Ethan's POV:
The party went well. Tyler's brother didn't do anything. He was having fun with his friends. I guess he remembers what happened the last time and avoided his mistake. That is all I can say about him. My best friend was in relief. I, on the other hand, had fun. I didn't go there because of that. The bumping girl was there. I call her like that because she keeps bumping into things. Also, she does it with people. I was one of them. Her high school friendship background wasn't so good. This is why I helped her. I have never been a fake boyfriend before, but I enjoyed this. Her ex-best friend might not believe it, but I did. It's normal for couples to kiss. It was supposed to be a fake one. Only to make others believe it was real. I think I did it more than them. I told her I kept pretending, but it wasn't true. I have tried to date before, but it wasn't successful. We had nothing in common. I wanted to give it a chance, but it wasn't working. Here, everything was different. It looked so natural. It was a fake short relationship. I need to forget about this. Sadly, I don't think it's possible. I shouldn't have kissed her. It's like she wanted it too. That was for a few hours. Probably, I won't see her again. The good news is that I have a new student. Someone needs me. I hope that I will be able to focus on my studies.
I have to meet with my student today. The meeting is at 11 am. Linda gave me the schedule. It's a girl named Ashley Benson. I have no idea who she is, but I don't care. We'll be studying. Nothing else will happen. I have taught girls before. I better prepare some materials. First, I need to know what her struggles are. Also, we need a schedule. I compared ours and marked the free time for us. Of course, I will talk with her. She might have a different opinion. We'll see what will happen.
I'm at university with Tyler and Chloe. We went for breakfast in the coffee shop. Their coffee is not that good, but the food is. I have an hour before my meeting with Ashley. There is room for such things. The university was so good to let us use a place for this. I was eating my food, still thinking about this party. Tyler knows only about his brother. I didn't tell him anything else. He doesn't need to know that. I might talk with Chloe, but it won't be now. I checked the time on my phone to be sure I had enough time.
- When is your meeting with the student? - Tyler asked
- I have an hour.
- Do you have a first-grader or a second?
- First. That's all I know.
- It was a girl. Right? - Chloe asked
- Yes, why?
- Maybe she is struggling with something. Students reach out to mentors for a reason.
- How is your kid? - Tyler asked
- Good. He is a second-grader named Ben. Mister Colman is giving him tasks he can't do alone. I will say some of them are too hard for a second-grader.
- He can talk with the teacher about that. - I said
- He did. Nothing happened. Ben started understanding things, but it took him time.
- What do you expect from your student? I bet she is pretty. - Tyler said
- I don't have any expectations. Some kids only need a little push without that much help.
- Good luck.
- Why aren't you a mentor?
- It's a waste of time. Also, I'm not good at explanations. No one will understand what I say.
- This will be good training for you.
- Ethan is right. You can try.
- No, thanks. I'll pass. Maybe next year.
- We are graduating.
- Exactly.
- Leave him.
- Did you prepare yourself?
- I won't teach anything today. First, I need to find out her struggles. I'll focus on that.
- To understand that you will only meet her and schedule the study sessions.
- Yes. Is it wrong?
- No, it's not. I like to start studying with the kids.
- It's an option, but she might not like the hours I have picked.
- Man, don't you have to ask her?
- Yes, but I took her schedule from Linda. Here are our free gaps. - I said and showed the papers
- I see you have scratched the weekend. - Chloe said
- I'm sure she won't like working on the weekend. I don't mind, but I'll let her go.
- Good luck. I don't know what else to tell you.
- Thanks. I think we'll have success.
At 11 am, I was in the room waiting for Ashley. I have some materials with me, but we won't study now. Also, she has a class soon. I'll check in with her to see which days are the best. We take more days to study if the student has many struggles. Otherwise, I suggest once or twice a week. I pulled out her schedule. In first grade, I was the most excited kid. Now, this is my job. Sometimes, I still can't believe I'm graduating this year. It's unbelievable. Soon, there was a knock on the door, and she walked in.
- You? - both of us said in sync
- You are Ethan.
- Yes. You must be Ashley.
- There must be a mistake.
- Why?
- You can't be my mentor.
- Many people will say I'm pretty good at this.
- How?
- Will you sit, or will you stay up?
- You can't be my mentor. I mean, not after everything that happened on Friday.
- This was a false scenario. Nothing was true. I'm afraid I'm your only option.
- It can't be real.
- I'm here to help. Why do you need a mentor? You were good in my class.
- That was before. I started struggling.
- Here are our schedules. I have marked the gaps when we don't have classes. You can tell me if you are free on these days.
- Let me see. I think I am. It's not like I have something else to do.
- Great. In which subjects you are struggling? I need to be prepared for the first lesson.
- Mister Allen is thought for me. Also, I need a better writing style. I thought mine was good, but it's nothing compared to what the teacher showed me.
- How about this? We'll meet after three days. You will tell me everything you don't understand. I will focus on this. Ok?
- Sure, and thanks.
- Are you sure you are good with this?
- I'll get used to it.
So her name is Ashley. This will be fun. Well, at least for me. I don't know how she feels about that. She has no other choice. I asked Linda if someone else was available when I went to take her schedule. I'm her only option. Everything will be strictly professional. I won't allow anything to happen. We talked for an hour, and I let her go. She bumped into everything before she found the door. Later, I went to my second class of the day. Someone was with Tyler, so I sat next to Chloe.
- How was the meeting with your student?
- I'll have a lot of fun.
- Why? Did something happen?
- It's a long story.
- Tell me. I'm getting curious. Do you know the girl?
- Yes. We met at the opening party.
- Weren't you there because of Tyler's little brother?
- Yes. I also did other things. The boy didn't do anything. He barely drank something.
- Someone has learned their lesson.
- He did.
- What happened at the party?
- If you calm down and don't shout, I might tell you.
- Ok, ok.
- She told her ex-best friend that she had a boyfriend. Since it wasn't true, I pretended to be a fake one. That was after her endless rejections from the other boys at the party.
- You were her fake boyfriend?
- Yes. It didn't work, but that was after I had to make it believable.
- Hold on. Did you kiss her?
- I had to.
- No, you didn't.
- She looked surprised to see me as her mentor. It's not like she liked it. Sadly, I'm her only option.
- A lot of fun.
- See?
- Do you like her?
- What? I talked with her two days ago.
- So? I bet you didn't leave her even after the plan didn't work.
- Does it matter?
- The fact that you answer with a question says enough.
- At least I wasn't bored at the party.
- Admit it.
- Ok, fine. I like Ashley. Are you happy?
- You are, for sure.
- It doesn't matter because I can't do anything. I'm only her mentor.
- I hope you believe what you said.
- Me too.
I spent the entire class thinking about my new student. I shouldn't do anything because I'm her mentor. Well, I think I'll fail. She looks so fragile and innocent, but at the same time, she has big dreams. After the class, I went home. I worked on my novel a bit. I think it's official. This girl will be part of it. I started it because of her. She gives me ideas all the time without even knowing it. I write down everything that happens to me. So far, so good. I went out for a while and saw her walking with her headphones. I don't want to bother her, but I can't stay away. I slightly tapped her shoulder, and she jumped.
- It's me.
- You scared me.
- I'm sorry. It wasn't my intention.
- What are you doing here?
- I got bored staying home, so I went out.
- Home? Don't you stay at the university like me?
- This is only for the first and second graders. I have a small apartment nearby.
- Lucky. You probably live alone.
- I do, yes.
- I would love that.
- But you won't have anyone to talk to.
- It's enough that I talk to people every day. I would love some peace at home.
- What do you want to get? A house or an apartment?
- I want a spacious apartment, which I can decorate however I want.
- What will you do with so many rooms?
- Live in them. In the beginning, I will be alone. I might include someone in the picture later. I haven't thought about that.
- This someone will be lucky.
- Why do you say it?
- Because he will live in a big apartment for free.
- It won't be free. He will help me with the bills and the groceries. I won't pay for everything alone. It doesn't work like that.
- I can share them with you. - I mumbled
- What?
- Nothing.
- Cool.
- Where are you going now? I can take you for coffee.
- Don't you think it's a bit late?
- No one said that you would drink this. If you don't want me here, I'll go.
- No, it's not that. It's just.
- Just what?
- Nothing. Forget about this.
- Alright. I'll see you in three days.
- Wait! I'll come. - she said and ran after me
I took her to one of my favorite coffee shops. I come here often. It's not close to the university, but they have the best drinks. I imagined myself in the picture when she talked about having an apartment and living alone. Probably, I'm not even on her list, but I can dream about this. I might include this in my next chapter. Everything she says or does is like a new idea for me. This novel will be so good. Maybe she is the inspiration I needed. It's not like I will tell her that. Let's see how well we can work together. This should be the main priority. I hope that she won't quit because of me.
