Chapter 1
The guests, who had been rowdy just moments before, were now completely dumbfounded.
My dear little sister, though, was quick on the draw. She immediately started dabbing at her eyes.
"Hazel, don't be mad at me," she said. "It's not worth throwing your whole reputation away just to win a silly fight."
"Besides, Kian doesn't fall for that whole 'playing hard to get' act anyway," she continued. "Can't you stop picking fights with him just to blame me for it?"
"This is all my fault," she went on. "If it weren't for me, you and Kian would never have ended up like this."
"If I didn't exist, the two of you would have already been engaged without a single hitch," she finished.
The second Mom saw her precious baby crying, she yanked Chloe into her arms immediately, tears of her own slipping down her face as she fussed over her.
"My good girl, what nonsense are you talking about?" Mom said. "This has nothing to do with you at all. It's all Hazel being unreasonable and out of line."
Dad frowned too, and fixed me with a sharp, icy glare.
"Hazel Greene, look at yourself. Is this any way for an older sister to behave? You've bullied her your whole life, isn't that enough? Now look what state Chloe's in, and you just stand there watching with cold eyes? What kind of heart do you even have?" he said.
Listening to them tag-team me like this, my heart went ice-cold, all the way down to my bones.
This was how it always was, growing up. No matter what happened, I was always the one in the wrong.
My ex-fiancé, Kian Mercer. His eyes were also full of pity. He spun around and barked at me.
"Hazel. Can't you cut out these little petty tricks already? Look what you've pushed Chloe to. Can't you just shut your mouth for two minutes? I won't go through with this engagement until Chloe feels better about this," he said.
I laughed in bitter anger at his self-righteous attitude.
"Kian, let me ask you something. What right do you have to talk to me like that right now? Are you my fiancé, or are you my little sister Chloe Greene's boyfriend?" I said.
The second those words left my mouth, the whole room exploded into chaos.
"Oh my god. What is going on here?" one guest exclaimed.
"Wait, is Kian actually messing around with his fiancé's little sister?" another guest whispered.
Chloe flushed bright red, her whole body shaking with rage and shame.
"What nonsense are you all talking? I didn't do anything," she said.
When the murmurs only got louder and louder, she wailed through her tears, "None of you believe me. Everyone just wants to bully me. What's the point of even staying alive."
Right after she screamed that, she spun around and bolted straight for the party hall terrace, leaning far over the railing like she was going to jump right off.
Kian and my parents were so scared they nearly lost their minds.
Mom ran after her, screaming at the top of her lungs, "Chloe, don't do anything reckless. Come down from there right now."
Kian was so frantic that sweat poured down his face.
"Chloe, I know you're innocent. Just come down, okay?" he said.
After he finished cooing at Chloe, he spun around and glared daggers at me.
"Hazel. All of this is your fault. Apologize to Chloe right now and talk her down," he said.
My dad jumped right in to back him up. "That's right. Hazel, apologize this instant. If anything happens to Chloe, I'll never let you get away with it," he said.
I didn't move an inch from where I stood. Watching them scramble around Chloe in a panic, I only found the whole scene ridiculous.
This was my family.
This was the man I had once planned to spend the rest of my life with.
I let out a cold, sharp laugh.
"Apologize? Why on earth would I apologize? She's the one who chose to climb up there. I never pushed her," I said.
My mom spun around and snarled at me.
"How can you be so cold-hearted?" my mom snarled.
I ignored her completely, pulled out my phone, and called a funeral home right in front of every last guest.
"I need a custom-made, top-of-the-line luxury urn. I also want a full set of funeral arrangements, everything at the highest standard possible," I said into the phone.
I hung up the call and fixed my icy gaze on Chloe, who had gone deathly pale up on the terrace.
"Chloe, I got this all ready for you ahead of time. If you actually have the guts to jump, I promise you'll go out in style. I won't cut any corners for you," I said.
