Someone like him
My eyes lazily open as the light from the windows penetrate, it's yet another day I didn't want to be part off and yet here we are. I dragged myself to the kitchen to prepare breakfast not because I wanted to but because my four year old was finally starting school and I had to get her ready. I wish London was here, but he chose the easy way out and lost to cancer leaving me with a tiny human being who keeps asking where Papa went, what could I really tell her, she's just four.
“Mama, what do you think papa is doing now,” She asks me that question every day during breakfast for the last three weeks, sometimes I wish I was inhumane and shout at her that he left and not coming back, but I hide my burning anger with a Fake smile on my face and replay as I always do.
“He's thinking about his little angel,” And just like that my little Milly would smile and continue eating, sometimes tears would roll down my eyes and each time I wish she doesn't look up and ask why I'm crying, but again if she did that maybe I would have the courage of crying openly.
It has already been three weeks since London died, you would think when we said ‘ till death do us part’, death would take it seriously and take him away from me, you would think I would be already used to it by now, it wasn't the first time for death to take someone important to me, first it was my parents then my siblings and now my husband, I guess I was always meant to be the lonely one.
“ Mrs Carby, I've analysed Millie and she's one of those kids called gifted, at her age she can do all the things that a ten year old can,” listening to the kindergarten teacher talk about Millie, of course she was smarter than her age, she was her father's daughter anyway.
At first it was the best thing ever, Millie was the exact replica of London but now, everything about her just reminds me that he's gone.
“ Mrs Carby! Did you hear what I said, you should take her to a more advanced school for a gifted child like her,”
“ No, I prefer if she stayed here with the rest of the children,” One would call me a selfish mother, and yes I was, the more she became smart the more she became London and the more I couldn't move on.
“ Mama, will I be staying in this school, the teacher is teaching everything papa taught me, it boring,” Millie said in her tiny voice, who at her age would even say kindergarten was boring, she was four, why out of all four year olds in the would she had to be the gifted one.
“ Just give it some time, I'm pretty sure they will teach something your papa didn't teach, do it for me,” as I kiss her forehead, I know the teachers would probably be the ones learning from her.
It was finally time to go back to my old job that I was lucky enough to quit when I got married to London but as a single mother now had no choice.
“ Ladies and gentleman, let's welcome back Lucy, some of you remember her right, she was my best employee of the month till she quit,” James my disgusting old boss announced rapping his hands on my shoulder, I wish I didn't have to go through all that I went through all over again at the hands of this man.
“ Hello, I'm going to be your assistant, am Ark, nice to meet you,”
“ Is that your real name?”
“ Yes, what's that face,”
“ So you will be my assistant right? That means we already have an assignment,” I might not have looked like it but before everything I was a party planner, from weddings to birthdays I could do it all.
“ Yes, actually three of us will be working together, you worked her before, do you remember Calvin?” Ark asked.
“ I do, we were very close,” Calvin was one of my closest friend when I was working here, I was excited and nervous to see him again
Just as I was getting ready to meet the client, do you know one of those things that you know in your head or you don't think could ever happen, call it coincidence or call it fate, what I saw shocked me.
“ Mama!” My daughter was here, holding hands with a man I swear looked so much like London. Had my depression gotten worse, was this a hallucination, was I on drugs and didn't know.
“ This is your mama Millie,” the man spoke and I confirmed my suspicions, there could have only been one logical explanation, I was running mad.
“ Miss Lucy, I didn't know you knew Mr Richard personally, this should be easy,” Ark words didn't bring me back from my shock, I remember that once London did say he had a celebrity look alike bit this was on another level. The one side dimple, blue eyes and straight blonde hair, and all that could just be a coincidence but the voice too, was fate playing tricks on me?
After resetting my brain I got a chance to talk to Richard and find out how he had my daughter and why she wasn't in school.
“ Explain yourself, how do you know my daughter and why is she with you here instead of being in school,”
“ I wish I could explain but everything went by so fast, one minute a little girl was running towards me tears rolling down her cheeks and the next thing I know she's hugging my leg calling me papa,” hearing him say that Millie was crying running up to him made me realise how selfish I had been, here I thought that my little girl was so little that she didn't understand what I was going through, she was just four, what could she have understood, it kind of made me think that the reason she didn't stare back up when eating was because she was hiding tears of her own.
