CHAPTER 1 - A REJECTION A DAY
VIOLET'S POV
I hated parties.
They reminded me of the fact that I was an outcast, with no friends, and only one family in the person of an aging father, the Alpha of the Green Meadows Pack.
My name is Violet Quinn. I'm only twenty two, but today, I get mated to the handsome brute and Alpha of a neighboring pack, Alpha Connor Stevenson.
My father, Alpha Darius Quinn, had been the Alpha of the Green Meadows Pack for close to thirty years now and I had never seen him smile the way he smiled at breakfast this morning. He must have been overjoyed that his only child was finally getting mated, and better still, getting mated to a powerful Alpha, even after all the rejections.
Yes. Rejections. I never took count, but I'm pretty sure I had been rejected more than ten times, and in case you were wondering, none of them were painful, because they were not actually my mates.
The whole pack had given up on finding a mate for the wolfless daughter of the Alpha a long time ago and so, different suitors from neighboring packs had been coming around to check if they could "manage" me. Luckily for me, Alpha Connor had finally agreed to manage me. He was not getting any younger and I guessed he had not found his mate as well. Our wedding would give rise to a new and strong alliance. Alpha Connor was the Alpha of the Dark Shadow pack, the largest in New York and my father was only too happy to give me out to him.
"You have to be on your best behaviour today, darling," My father, Alpha Darius whispered in my ears. "Connor is a no nonsense Alpha."
I flashed him a smile, but inside I was dying. Connor was a no - nonsense Alpha. In other words, Connor was an aggressive, bad tempered and foul mouthed brute. How was I going to survive living the rest of my life with such a man?
I wanted to complain to my father as usual, but I knew it would be pointless. If only he could be more patient. I was certain that I was going to find my mate at the right time. I was still twenty two, just six years later than normal. Surely, I had more time to find my fated mate, but my father would not hear of it. He wanted me out of his pack as soon as possible. Deep down, I wondered if he even loved me. Why on earth would he be so eager to send me away if he truly loved me?
"You've barely touched your food, my princess. Are you alright?"
There was a look of concern in his dark brown eyes and I knew it was his vulnerable point - the point where fatherly love overcame all other instincts, the point where I could make him understand that he was making a mistake in giving me off to a random man. I had to capitalize on it.
"Father," I started, with tears etched around the corner of my eyes. "Alpha Connor...I don't think it's a good - "
The sound of the grand doors creaking open interrupted me and he stood up to his feet at once. I was backing the door but from the way his face brightened up, I could tell who had walked in - Alpha Connor Stevenson. My nightmare.
I turned around slowly and our eyes met, or rather, his sea green and almond shaped eyes bored into mine, forcing me to look away, uneasy.
"Is she the one?" Alpha Connor demanded.
"Yes, yes, she is," My father replied eagerly.
Father faced me and took my hands. "Meet your mate, Alpha Connor Stevenson. A fine young man, rich and powerful, a seasoned warrior."
I stood up to my feet slowly and faced Alpha Connor whose eyes were still fixed on me. I wanted to say something, but the words refused to form in my mouth.
He looked up at my father who was waiting for me to say something.
"Is she also deaf? Or dumb? Any physical disabilities so I can make arrangements for - "
"My daughter is perfectly fine, Alpha Connor," My father cut in. "She's just a little upbeat. You know how it usually is...your first time."
Alpha Connor reclined on the sofa and poured himself a glass of wine.
"But this isn't exactly her first time, is it?" He asked after gulping down the entire glass.
"I heard Violet Quinn has been rejected a couple times. She should be familiar with the process by now, don't you think, Darius?"
Darius? The bastard dared address my father without his title as Alpha.
I waited, hoping that my father would see the early signs and decide against the mistake he was about to make, but he didn't.
"This might be your last chance to save yourself, princess," Father whispered harshly in my ears. "Don't throw it all away!"
Save myself? What the hell was he talking about?
He straightened up again and flashed Alpha Connor a smile.
"There," He spread his arms in an inviting fashion. "My daughter is a little shy but she has given her consent. She would be yours from now on. Just take good care of her, please."
Alpha Connor heaved a sigh and stood up gingerly.
"I believe we have covered all formalities," He growled and glanced across at his watch. "We need to move as soon as possible. My people would be expecting a heir anytime from now."
His words jolted me and I felt a surge of electricity flow through my bones.
Did he take me, Violet Quinn, the daughter of an Alpha for a mere breeder?
I looked up at my father, expecting him to say something, but he remained mute. And then, I realized that I was the only one who could get myself out of this mess.
I turned to face Alpha Connor and with a shaky voice, I said:
"I, Violet Quinn, of the Green Meadows Pack, rejects you, Alpha Connor Stevenson of the Dark Shadow Pack as my mate."
