12 Retribution

Lisa’s face became even paler if that was even possible as she cradled the broken ring to her chest and sobbed like a broken child.  Everyone that was surrounding her was shocked into silence by the effect their actions had caused in the woman huddled on the floor before them.  Dana was the only one unaffected by the sight of the woman crumpled on the floor like a broken doll.  Instead of remorse like those around her Dana felt a thrill of satisfaction at the other woman’s pain, she couldn’t have been happier to see the ring in shambles and the devastation it caused Lisa. Ryan appeared and saw the blood trailing down Lisa’s fingers to make its webs of red lines down her arms and dripping off her elbows to mix with the rivers of wine on the floor beneath her.  The sight broke his heart and started a fire of rage burning in his gut.  She was homeless and recently divorced on top of being blind and unable to defend herself yet people still took pleasure in bullying her.  Running to her to give comfort he saw her shrink away at the sound of approaching footsteps and called out to her.  “Lisa, it’s me.” She turned to him with tear streaked cheeks and held out her broken fingers to show what she had cradled to her heart.  “Doctor Davies what can I do?  My…my ring…my ring is broken.”  He looked into her cradled and bloody fingers and saw the wedding ring.  It sat with its band cracked and twisted, the once shining diamond now gone.  He looked around on the floor and felt a pang of despair hit him at the realization that with all the glass and destruction the chances of finding the gem, let alone finding it intact, were dismal at best. He directed a cold stare to the manager of the restaurant as he picked Lisa up off of the floor.  How could this have happened?  Didn’t he direct the man to look out for her and yet here she is abused and broken under his very watch.  He crooned into Lisa’s ear that they would find a way to repair the damaged trinket as she again held it against her beating heart while laying her head against his chest in defeat.  Sparing a moment to address the manager he spoke quickly.  “Lead the way out of this mess so that we can get her the medical attention she needs in a space that is clean.” The manager dipped his head in shame for having not protected the woman who had quickly become the jewel of the restaurant.  He led Ryan and Lisa to an area of the VIP lounge that was vacant so that they would not be disturbed while they attended to her wounds. Dana looked around at the state of the room now that Lisa had been rescued and sniffed in disdain.  Now that the entertainment had been removed she saw no reason to hang around.  Turning to leave she glanced in the direction of the VIP rooms that lined one wall and felt her blood pool to her feet.  Turning quickly she charged up to the man who had stepped on Lisa’s fingers and beat her fists against him in a show of rage.  Looking to the side of her vision she had to make it look believable.  Yelling she made sure to raise her voice so that everyone on the floor could hear her above the commotion.  “What is wrong with the lot of you?  You all must be so deranged to pick on a blind woman and break her hands like that!” The men looked at her like she had grown two heads with her reaction.  She had been in on the whole moment with them and now she turned on them as if she hadn’t been taking joy in the cries of the blind woman as they had harassed her a moment ago.  He was about to brush her off as a crazy woman like some Jekyll and Hyde creation from the story when he caught movement to his side. Before he could even react a strong man slammed him against the wall.  Choking he clawed at the hand around his throat until he met the gaze of the man that pinned him.  He froze in an instant at the aura that was projected as rage filled orbs stared back.  A cold sweat broke out along his spine and he couldn’t help the way his heart skipped a beat as if it wanted to stop working right then and there.  His eyes darted to his friends, but they were no help as they too were frozen stiff by the rage that wafted from the man in crushing waves as his body practically trembled with the urge to murder. Blaine had been in one of the VIP rooms with a business partner hammering out some business deal when he had heard a commotion outside the door.  He hadn’t thought much of it other than the passing irritation that these rooms were supposed to be soundproofed.  That was until he heard Lisa’s name called and realized that he recognized at least some of the voices in the fray.
