Chapter 1: The Return
Emily Thompson gazed out the window of the bus, her heart thumping in rhythm with the hum of its wheels against the asphalt. The towering skyscrapers of the city dwindled in the rearview mirror, replaced by the comforting sight of wide-open fields and thick woods. A feeling of home washed over her as the familiar landscape unfolded.
She had been away for seven long years, chasing ambitions in the city's concrete jungle. The city had offered her opportunities and experiences, yet it had also engulfed her with its relentless pace, leaving her feeling isolated and yearning for something more... for something real.
Emily had been born and raised in Maplewood, a quaint little town nestled between lush woods and the sparkling Maple Lake. She remembered the tight-knit community, the warm greetings from neighbors, and the annual fairs that brought everyone together. She remembered the simplicity of life, the serenity, the sense of belonging. It was that sense of belonging she missed the most in the city.
As the bus pulled into Maplewood's bus station, Emily's heart fluttered with nostalgia and a hint of apprehension. The station was just as she remembered it, small and rustic, with a single wooden bench painted in a peeling shade of green. The scent of pine and blooming flowers filled the air, a welcome contrast to the city's fumes.
Exiting the bus, Emily took a moment to take in the familiar surroundings. She could see Mrs. Benson's bakery just down the street, the tantalizing aroma of fresh bread wafting towards her. The old diner was still at the corner of the main street, and the town hall's clock tower stood tall against the azure sky.
Tugging her suitcase behind her, Emily decided to walk the short distance to her childhood home. The town hadn't changed much; it was as if time had stopped. The streets were quiet, the houses well-kept, their gardens blooming with colorful flowers. It was peaceful, a stark contrast to the city's perpetual noise and chaos.
As she walked, she saw familiar faces. Mr. Dawson was watering his roses, and he waved at her with a smile. Mrs. Brooks, her high school teacher, was walking her dog, and she stopped to chat and express her surprise and delight at Emily's return.
Emily's childhood home was a charming two-story house with a spacious garden. The white paint had faded, and the garden was overgrown, but it was still the same house where she had spent her happiest years. Unlocking the front door, she stepped inside, the smell of dust and memories greeting her.
With each step, old memories flooded back. She remembered her mother cooking in the kitchen, her father reading in the living room, and her siblings running around, laughing. The house was empty now, her parents had passed, and her siblings had moved away. Yet, it was filled with remnants of a happy past and hopes of a joyous future.
As she stood in the living room, gazing at the family photographs on the mantelpiece, Emily realized she had made the right choice. The city, with its opportunities and ambitions, had been a crucial part of her life, but Maplewood was where her heart truly belonged.
She felt a wave of peace wash over her as she unpacked her suitcase, the rooms filling with her presence. The loneliness that had shadowed her in the city was gradually fading. This was her homecoming, her return to her roots.
As the sun set, painting the sky with hues of pink and orange, Emily knew this was just the beginning of her new journey in the old town. She remembers her school years in Maplewood- they were as peaceful that one could almost fall asleep.
However, Emily is craving that boredom. The last seven years in the big city have taken their toll on her. She went away from Maplewood to pursue her dreams. She couldn't wait to break free from the small, boring town. She dreamed big. And she almost had it- she had her big CEO boyfriend of the largest tech company, she had money and she had the looks- until one day everything crumbled.
Her now ex-boyfriend Mike said he was going to business trip abroad for a month. He would miss her birthday, but Emily did not mind- she understood how important work is. But she did not expect that her best friend from the university, Julia, would also travel abroad and miss her birthday.
Since Emily was rather shy and did not tend to make many friends, she spent her twenty-fifth birthday all alone in her boyfriend's apartment in the tallest building of the city. This time, even the spectacular view could not lift her spirits up. She just scrolled through social media until she saw her best friend's Julia's post. She tagged the same city that Mike was in and she could see a man's hand in the background of the picture.
Emily was rather surprised and decided to write to her friend playfully. "Hey, girlie, mind telling me whose hand is it? It looks like he may be something." But Julia left her on read. It was super weird for her friend to behave like that. She always responded to her messages with light humor.
It took almost a month until Mike came back home, so Emily would understand everything. He asked Emily to come to a fancy restaurant. She thought that he might even propose, so she left the apartment in very good spirits. But when she arrived, he didn't even kiss her. Over the sumptuous meal, he explained to Emily that he had given up on their relationship and wanted to break up.
Emily could barely hold her tears. She really did love Mike and thought that they would get married, have children and be the power couple of the big city. "But why?" She understandably was dumbfounded. "Emily, I-"
Mike started to say right before they were interrupted by a joyful woman's voice. They turned around and saw Emily's friend Julia. The girl was relieved to see her friend, because she thought that they would go home together, when Emily would tell her everything and cry on her shoulder.
But, to her surprise, Julia put her arm around Mike's shoulders and said. "Good. So you did tell her. Look, Emily, how big it is." Julia said whan showing her hand in Emily's face. It had a diamond ring on it. Julia continued "Let's not hold grudges at each other. What was in the past, is in the past."
"I should stop thinking about this." Emily said to herself while sitting on the couch. Suddenly, the room felt freezing. She tried to switch her thoughts to the mindless encounter with Mrs.Brooks that Emily met earlier. There was some new gossip that lady was dedicated to tell Emily, because she was very close to Emily's late mother. She did not mind. It is necessary for old folks to talk to people.
According to the town’s grapevine, he had taken over the old clinic after Dr. Patterson retired. Emily had been curious about him then, but now, as the sun set and she settled into her childhood home, she couldn't help but feel a pang of excitement at the prospect of meeting this newcomer.
In a town as small as Maplewood, a new resident was always a source of intrigue, especially when he was young, attractive, and held a position as important as the town's doctor. Emily found herself wondering about Dr. Jake Miller. Where did he come from? Why had he chosen Maplewood, of all places?
As night fell, Emily took a stroll around her garden, her mind filled with thoughts of the past, the present, and the uncertain future. The garden was overgrown but still held the charm it always had. Her mother's rose bushes were tangled but blooming, their scent wafting in the cool evening air.
She stopped by the old oak tree at the corner, its branches reaching out to the starlit sky. Beneath it was her favorite spot as a child, where she had spent countless hours reading and dreaming of adventures. As she sat there now, she couldn't help but feel a sense of serenity. This, she thought, was what she had been missing in the city. The peaceful silence, the closeness to nature, the sense of being at home.
The sound of a distant owl hooting brought her back from her thoughts. She looked up at the stars, twinkling brightly in the clear sky. Emily felt a rush of hope surge within her. She had returned to her roots, to the place she belonged, and she was ready to embrace whatever this new chapter held for her.
Returning to the house, she found herself smiling. The first day back in Maplewood had been more emotional than she had anticipated, but it was a good kind of emotional. She had reconnected with her past and was eager to create new memories.
As Emily climbed into her old bed, the moonlight streaming through the window, she couldn't help but feel grateful. Grateful for the courage to leave the city, to return to her roots, to seek the peace she had yearned for. As she drifted to sleep, she found herself looking forward to the coming days, to meeting old friends, and perhaps, making a new one in the form of Dr. Jake Miller. Little did she know, her life in Maplewood was about to take a turn she never expected.
