Chapter 1
The rain hit onto the windshield with so much force it was impossible to hear my parents in the front seat. I wasn’t too concerned with what they were talking about anyway. I was exhausted. My first ever volleyball game had just finished and we had won. I even managed to make a spike. Not too bad for a middle schooler if I do say so myself. My head came to rest against the cold glass of the backseat window as I began to doze off. Fall nights always make the darkness come faster, making it easy to drift off. “Hang on!” Was the last thing I heard my father say before the front of our vehicle collided with the concrete guardrail of the bridge. The force of the impact sending all three of us rocketing forward. My head connected with the back of my mother’s seat, instantly making me see spots. I couldn’t tell if it was actually silent or if I just couldn’t hear anything from the ringing in my ears. I look around the seat to see both of my parents slumped over in their seats. Glass from the shattered windows was all over the dashboard and on my parents. Neither of them were moving. “Mom? Dad?” I called out to them, hoping to hear even the slightest sounds from either of them. The car began to have a rocking feeling, as if it were a ship, going back and forth. It was only then, I noticed the car was barely balancing on the side of the bridge. I pray that someone will get here to help us soon. Only seconds later, the car shifted and began it’s plummet to the icy river below us. A scream pierces through my lips. I’m sitting up straight in bed as my Aunt Nicole comes bursting through my bedroom door. She has a look of concern on her face, she did every time she’s come in from me screaming in the middle of the night. It has been five years since the accident and my parents passing away. The dreams have become fewer and farther between them, but they always come around more as we get closer to the anniversary of it all. “Are you ok, Cecily?” Aunt Nic asks catching her breath from being half asleep and jolted awake. “Yeah, I’m ok.” I say, while giving her a halfhearted smile. “Just the dream again.” “I figured as much.” She said as she sat on the end of my bed. “Do you need to talk about it?” She was always so sweet and willing to be an ear if I needed someone to talk to. I shake my head in response. “Ok.” She gives the end of my comforter a pat. “If you need me, I’m just down the hall. Try and get back to sleep.” I didn’t know if I would be able to fall back to sleep but I was going to try. I have school tomorrow and falling asleep in class wasn’t an option. Luckily, it didn’t take long for sleep to overcome me. Morning was here before I liked, but I waisted no time with getting ready. I stood in my closet for a good ten minutes debating what I was even going to wear today. I went back and forth on a few things before deciding on a simple pair of skinny jeans and a button down top with my ankle boots. I pull a brush through my long buttery blonde hair throwing it up into a ponytail. The soft curls fall down just touching my shoulders. I quickly apply some mascara and lipgloss before grabbing my bag to head out the door. “Hey Aunt Nic,” I say as I make it to the bottom step. “I have volleyball practice tonight so I be home a bit later.” “That works out great,” she responded. “I have a later shift at the hospital, but I should be back about the same time as you. If not, shortly after.” Aunt Nicole is a nurse for Andrew’s Memorial Hospital. She is great at what she does. I don’t know if I could handle the gore. Any gore, from even just a movie, had me pushing back the bile in my throat. Yuck. “See you then.” I grabbed an apple from a bowl on the counter and headed out the door. Woods Creek High School was just your typical run of the mill high school. It has its many forms of cliques; the populars, if you don’t look like a Barbie doll than need not apply. The brainiacs, you could normally find them in one of the science classrooms or the library tutoring. The jocks, normally the ones being tutored or found in the gym weight room at any hour of the day. The thespians and the goths intermingle with each other most of the time, unless there’s a show in production than it’s all hands on deck for the theater rats. And then, there’s them! The most attractive, strong, and graceful individuals I’ve ever seen. I don’t even have a name for the group that they belong to. The guys have chiseled physics from those of Greek gods. The girls would easily put any runway or magazine model out of a job. Their hair looks like spun silk and your just waiting for the birds to start chirping as they walk to class. Anyone staring for too long would surely be caught drooling. I don’t really fall into any of the categories. I do play volleyball for the school, but wouldn’t consider myself a jock. Me having to lift any kind of weight is pretty laughable. I also make pretty good grades as well, but I know that I need to get scholarships or I won’t be able to pay for college. My Aunt Nic said she was more than willing to help out, but I could never ask her to do that. “Hey Cec,” my best friend April comes bouncing up next to me at my locker. She has been my best friend ever since first grade and she save me from Jeremy, the glue eater, pushing me down on the playground. “So how was your weekend on lockdown?” I close my locker and turn to face her. With an incredibly dramatic eye roll she went on and on about her mom completely overreacted and it was just a little dent in the car. I couldn’t hold back the chuckle, knowing full well that she took out a whole mailbox while obtaining that ‘little dent.’ She makes a shocked face uses her elbow to nudge me, while trying to hold back her giggles. Trigonometry was probably one of my least favorite subjects, but I’m not sure if it’s because I don’t like it or because of Mr. Thompson. He made the subject as boring as it could possibly be and with the little sleep I had last night, I was set up to fail. Luckily, April sits next to me and is always good at offering up some distraction. “Garrett was talking about having a party after the football game this Friday.” April leans over to say, while she pretends to take notes on what the teacher is saying. “Think your Aunt will let you go?” Garrett is one of the edgy cool guys and April has a total crush on him. Even though going to a party was not on my to-do list, I know that April would eventually talk me into it anyway. “I’m sure she won’t care.” I respond and nod my head. Once the bell rang we quickly moved out into the hallway where everyone was buzzing about Garrett’s party. Man, it doesn’t take long for news to spread.
