A nightmare, I never had but was I was never afraid of…
Waiting at the private lounge of the nightclub The Knight Delights I scan the place with interest; crowded, wild, bustling with energy tonight. One-way see-through glass makes it easy to see almost everywhere. Everyone looks like having a great time; People shouting make their voice heard over the blasting music, drowning in colourful cocktails, dancing, swaying their bodies, grinding against each other wall to wall. I can feel the beats of the music thumping in my veins myself. No one can see the dance floor, but somehow as the new one joins, the floor magically makes space for them to fit. The disco ball light launching every shade of rainbow overhead perfectly beautifies the darkness. There is something oddly soothing about this wild place.
However, my impatience was growing with every passing second. I like my weekends peaceful, at home, hiding under the comforter, and drinking coffee. I hate when someone takes away my weekends, especially for business meetings. Why did I agree to this? I am forced to keep my head because Zane has never called before. Never requesting to meet off the records to discuss something very important and urgent. I had to hear this. The only problem is, he was supposed to be here an hour ago!
Bloody Bastard! I curse him glancing at the time for the hundredth time making a mental note to give him hell for making me wait. Taking small sips of my drink, I scroll through my phone to kill time.
"waiting for me babygirl?" I feet his lips brushing on my shoulder, a very familiar cologne & smell of smoke filling the air.
That’s him - Zane Knight, 28y/o hot and sexy CEO of Knight Enterprises; owner of this club, and a pain in the ass. The man starring in the bad dreams of every woman in the city- 6ft, broad shoulders, bronze eye, a model-looking gentleman, straight out of a vogue magazine. His looks compliment his intelligence just right. His reputation precedes him; he gets what he wants.
He scoots closer on the couch. I can feel his bronze eyes on me, everywhere. His mind, wasn’t hard to read; he was definitely not looking forward to discussing business at the moment. He’s got to be kidding me!
"Get yourself a watch Knight, I’m sure you can afford it" I rolled my eyes annoyed.
"did you miss me too much babygirl?" Zane leaned closer brushing his lips on my earlobes. For someone who means business, wasting a second of his time messing around is so unlike him.
The dark shade of the eyes was screaming the lascivious thoughts of his mind. For the short time we've known each other, this tension has always been there. Something unexplainable; a strange magnetic force exists that pulls me to him.
Zane, twirling his fingers in my hair whispered, "come back to me" snaking his arms around my waist, and brushing his lips on my shoulder.
"I'm right here mister"
Zoning out around him is not good…
"you sure you want to call me mister and not anything else babygirl?" Zane winked drinking from my glass. He knows the effect he has on my traitorous body. Damn it!
"I'd like to call you names right now but guess I have to settle with this" And please stop calling me babygirl!. He doesn’t have to know, but it gets me weak at my knees!
Leaning in for more, "I'm sure you'd love to call me daddy in no time" he hisses kissing below my ears to my neck passionately, making my insides squirm. As much as I wanted him not to stop, tonight isn't the time to give in. We were supposed to talk. We have a problem that needs dealing with.
Uh..no..Get a Grip Girl! I pulled myself together & pulled away.
"two can play the games Knight" I cunningly winked at him deciding to move out, to the neutral ground before I do something stupid. We have to have conclusions today or my dad is going to be a real pain in the ass in the next meeting.
I heard Zane curse under his breath behind me; that was a good sign meaning the game he started was backfiring at him.
Good!
Melissa: 1; Knight: 0
Game on!
He followed me to the dance floor, looking determined. I was only starting to feel the music in the heart beat swaying my body, intentionally at him. He stepped closer holding me from behind swaying with me.
“I met your father this week babygirl. He believes you are quite an obedient kid” he whispered.
His voice was dripping desire, yet was serious & business like.
Obedient? Me?
“don’t know what you mean. Youu… of all people know better than to think I have a single obedient bone in me —Daddy” I added deliberately, irking him.
He took a sharp breath, “don’t start something you can’t finish” he warned.
Whoa…Didn’t you just want this just now? I wrapped my arms around his neck grinding against him, “you should know better, than to negotiate with my father. You know I was never a daddy’s girl afterall”
I knew pushing all his buttons were going to lead us exactly where I was trying to avoid tonight, but somehow it was starting to get fun. I was enjoying the look of desperation & frustration on his gorgeous face.
Zane pulled me out of the dance floor to the private cubicle, pushing me against the wall.
“say that one more time” he demanded. The rainbow lights in the dark made his features more sharp. Maybe it was wine kicking in, because I was certainly starting to lose my head.
“say what daddy?” I feign innocence. Oh...those eyes look so beautiful dark…
“That’s it” he took a sharp breath closing his eyes “you want me to f**k you right here or we go somewhere private?” His voice was beyond sexy & authoritative. Super turning on!
Throwing all the caution, business deals, work ethics & sanity out of the window, I decided to let my body do the thinking.
No point denying, I wanted him as much “I want you” I whispered.
He smashed his lips on mine dragging me through a corridor to his presidential suite & kicked the door shut behind. Making out all the way to the bed we helped each other undress. To say there were sparks would be an understatement. We both were completely electrified.
“so f*****g beautiful” he whispered as he kissed & worshipped every inch of my skin igniting me even more. He climbed between my legs looking straight into my eyes, “are you sure babygirl?” he asked. I was unable to form words. My mind was consumed in desire, floating miles away somewhere. I nodded.
“we need words” he growled.
“yes, please!” I need you now! I was screaming in my head. Like the last thing Zane was waiting to hear, he pushed inside me at once. I swear I could see the stars over my head.
***
We lay in bed catching our breaths. Zane rolled over on his side & kissed my head, grazing his finger tips on my belly. Amidst passion running wild, long forgotten was the rivalry- original purpose of the ‘meeting’ tonight. We laid there laughing at each other for some unknown reasons.
Recovering to my equilibrium, I got up from the bed to the bathroom, leaving Zane perplexed behind.
“Wham – bam- thank you-ma’am type, are we?” he commented smirking, confused.
I shrugged, “we need to talk. Remember mister?” how the hell can he forget that HE called me here to in the first place! I splashed water on my face, trying to summon my lost common sense. I was supposed to be here on business….
I could hear Zane curse but chose to ignore and splash more water on my face. Few seconds later he was inside the bathroom, dragging me back to bed, explaining how the matters in hand couldn’t be discussed in the bathroom, and I needed to sit. He gathered his clothes, putting on his pants humming to himself incoherently. I could only catch a few broken words…fucking distraction… think straight…..as he tossed his shirt to me requesting to put it on so we could talk. I was amused, watching him talking to himself like a lunatic. Good that I am not the only one affected here!
Zane cleared his throat racking his fingers through his hair, as if thinking where to begin from. The intimidating, serious, put together Zane looked confused, hesitant and… worried?
“So your father & I have made a deal this week. You see, you are fully aware how disastrous the rivalry between your HiSkyline & the Knight Enterprises is proving to be. About time, we should do something to make peace.”
His unnecessary lecture and hesitation was creating unwanted tension in the air.
And I hate suspense.
I hate surprises when it comes to business.
I hate suspense coming from my father more.
“come to the point Knight” I rolled my eyes, impatiently.
After a pregnant pause, Zane continued,
“—your father came to me with an offer Melissa” My name? Not good… I watched him attentively, waiting him to add something, whatever he was holding back. Zane started pacing around the room, “—he thinks…. and I agree-- that it’s for everybody’s best, if instead of competing, we work together. It’s only way you know, only you have to say yes...” I raised my eyebrows at him, still waiting for the worse to come. Nothing good can come off my father’s brain for me. If it sounds easy, it’s definitely not good... something’s up…
Zane audibly took a breath, “he proposes a merger.. Melissa” and paused, hoping for me to read in between the lines.
“—but…?”
Looking straight into my eyes, he added “but at a sole proviso, you have to marry me”
Wait! What?
….
What?
…
I blinked, blinked again…and again
I could feel my jaw dropped to the floor. I glanced around the room to ensure I wasn’t dreaming & then at Zane, making sure he said what he said. I shouldn’t have touched wine, it’s really starting to mess with my mind now.
“what did you just say?”
“I said he said you have to marry me for the merger to happen. This is the only way out” he repeated.
Did he really said what he said?
Yes, he f*****g did!
I squint my eyes, “are you drunk Knight?” observing him closely for signs. You don’t make sense….
He sat up squaring his shoulders, his demeanor changed to professional, something I recognize and might secretly admire about him… hell, this isn’t the time..I shook the thoughts away.
“do I look drunk, babygirl?” His stern, sharp voice was enough to confirm he was not.
But….“then what’s wrong?” I wondered aloud, “you’re joking... RIGHT! It’s your pathetic idea of prank, I know. Haha, this wasn’t funny…no—”
“—are you touched in the head?” he growled cutting me off, “do I look in the mood for jokes right now?”
He was glaring at me as if I grew an additional pair of limbs dancing like a monkey.
The nerve of him…“YOU are touched in your head. YOU don’t know what you’re talking about!” my voice was growing louder. I started pacing around the room throwing my hands in the air angrily. Do hell with sanity, he already believes I am crazy anyway….
It looked like Zane was expecting me to throw such fits. He was suddenly perfectly calm, back to his graceful self.
How dare he!
“what are you playing at! Playing my father’s owl delivering his insane messages to me?!”
A shred of anger flashed through Zane’s gorgeous and serene face.
“Did you just call me an OWL?!”
“yes I did” I crossed my arms. Why am I the only one angry here?
Zane took small steps closer, towering me.
—uh.ho—
“this isn’t one of MY brilliant ideas. It’s your father’s. Don’t you dare” his voice was calm yet so intimidating, “—and I tried to talk him OUT OF THIS but HE WON’T BUDGE!” he finished in a controlled voice gritting his teeth. I could tell he was having a hard time keeping his temper in check.
even angry Zane is hot…Oh… It’s damn distracting…
I took a deep breath to pull myself together. I know my father well and something of this could be well expected from him. Venting out anger on Zane was futile. My father could be suffering from a disease called ‘I am always an asshole’ but Zane isn’t a fool. If he was actually considering it—talking about it, there had to be something more. I needed to think this through. Zane’s half naked gorgeous body in proximity was not helping at all.
Get a grip Melissa. Don’t be the stupid.
I decided a different approach, a less violent, less angry and more rational approach this time.
“you think this could work? We barely stand each other. You think we could work together? Hell! Do you think we can MARRY & WORK TOGETHER?” I said, finally back to my senses. This is impossible!
Zane turned to the mini bar at the corner of the suite, pouring himself a drink, “I know what you’re saying. Trust me, I had my doubts too. But to be honest, I like the proposal” he took a sip, and continued “see, you’re best at what you do, so am I. We can pull together a team of experts and pool resources. Think about it. That’ll make us unbeatable. The only competition you & I have is each other” he said surprising me. He’s completely missing the point here!
“How Knight? We’re either arguing or having s*x! There is no in-between!”
“that’s a cherry on the top” he winked getting back to his drink, “don’t pretend you don’t see the sparks here” he gestured between him and me. He was being ridiculous although deep down I knew he’s right. If we somehow manage to make peace and come together, that will be one unbeatable team.
Don’t forget the internal problems of HiSkyline Melissa! And there was so much tension between us. It has always been here. It’s undeniable.
I stood watching him for few seconds, weighing the options. But this looks too simple & straight. Why did father talk about this directly to him & not discuss it with me? Why Marriage? We could merge and work, Why….? I knew the answer why – he never discuss anything with me because for him I’m useless! But… I have too many questions…
Zane’s face was masking his anxiety well as he studied me carefully. It looked like it was important for him that I say yes. Like he wanted me to say ‘yes’.
What would the marriage with Knight look like? Even the idea of him being a tamed husband was funny. He may be cocky, irritating and so, so annoying, but Zane is a good man, that I know. But good enough for lifetime….? This was overwhelming. Too much for one night… I had this strange, uncontrollable urge to laugh.
And I did.
I laughed.
My laughter soon turned to hysterics.
I laughed watching Zane Knight. Why is this all so funny?I laughed. I roared with laughter rolling on the bed.
“are you kidding me?” Zane was alarmed. I ignored him.
I’m about to make your life hell!
Sure he was expecting me to throw another fit or something. If anything, laughing Melissa was least of his expectations. I love the mortified look on his face. Let’s have some fun then!
“you want me to say yes when you haven’t even proposed?” My question, I could tell, took him completely by surprise. He watched me bewildered, blinking once, twice, and thrice.
“w-what… are you okay?” he whisper asked. His pupils grew, concentrating hard on me. he watched me like I grew some extra pair of limbs.
I rolled my eyes and turned to bed, “what are you deaf now?”
His face spilt to an infectious grin after making sure he heard me right. His dimples were prominent as he pulled me back to his chest. He tugged me close pushing my hair away from the face, “I don’t do proposals babygirl” he said brushing his lips below my ears, “—however for a girl like you, I might” he sucked my neck hard “—get down, between your knees and take you to heaven” Damn! This man knows to distract! I was melting under his touch. He was doing an incredible job teasing me.
“propose or get lost Zane Knight” I tried my best faking a stern voice.
“does that mean you agree? To this arrangement?” he asked, hope twinkling in his eyes.
Those eyes…STOP right there Melissa! I scolded myself. Tracing his finger on my cheeks, “my proposal involves lots of s*x and no rings babygirl” he said, nibbling on my skin as he tugged my leg around himself grinding me against the bar, “think about it”
Without waiting for an answer, he continued his assault on my neck. Throwing the last shred of self restrain that was left in me, I pushed him against the counter.
“I would buy you a ring then” I said.
“breaking the norms, are we?” he chuckled, gripping my hair as I kissed his neck and claimed me once more. This time, he was claiming his rightful territory on me.
We lay in bed in the afterglow, staring at the ceiling in silence. I can’t say what Zane was thinking, but I was trying to process what just happened.
“does all your meetings end up like this?” he asked playing with my hair as I lay on his chest, “that’ll be a problem” he joked.
How does he do that? Crack the tension with humour all the time?
I rolled my eyes, “not my fault if you fail to keep your hands to yourself Mr. Professional”. He chuckled.
He stretched his hands to reach the jacket on the bedside and pulled my hand close to him. I was paralyzed in shock when he slipped a ring in my finger and kissed my palm, later pressing his lips on my forehead.
Holy s**t!
This just got serious.
Real and serious.
Satisfied with the shock on my face, he rested his head back on his arms pretending to sleep.
The little smile playing on his lips was the evidence of his triumph.
He knew he beat me this time!
