Bound By The Echoes
The neon sign outside the diner hummed with a low, buzz that vibrated straight through the windowpane. Rain streaked down the glass, blurring the streetlights into smeared golden halos across the asphalt. Kaelen Vance wiped down the counter for the third time that night. The clock above the grill read 1:42 AM. In less than six hours, he needed to be sitting in his first-period class, looking like someone who wasn't balancing two jobs and a household on his shoulders. He adjusted his hoodie sleeve, hiding the cheap digital watch ticking against his wrist. "Kaelen, pack it up," Marcus, the diner manager, called out from the back office while counting the register drawer. "You've been on your feet since five. I can lock the doors." "Just finishing the corner booths, Marcus," Kaelen replied, his voice calm despite the bone-deep fatigue settling into his shoulders. "Almost done." He needed every hour he could get. Ever since his father walked out six months ago, leaving behind empty drawers and unpaid utility notices, Kaelen had become the quiet foundation holding everything together. As he stacked the last salt shaker, the chime above the front door chimed. "Sorry, we're closed for the night," Kaelen called out without looking up. "We aren't here for coffee, kid." The voice was cold, crisp, and completely out of place for a rundown street corner. Kaelen froze. He turned slowly, his hand dropping the damp rag onto the counter. Two men in sharp, charcoal-grey suits stood near the doorway. Their coats were barely wet despite the heavy downpour outside. Behind them stood a third man—taller, broader, with an immaculate gold pin shaped like a coiled serpent pinned to his lapel. The symbol of the Sovereign Circle. Marcus stepped out from the back office, his eyes widening. "Hey, what’s going on here? We’re closed—" "Go back inside, old man," the large man in the middle said smoothly, not even turning his head. His gaze remained locked entirely on Kaelen. "This is private family business." Marcus hesitated, looking at Kaelen with a mix of fear and concern, but Kaelen gave him a brief, barely noticeable nod. "It's fine, Marcus. Give us a minute." Once the back office door clicked shut, the leader stepped closer. Up close, his eyes were sharp and devoid of warmth. "Kaelen Vance," the man said, pulling a heavy black leather folder from his coat. "Your father, Richard Vance, failed to meet his scheduled obligations last Friday." "My father left months ago," Kaelen said, his voice dropping into a guarded, cautious register. "Whatever mess he made has nothing to do with me." "That’s where you're mistaken," the man replied, flicking the folder open and placing a single crisp document on the counter between them. "Your father pledged collateral to secure his standing in the high tier. When an associate vanishes, the ledger doesn't simply disappear. It transfers to the next of kin." Kaelen glanced down at the paper. At the bottom, in faded ink, was his father’s signature—and directly beside it, stamped in red wax, was the emblem of the Sovereign Circle alongside an astronomical eight-figure sum. "This is ridiculous," Kaelen said, a sudden spike of adrenaline burning through his exhaustion. "I'm eighteen. I work behind a diner counter. I don't have this kind of money, and you know it." "We know precisely what you have, Kaelen," the man said smoothly. "Which is why you aren't going to pay this back in cash." The man reached inside his pocket and pulled out an envelope made of heavy, cream-colored cardstock, sealed with a crest depicting a silver crown over two crossed keys. He slid it across the counter, right over the contract. "What is this?" Kaelen asked, refusing to touch it. "An opportunity," the man replied. "Starting Monday, you report to Sterling Academy. You will be assigned as a personal assistant to Lyra Sterling, daughter of the estate holder. You will carry out her schedule, manage her security detail, and keep your mouth shut about who sent you." Kaelen frowned. "Why would the Sovereign Circle care about a high society heiress?" The man leaned in slightly, his tone dropping to a quiet whisper that sent a chill down Kaelen’s spine. "Because the Sterling family holds the key to the entire city’s power grid, and Miss Sterling is about to make a choice that could ruin us all. You are going to make sure she makes the right choice. Do this, and your father's debt is cleared line by line." "And if I say no?" Kaelen challenged, leaning forward slightly. The man smiled—a thin, lifeless expression. "Then the debt remains active. And debt collectors are far less patient than I am. You have a younger sibling at home, don't you? It would be a shame if their future was cut short over your pride." Kaelen’s hands clenched into fists under the counter, his blood running cold. They knew about his home life. They knew everything. "Monday morning. Seven o'clock," the man said, turning toward the exit. "Don't be late, Kaelen. The Sterlings don't like to be kept waiting." The chiming bell signaled their departure, leaving Kaelen alone in the dim light of the diner, staring at the golden crest on the cream envelope resting on the counter. The iron gates of Sterling Academy loomed over the morning mist like the entrance to a gilded fortress. manicured lawns, marble pillars, and students stepping out of chauffeured sedans made Kaelen’s worn denim jacket stand out like a stain on white silk. He gripped the strap of his backpack, checking the cream envelope in his pocket one last time before pushing through the heavy double doors of the main administrative wing. He was directed straight to the top floor—the private study reserved for the Sterling family trust. When Kaelen stepped inside, the room was quiet save for the soft tapping of high heels against hardwood. Standing near a floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the city was Lyra Sterling. Tailored navy blazer, dark hair pinned with silver, and eyes that assessed him with the cold precision of a diamond cutter before he even took three steps into the room. "You're late, Vance," she said without turning fully toward him. "By three minutes." "Traffic was rough on the bus," Kaelen said, stopping near the center of the office. "I'm Kaelen." "I know who you are," Lyra replied, turning around and resting her hands on the edge of a mahogany desk. "More importantly, I know why you're here. The Sovereign Circle doesn't send charity cases to act as personal assistants." Kaelen paused, catching himself before his surprise showed. "If you know who sent me, why did you agree to let me in?" "Because an enemy you can see is far more useful than an invisible shadow," Lyra said smoothly. She stepped closer, stopping just out of arm's reach. "Victor Cross convinced the board to place a handler in my shadow to ensure I sign over my family's voting proxy at the upcoming gala. He thinks sending a desperate kid with a debt to pay gives him leverage." "And he's right," Kaelen said bluntly. "My family is on the line. I don't have the luxury of taking sides." "You don't have to take sides to survive, Kaelen," Lyra said, her voice dropping into a low, steady tone. "Victor thinks you're a pawn. But pawns can move across the entire board if they aren't stupid." She pulled a thin, encrypted data drive from her desk drawer and held it out between them. "In two weeks, Victor intends to freeze your father's accounts completely and use the debt to force your family out of the city anyway. He has no intention of clearing your ledger, regardless of what you do for him." Kaelen’s jaw tightened. "How do I know you aren't lying to me?" "Because this drive contains the full financial audit of the Sovereign Circle's internal ledgers," Lyra said, holding his gaze. "Including the erased transaction record that proves your father's debt was artificially fabricated to trap him." Kaelen looked from the flash drive up to Lyra’s eyes. The tension in the room snapped taut. He was standing on a razor's edge between two powerhouses, but for the first time since his father vanished, he saw a way out that wasn't just running. "What's the deal?" Kaelen asked softly. "You play the dutiful assistant for Victor Cross," Lyra said, a faint, dangerous smile touching her lips. "Feed him just enough useless updates to keep him confident. Meanwhile, you help me leak this data to the regulatory board during the gala night. When the Cross family falls, your father's fake debt dies with them." Kaelen took a step forward and reached out, his fingers closing around the cold metal of the drive. "If this goes wrong, we both burn," Kaelen warned. "Then we'd better make sure it doesn't," Lyra replied, holding out her hand to lock the deal. "Welcome to Sterling Academy, Kaelen. Try not to look so out of place." Kaelen shook her hand, feeling the quiet shift in the game. He had arrived as an enforcer's pawn, but he was leaving as an ally to the sharpest mind in the city.
