come. Dinner." --- ### *10:42 PM.* Dinner was silent. He asked about my mom. I asked about the company. Neither of us mentioned the contract. After, I went to my room. Locked the door even though it didn’t lock. At 1:03am, the bond flared again. Painful this time. Like a hook in my ribs. A soft knock. "Arielle." Kael’s voice. Low. Through the door. "Go away." "You’re dreaming," he said. "I can hear you. You’re whining." I hated that he could. "I’m fine." A pause. "The bond is waking up. It happens when we’re close. It’ll hurt less if you let me in." "No." Another pause. Longer. "Alright." Footsteps retreating. "If it gets worse, call me. I’m across the hall." He didn’t. But I heard him. Awake. All night. --- At dawn, another text. _“She signed. Phase 1 complete. - A Friend”_ I deleted it. My hands were shaking. Kael found me in the kitchen at 6am. He saw my face. "What?" I showed him the text. Kael went still. Then he took my phone. Put it in his pocket. "You’re not alone anymore," he said. "Not for 12 months." He turned to leave, then stopped. "And Arielle?" "Yeah?" "If the bond wakes up fully... I’m not fighting it this time." He walked out. And I was left standing in a billionaire’s kitchen, wearing his tracker, with my mother’s life in his hands and a monster watching me. 12 months. God help me. --- *END OF EPISODE 1
