Shadows of Doubt Kael's POV Back at the Bloodfang Pack, my thoughts were not really present. My mind kept floating to the little cabin Aria had awakened in the borders. Haunted me were her eyes, full of a mix of terror and something else I couldn't quite understand. My unusual relationship with her was both alarming and thrilling. There was obvious tension back in the territory of the pack. Reports of attacks and disturbances rippling through the fortress, scouts and fighters moved in a frenzy. As Alpha required my whole focus, the nagging idea of Aria never left my mind. My visits with the pack strategists and senior members were tiresingly repetitious. The same ideas were under discussion, the same techniques questioned. We seemed caught in a cycle of doubt and haste. Beyond simple conflicts and territorial disagreements, I couldn't get rid of the sense that something worse was at work. I found myself diverted more the more I attempted to concentrate. Every time I went to the border patrol, my mind stayed on the times I spent with Aria. Though I couldn't understand why, I felt an odd compulsion to make sure she was secure. I knew it—that was a risky diversion. That evening I felt someone watching me as I got ready for another patrol. It was a sense I had been used to over years. I turned to see Lyra staring blankly from the edge of the room. "What's wrong?" Trying to keep my voice objective, I asked. Lyra's eyes narrowed just a little. "Kael, you have lately been far away. I have seen your regular absenteeism and unfocused behavior. What then is happening? Her voice was cool, yet she had an undercurrent of mistrust. Lyra was not a fool; she was sharp and perceptive, qualities that would have come in handy in her pursuit of dominance. Her eyes gleamed with interest, and I knew she wouldn't let this pass naturally. "Just handling pack business," I said sharply, dodging her look. "There is a lot to handle." Lyra stayed still, riveted on me. "Pack business? Or is there something else you are not sharing? Her comments stung, and I started to get irritated. Lyra had always been keen in seeing when things were odd, and right now she was under close inspection. Her stare weighed me, and I knew she wouldn't be backing down. Though I knew it was a lie, I said, firmly, "There's nothing more." Lyra was sharp enough to see me hiding secrets. "I have to give the security of the pack top attention. If you will let me excuse me. I turned around, leaving Lyra standing there staring determinedly from her heels. Knowing she would delve further contributed to the upheaval I was already going through. I couldn't get rid of the sense that Lyra's doubts marked only the start of my problems as I departed the stronghold. Though the patrol was unremarkable, my thoughts were far from calm. High in the heavens, the moon sent a glittering glow over the deep woodland. My senses were on high alert, and I felt a sense of foreboding. The borders were calm, but I never left feeling under observation. I rounded a corner of the perimeter and discovered something odd—a path of damaged branches and disturbed underbrush. Following the path, my heart skipped a beat as the sensation of peril intensified with every step. It drove me farther into the forest, outside the pack's territory's security. The path stopped abruptly in a little clearing. I looked about, my senses sharp. Though the area was deserted, the air seemed tense. The impression that something—or someone—was hidden closely persisted. I heard a startling rustling. I whirled about, staring down the shadows. From the shadows arose a man covered in a long, flowing robe. Though their faces were veiled, I could feel a strong presence coming from them. "Who's there?," I insisted, my voice low and commanding. The man moved forward and showed under the hood a pair of brilliant eyes. "You have been a busy Alpha, Kael.” The voice had a little menace but was clear and melodic. Tensing, I realized the voice from some far-off memory. The man waved a hand before I could respond, and a flash of dark magic shot through the air. I sidestepped the attack, moving naturally into Lycan shape. My muscles stiffened and I got ready to fight, but the figure moved elegantly and precisely. Their magic was dark and erratic, unlike anything I had ever known. "Who are you?," asks I snared, my eyes narrowed as I sought to guess their next action. The apparition chuckled gently, and it made me shiver down my back. "I find great interest in your most current events. Kael, you have been interfering with affairs unrelated to your concern. Though their remarks were obscure, they were sufficient to cause my blood to freeze. Aria and my developing love for her had caused me to become sidetracked, but suddenly I saw someone observing from the darkness. Someone who objected to me meddling in their preparations. The man disappeared into the night before I could respond, leaving the area empty. My heart thumping, I stood there trying to process what had just transpired. The meeting had rocked me, and the sense of foreboding just got greater. My head whirling with questions, I went back to the stronghold. The warning of the black figure was a sobering reminder of the hazards still to come. Lyra's mis greetings were simply the start; forces beyond my reach were under action. Lyra was waiting for me when I got back to the fortress. She seemed to be waiting for answers, and her look combined concern with will. "You're back," she replied, her voice tinged with a little accusation. "What happened outdoors?" I stammered, searching for the proper words. "I came upon someone having evil magic. They advised me to avoid topics irrelevant to me. Lyra stepped nearer and widened her eyes. Dark magic: Someone else could be it? Shaking my head, I responded, "I don't know." "But it's obvious someone is behind-the-scenes trying to shape events. We must exercise caution. Lyra's face stiffened, and I could see her eyes ablaze with will. "We must ascertain who and why someone is interfering if any is happening. We cannot afford to be unprepared. Her firm comments made sense to me. We had to find the truth behind the warning of the dark figure and shield the flock from whatever threats were ahead. But I couldn't get rid of the impression that Aria was somehow linked to this more general battle even as we talked about our next moves. Duty and desire were blurring lines, and the road ahead was unknown. Looking at Lyra, I could see the will in her eyes, but also a flash of something else—an awareness of the stakes involved. My voice steady, I responded, "I'll do what I can." But I have to find out what Aria is experiencing. More than first meets the eye suggests is involved here. Lyra nodded with a considered look. "Kael, be cautious. More is at work here than you could ever imagine. I couldn't get rid of the notion that the danger was only starting as I left the fortress ready for the next round of our research. I knew the decisions I took would have long-reaching effects as the shadows of uncertainty and dishonesty were creeping in. Though the evening was dark and full of uncertainty, I was resolved to meet whatever difficulties that lay ahead. The relationship I developed with Aria was a strong force that would mold the future in ways I couldn't yet fathom. And I knew that the trip ahead would try not just my will but also my strength when I entered th e darkness. The one certainty was that things would never be the same once more.
