Chosen, Yet Rejected
Amelia
The moonlight bathed the ceremonial grounds in silver, but its glow felt more like a spotlight on my inadequacies. I shifted uncomfortably, wishing I could disappear into the shadows of the surrounding trees. The air buzzed with excitement as everyone awaited the moon goddess’s sign.
“Look who decided to show up,” Lucy’s mocking voice cut through the murmurs. I turned to see her smirking, her warrior’s stance exuding confidence. “I didn’t think you’d have the nerve, Amelia.”
I clenched my fists, swallowing my retort. “I’m here because it’s required.”
She stepped closer, lowering her voice so only I could hear. “Do you really think the moon goddess would waste her blessing on someone who can’t even shift? You’re an embarrassment to this pack.”
Before I could respond, the crowd fell silent. Andre Winston, the newly ascended Alpha, stepped onto the raised platform. His presence commanded attention, his dark eyes scanning the crowd with an intensity that made my breath hitch.
“Tonight, we honor the tradition of the mate-gathering ceremony,” Andre began, his deep voice resonating across the clearing. “The moon goddess will guide us to our destined partners, uniting us for the strength and prosperity of the White Tail pack.”
I kept my gaze low, praying I’d remain invisible. My uncle, Marcus, had made it abundantly clear that I didn’t belong here. Yet, deep down, a small, desperate part of me yearned for something more, for acceptance, for purpose.
As the ceremony continued, Selena, the pack seer, stepped forward, her ethereal presence commanding reverence. She raised her arms to the sky, chanting an ancient invocation. The crowd held its breath, waiting for the goddess’s sign.
Suddenly, a blinding flash of light erupted from the heavens, enveloping me in its glow. My body trembled, my heart pounding in disbelief. Gasps echoed around me as all eyes turned my way.
“No,” Lucy hissed, her face contorted in rage.
“This can’t be,” someone whispered.
Andre’s voice cut through the chaos. “Selena, what is the meaning of this?”
The seer turned to him, her expression serene but firm. “The moon goddess has spoken. Amelia Throne is your mate. This is the will of the goddess,”
A stunned silence followed her words. I froze, my mind reeling. Me? The mate of the Alpha?
Andre descended the platform, his expression unreadable as he approached me. The crowd parted to let him through, their whispers growing louder.
“This must be a mistake,” he said coldly, his eyes locking onto mine.
“I… I don’t know what to say,” I stammered, my voice barely above a whisper.
“There is no mistake,” Selena interjected. “The goddess’s choice is clear.”
Andre turned to her, his jaw tight. “Then the goddess is wrong!”
Everyone gasps as Andre challenged the goddess decision.
My heart shattered at his words.
The crowd erupted in chaos. Some protested the goddess’s decision, while others stared at me with disdain. Lucy smirked triumphantly, her voice rising above the noise.
“Of course, the goddess wouldn’t choose her. She’s wolf-less! She’s not fit to be an Alpha’s mate.”
“She shouldn’t be here!” Another voice added.
Others supported.
“Enough!” Selena’s voice silenced the crowd. She looked at Andre with a mix of defiance and disappointment. “You would dare reject the goddess’s will?”
Andre’s gaze flickered with uncertainty, but it quickly hardened. “I will not take a mate who cannot lead by my side.”
“Why?” Selena questioned.
“Selena, look at her?” Andre pointed at me, as buried my head in shame. “She can’t shift! That can’t be my Luna,” Andre concluded.
Tears burned my eyes, but I refused to let them fall. I turned to leave, desperate to escape the humiliation.
“Amelia!” Marcus’s voice boomed across the clearing, stopping me in my tracks. He stormed toward me, his face red with fury. “You’ve brought shame to our family once again. How dare you show your face here?”
“Uncle, I didn’t—”
“Enough!” he snapped. “You’re no niece of mine. Pack your things and leave my house tonight.”
Pain stabbed through my chest, but I nodded, my voice barely audible. “Yes, Uncle.”
As I turned to go, Darius, the pack beta, stepped forward, a calculating smile on his face. “Marcus, perhaps we shouldn’t be so hasty. Amelia’s disgrace could serve a purpose.”
“What are you suggesting?” Marcus asked, narrowing his eyes.
Darius’s gaze lingered on me, sending a chill down my spine. “Let’s discuss it privately.”
Andre’s voice interrupted their exchange. “This conversation is over. The ceremony is done.” He glanced at me one last time, his eyes filled with a mixture of anger and pity. “Leave.”
I fled the gathering, my vision blurred with tears. The rejection, the humiliation, the hatred, it was too much.
But as I disappeared into the forest, a scream shattered the night.
I spun around, my heart racing. Smoke rose in the distance, and the sound of fighting echoed through the trees. The pack was under attack.
“Rogues,” someone shouted in the distance.
My instincts screamed at me to run, but something deep within me refused to leave. I turned back toward the chaos, a strange, unfamiliar energy surging through me.
For the first time in my life, I felt a spark of power, a power that could no longer be ignored.
