The forest was alive with the sounds of chaos, howls of pain, the clash of claws against flesh, and shouts of terror. My legs trembled, but I forced myself to move, stumbling back toward the gathering. The smell of smoke and blood filled the air as I pushed past trees, my heart hammering in my chest.
"Amelia!" a voice called, frantic and panicked.
Selena.
I turned to see her running toward me, her ethereal robes streaked with dirt and blood. Her calm, otherworldly demeanor was gone, replaced by fear.
"What are you doing here? You need to run!" she said, grabbing my arm.
"But the pack—"
"There's nothing you can do right now," she interrupted, her eyes scanning the forest. "The rogues came prepared. They’re targeting us, and…" She hesitated, her voice dropping. "I think they’re here for you."
“For me?” The words barely left my lips.
Selena nodded grimly. “It’s no coincidence. This attack is too coordinated. They left something behind, an item tied to your family.”
“My family?” I asked.
“Yes, your family, you need to run!” Selena said.
My stomach twisted. My uncle’s accusations, the hatred in his voice, suddenly made sense. “Marcus… He’s behind this, isn’t he?”
“I don’t know,” Selena admitted. “But you can’t stay here. The council will use this as an excuse to condemn you.”
Before I could respond, a chilling howl echoed through the forest. My blood ran cold.
“They’re closing in,” Selena said, her grip tightening on my arm. “We need to go!”
But something rooted me to the spot. I couldn’t just run while the pack was being torn apart, while people, people who hated me, yes, but still my pack, were dying.
“No,” I said, shaking my head. “I won’t leave.”
Selena stared at me, disbelief etched across her face. “Amelia, you’ll get yourself killed!”
“I can’t keep running,” I said, my voice firm despite the fear coursing through me. “If they’re here because of me, then I need to face them.”
A sudden roar cut through the air, and my heart nearly stopped as Andre appeared, blood staining his clothes and a wild, desperate look in his eyes.
“Amelia!” he barked, his voice a mix of anger and relief. “What the hell are you doing here?”
“I—”
“Go!” he ordered, his tone leaving no room for argument. “This isn’t your fight.”
But it was. Somehow, deep down, I knew it was.
“I’m not leaving,” I said, meeting his gaze. “This is my pack too, whether you like it or not.”
“You can’t even shift!” Andre said.
Andre’s jaw clenched, his frustration evident. But before he could respond, a group of rogues burst through the trees, their eyes gleaming with malice.
“Stay behind me,” Andre growled, shifting into his wolf form in a flash.
Selena pulled me back as the rogues charged, their snarls filling the air. Andre lunged at the first one, his powerful frame colliding with the rogue’s in a blur of fur and teeth.
Selena’s voice was a whisper in my ear. “You have power, Amelia. I’ve felt it. You just need to find it.”
Her words sent a jolt through me. Power? I had no wolf, no strength. I was nothing but an outcast.
But then, as the battle raged before me, I felt it again—that strange, unfamiliar energy bubbling beneath the surface. It was faint, like a whisper, but it was there.
“Focus,” Selena urged. “Close your eyes and feel it.”
I hesitated, the chaos around me pulling at my attention. But then I saw Andre falter, a rogue sinking its teeth into his side.
“No!” The word tore from my throat as the energy surged, stronger this time. My vision blurred, and for a moment, everything else faded away.
When I opened my eyes, the rogue attacking Andre was flung backward, crashing into a tree with a force that left it unconscious. Andre turned to me, his wolf form staring in shock.
“What… was that?” he asked, his voice gruff as he shifted back to human form.
I didn’t know. My hands trembled as I looked at them, the faint glow of power fading.
Selena exhaled.
“We need to leave,” Selena said again, urgency in her tone. “Now.”
Andre’s gaze hardened as he looked at me. “This isn’t over,” he said. “You and I will talk about this later.”
But later might not come. Because even as we turned to flee, the sound of more rogues closing in surrounded us.
And this time, there was no escape.
