Chapter One – The Boy I Left Behind
Three years. That’s how long it had been since Talia Navarro vanished from Shin Akiyama’s world — no explanation, no goodbye. One day they were tangled in whispered dreams under the bleachers, the next, she was gone. Like a ghost that once knew how to love. She told herself it was the right thing to do. That leaving him meant saving him. But all she really did was tear her own heart in half and leave the pieces behind. And now here she was — older, wiser, still just as messed up — standing in a dimly lit bar back in her hometown. She hadn’t meant to come back. Not really. It just… happened. Like fate had a cruel sense of humor. The bar was humming with life — low music, the occasional clink of glass, the hum of voices blending into background noise. Her friends were laughing at the booth behind her, but Talia couldn’t hear them. Because Shin Akiyama had just walked through the door. Her breath caught the second she saw him. He hadn’t changed — not where it counted. He still moved like the world belonged to him. Still dressed like sin in a black-on-black suit, no tie, the top buttons undone like he didn’t need rules anymore. And those eyes... they were sharper now. Colder. But still the same shade of storm she once drowned in. He saw her. Of course he did. Their eyes locked across the room, and the moment stretched like a held breath. Her stomach twisted. Fight or flight screamed in her veins, but her feet wouldn’t move. He started walking. Every step toward her was slow. Controlled. Dangerous. She panicked. Turned to slip away into the crowd, but she was too late. The past always catches up — especially when it’s wearing a fitted Armani blazer and a look that could start wars. “Talia.” His voice was low. A blade wrapped in velvet. She hadn’t heard it in three years, and yet her body remembered. Her heart reacted before her brain could catch up. And then — just like that — she was backed against the bar wall, his arms on either side of her head, caging her in. His breath fanned her cheek, warm and furious. “I see you still know how to run,” he murmured. Her heart thundered. “Shin—” He didn’t let her finish. His hand came up, fingers rough but gentle under her chin, forcing her to meet his eyes. “Three damn years,” he whispered, voice tight with something that made her chest ache. “And you still take my breath away... even after breaking my heart.” Talia’s throat closed up. The last time she’d touched him, he was laughing under the stars, arms wrapped around her like a promise. Now, he looked at her like a curse. “I had to,” she said, voice barely audible. “You don’t understand—” “No,” he cut in, his tone shifting — low, wounded, furious. “You don’t get to say that. You don’t get to come back and act like this is casual. You left. Without a word.” Her lip trembled. She bit it. He noticed. “Tell me,” he demanded. “Why? Why did you leave me, Talia?” She stared at him, eyes burning. She could’ve told him the truth — about the threats, about his mother’s cold warning that loving her would cost him everything. But the words wouldn’t come. So he kissed her. Hard. Possessive. It wasn’t gentle or sweet. It was years of pain and betrayal and love that refused to die. His mouth moved over hers like he was trying to remind her of everything she’d thrown away. And God help her — she kissed him back. When he finally pulled away, his forehead rested against hers. His voice dropped to a whisper that made her knees buckle. “You’re not leaving me again,” he breathed. “Not this time. I’ll never let you go.” ---
