I wake up the next morning to Liam yelling loudly through the mind link.

"Alpha! Intruder! They're almost to the packhouse".

What the hell? How did they get this close to the house?

I run out of my room and shift, shredding my clothes. I run outside, in wolf form, and see a blonde and brown she-wolf barreling towards the house. When she’s less than ten feet away she passes out and shifts back to her naked, blonde, and cut-up human form. The next thing I see is Jack and Kim run out and stand in front of the she-wolf.

“Alpha! Please don’t hurt her!! This was the Alpha’s sister Christine! I thought that we lost her in the fight! She just mind linked me to let me know she had followed the rogue pack and knows where they’re staying. She was afraid that they were following her back. So she didn’t follow normal protocol.” said Jack quickly.

I back off.

“Liam, Jewel, Jack, and Kim!! Secure the borders!! Now!” I say through the mind link. I hear two large wolves run past me. Jack and Kim nod and head to the border. 

I shift, put on a pair of jeans and pick up the she-wolf. She has cuts and bruises all over her. She has obviously been in some sort of fight recently. I bring her to the pack hospital and set her on an open bed. 

“Doc! Fix this she-wolf and let me know when she wakes. “

I run out to the border just in case.

We keep watch at the border for the rest of the day and don’t see any rogue wolves...yet. I’m in my office looking through security cameras. I keep reviewing when Christine passed into our pack lands. Her previous pack had been patrolling. So they didn’t pick up on her crossing. I review the last camera and that’s when I see it. A large black wolf was following her, but stops before he passed onto our land. The wolf runs back into the woods. 

Great. We have a possible looming rogue attack on our hands. 

“Alpha, the she-wolf Christine is awake.” says the pack doctor. 

I quickly mind link Jack and Kim to let them know.

“Jewel, the she-wolf is awake. Meet me at the pack hospital” I mind link Jewel quickly before heading over to the hospital.

“Yes, Alpha. I’ll be right there.”

This day did not turn out the way that I had hoped. I had planned on meeting Sam early to talk to him about how I was feeling, but now we’re both separated because he wants a ranked wolf on the borders until we eliminate the threat. I leave my shift and Liam shows up as I head to the pack hospital. 

I walk into the hospital and I can immediately feel a new alpha aura. I walk into the hospital and I see Sam sitting in a chair next to her bed. My confidence falters when I see that she is both stunning and an Alpha female. She is also unmarked. Literally perfect for our open Luna position.

Well damn. There is no way Sam is missing how attractive she is.

Sam senses my presence and looks up.

“This is my Beta Jewel,” he says, introducing me.

“You have a woman for a Beta?” asks the she-wolf. I don’t blame her for her confusion. Our situation is not common. 

“My mate was killed in the great war. But I’ve fallen in love with this pack. So I’ve stayed”.I say trying my best to be nice. It’s not her fault that she’s perfect, even though she is covered in cuts. 

“Ah, I’m very sorry for your loss. My name is Christine” she says this and smiles at me. Her bright green eyes are friendly. 

“Christine, with you being the Alpha’s sister, and Jack and Kim denying the Alpha position, you have every right to take over the Sunlight pack.”

I watch her face become confused again.

“I’m a woman though...that isn’t how my family did things.”

“Well, it’s an option. Here we honor alpha blood regardless of old rules on gender. My sister Amber has Lycan blood and is the strongest Alpha that I know. I can put you in contact with her. If you decide to become Alpha.” 

As Sam says this he nods and gets up.

“Please think about it, but no pressure. The pack doctor says that you’re lucky to be alive.”.

Sam and I both leave and I can see that something is wrong. We go outside and once we’re out of earshot of anyone I ask.

“Sam, what’s wrong? I can feel your stress from here.”

His face looks sad for a bit.

“Right the mate bond. I’m sorry about that. I’ll try to control it better. Come to my office and I’ll show you.” 

We head into his office and he shows me the video of the large black wolf.

Sh**! This means that there will most likely be another attack soon. We can handle it, but losing lives is never good.

“Sam, we’ll be okay. We’re strong and we’re fighters. The Sunlight pack was a group of peaceful farmers. Their pack training was minimal at best. That’s why the s*******r was so bad. We won’t fare nearly as bad as they did”.

“I know that you’re right. We lost a decent amount in the great war. I don’t want to repeat that. But we know that they’re coming. So we will have to be prepared as possible.”.

As he says this, he gets up from his desk.

“Alpha your shift isn’t for a few more hours,” I say.

“I know, I need to blow off some steam,” he says this and just shifts. Not bothering to undress.

“Do you want me to come with you?” I ask through the mind link.

He wolf tilts his head to the side before he says, through the mind link, 

“I appreciate the offer, but please rest Beta Jewel. I need you at your best tonight.”
