Pain lanced through my head as I stirred, my vision blurry and my body weak. The metallic taste of blood coated my tongue. It took a moment to piece together what had happened—Lucy. Her cruel smile. The strike that sent me tumbling into unconsciousness.
I blinked, struggling to make sense of my surroundings. I was no longer in the clearing but in a cold, dimly lit room. The air reeked of damp earth and rust. Chains rattled as I tried to move, and my wrists ached as I realized they were bound.
“Awake at last," a chilling voice drawled.
My head snapped up, and there she was—Lucy, leaning against the wall with a predatory smirk on her face. Her auburn hair was wild, and her green eyes glinted with malicious glee.
"You should've run when you had the chance," she said, stalking closer. "But then again, cowards like you never know when to quit."
“I did nothing wrong to you, or anyone,”
“Liar!” Lucy thundered, stroking my rib. “You took what I wanted!”.
I clenched my teeth, forcing myself to sit up despite the sharp pain in my ribs. "What do you want, Lucy?"
"Want?" She laughed, the sound harsh and grating. "I want what I've always wanted: my rightful place. But first, I need to get rid of pests like you."
“I am not your problem, or the problem of this pack. The enemy is out there,” I shot back.
“But I am looking at one,” she said coldly.
Her words stung, but I forced myself to stay calm. "You think aligning with Darius will get you what you want? He’s using you, Lucy."
“How dare you! You pest!” She thundered.
Her expression darkened, and in an instant, her hand shot out, striking me across the face. My cheek burned, but I refused to give her the satisfaction of crying out.
"Don’t act like you know anything!” she hissed, crouching down so we were eye level. "You’re nothing but a mistake. A weak, wolf-less girl who’s only here because of some cosmic joke."
“I guess your late mom, or runaway dad, will be ashamed of you,” Lucy muttered.
Her words cut deep, but a flicker of defiance ignited within me. I met her gaze, my voice steady. "You’re wrong. I’m here because I was chosen. Something you’ll never understand."
Her jaw tightened, and for a moment, I thought she might strike me again. But instead, she stood and turned away, her shoulders stiff.
"Enjoy your last moments, Amelia," she said over her shoulder. "Darius has big plans for you."
With that, she left, slamming the heavy door behind her.
Tears roll down my eyes, as her words about my parents, replay in my head, ever since my mom died, everyone blamed me for it.
I slumped against the wall, my mind racing. I couldn’t afford to stay here. Not when Andre was out there fighting for me. Not when Selena might still need me.
Taking a deep breath, I focused on the chains around my wrists. They were rusted, the metal brittle from years of neglect. If I could just...
The faintest sound of footsteps outside the door made me freeze. My heart pounded as I strained to listen. The footsteps were light, cautious—not like Lucy’s heavy, confident strides.
The door creaked open, and my breath caught as a familiar face appeared.
"Selena!" I whispered, relief flooding me.
She rushed to my side, her hands working quickly to unfasten the chains. "We don’t have much time. Darius is planning something—something big. We need to get out of here now."
The chains fell away, and I rubbed my sore wrists as I stood. "What about Andre? Is he—"
"He’s alive," she said, cutting me off. "But barely. He’s holding Darius off, but it’s only a matter of time before..." Her voice trailed off, her eyes shadowed with worry.
“Before what?” I asked, her words held me in suspense.
“He needs our help,” she replied.
I nodded, determination hardening my resolve. "Then let’s go."
We slipped out of the room and into a dark corridor. The stone walls were cold and damp, the air thick with tension. Selena led the way, her steps silent and purposeful.
As we moved, my senses heightened. Every creak of the floorboards, every distant echo set my nerves on edge.
"Where are we?" I whispered.
"Darius’s stronghold," Selena replied grimly. "He’s been planning this for years. Gathering rogues, exploiting their hatred for the council. He’s not just after the pack—he wants to destroy everything the council stands for."
“So how does that has to do with me?” I asked.
“What do you mean?” Selena asked.
“Lucy said, Darius has big plans for me,” I explained.
“Then we have to be careful, you might be the means to an end,” Selena said.
Her words sent a chill down my spine. If Darius succeeded, countless lives would be lost.
We turned a corner, and my heart sank as voices reached my ears. Harsh, angry voices echoing from a nearby room.
"—the girl is the key," Darius was saying, his tone sharp. "Her bloodline ties her to the prophecy. If we can manipulate her power, the moon goddess’s protection will fall."
Lucy’s voice chimed in, full of venom. "She’s too weak to resist. Let me handle her."
“No," Darius snapped. "I have bigger plans for her."
Selena pulled me back, her eyes wide. "We have to move. Now."
We hurried down another corridor, the voices fading behind us. My mind raced with their words. Prophecy? Bloodline? What did they mean?
Selena stopped abruptly, holding up a hand. I followed her gaze and felt my stomach drop.
Ahead of us stood a rogue, his eyes glowing in the dim light. He bared his teeth, a low growl rumbling in his throat.
Selena stepped forward, her voice calm but firm. "We don’t want trouble. Let us pass."
The rogue snarled, lunging toward us.
Selena moved like lightning, her dagger flashing as she struck. The rogue collapsed with a pained yelp, but the noise echoed through the corridor.
“That’s going to bring company," Selena muttered, grabbing my hand.
We ran, the sound of footsteps and growls growing louder behind us. Panic threatened to take over, but I forced myself to focus on Selena’s lead.
We burst through a set of heavy doors and into the open air. The cool night breeze hit my face, and for a moment, I felt a flicker of hope.
But it was short-lived.
Standing in the courtyard, his arms crossed and a triumphant smirk on his face, was Darius.
Chill ran down my spine.
"Going somewhere?" he drawled, his voice dripping with mockery.
Selena pushed me behind her, her stance protective. "Let us go, Darius. You’ve already lost."
“Lost?" he repeated, laughing. "Oh, Selena, you’ve always underestimated me."
He stepped forward, his eyes locking on me. "And you, little rogue. Do you really think you can escape your destiny?"
“I am no rogue! You betrayed your people!” I shot back.
“My people?! Same people that betrayed me years ago? We are both outcast, instead of fighting each other, let’s come together and lay waste to this pack,” Darius said.
“No!” I refused. Selena supported me with a nod.
“Then…..you can’t escape,” Darius replied.
I swallowed hard, forcing myself to meet his gaze. "I’ll fight you if I have to."
His smile widened, his teeth gleaming in the moonlight. "Good. I was hoping you’d say that."
Before I could react, he lunged, his hand outstretched.
Selena shoved me aside, her body colliding with his as they fell to the ground.
"Run, Amelia!" she screamed.
I hesitated, my heart tearing in two. But the sound of more rogues closing in forced my decision.
I turned and ran, Selena’s screams echoing behind me.
