Chapter 1 When My Boyfriend Cheated
The evening was painted in soft city lights and the hum of distant laughter, a perfect backdrop for what should've been a night of celebration. Instead, I stood frozen, feeling like a marionette whose strings had been cruelly tangled by fate. Not far away, my boyfriend, Ash Rothman, was locked in a heated kiss with Kiana Kage, whom he'd once assured me was just a friend.
My world splintered.
At my feet lay the cheerleading uniform and the carefully wrapped gift.
It was something I had spent days picking out after scouring every store.
It was meant to celebrate his latest victory with the school football team. I'd even lied, saying I couldn't join him tonight, just to surprise him.
But the surprise was on me.
There they were, completely lost in each other, their tongues tangling with a fervor that made my stomach turn. They didn't even notice me standing just a few feet away.
I watched as Ash's hand, the same one that had once touched me, slipped into her pants.
If the venue hadn't held them back, they'd likely already be tangled in bed.
"Let's go to the hotel," Ash murmured, his voice thick with lust, as if nothing mattered but the carnal hunger in his eyes.
A laugh escaped her lips, breathless with desire, as she whispered, "Aren't you afraid Melissa will get mad?"
Her arm draped around his neck, her chest pressing shamelessly against his face.
Her gaze was a mix of challenge and seduction.
Ash's eyes were a little glazed, her voice thick with the kind of tension that comes from being consumed by desire.
Ash chuckled, his tone dismissive. "Melissa? Please. She'll never know as long as I don't tell her."
"So, you're planning to keep her in the dark?"
"Of course," Ash said with a careless smirk. "You too, don't you? You play nice with her during the day while we sneak around behind her back. Isn't it thrilling?"
She had been hit right on the mark by Ash. With a smug grin, she jabbed her finger into his chest, her voice dripping with satisfaction. "Oh, I love it. Watching her play the perfect little girlfriend while we do this? Priceless. Tell me, Ash, is she clueless or just plain stupid?"
"Definitely stupid," he murmured, his hand gripping her in a way that made her moan.
She grabbed his hand, her voice dripping with horny. "Let's go to that hotel. Now."
Hearing my boyfriend say that to my best friend broke something inside me. The pain was unbearable.
So this was how they had been thinking about me all along.
I watched as they quickly paid and hurried off, heading for the hotel. I wanted to scream, to storm over there and kill both of them.
This wasn't their first time, I realized. Their ease, their routine, it all pointed to an ongoing affair.
If they were already this reckless in a restaurant, I couldn't even imagine how far they'd go in a hotel.
I thought back to that day at school when Ash introduced me to that b***h. She looked at me with envy, admiring how perfect Ash and I were as the golden couple on campus.
But who could've known?
Those loving gazes I thought were shared between us were nothing more than signs of his secret affair with her.
Every time I couldn't find him on campus, or when he said he was busy, was he really out there, laughing at how stupid I was while they were making love?
Did Ash bring his p***s, had explored her before me, into me without even bothering to wash it?
The thought churned in my stomach, a wave of disgust crashing through me.
In their eyes, I was nothing but a fool, a puppet in their private game.
My heart felt like it had been torn into a thousand jagged pieces, and the pain came crashing over me like an unforgiving tide.
Just as I was sinking into despair, barely able to breathe, a familiar yet distant embrace wrapped around me from behind, pulling me close.
My best friend... Elrod Melville!
The one who had shared so many joyful moments with me in the past now stood there like a beacon of light in the darkest of times. In my most hopeless, desperate moment, he had appeared as if by some miracle.
"Elrod..." His name slipped from my lips, trembling with disbelief and raw emotion as I felt the weight of the pain surrounding me. He had come surprising me, hugging me in a way I hadn't known I needed.
His hair, slightly tousled, framed a face that was both fierce and commanding. His high cheekbones and strong jawline made him look almost unapproachable. His lips were pressed tight, the kind of expression that told everyone he didn't suffer fools.
He was tall and powerful, his muscular frame evident even beneath the dark athletic clothes he wore, radiating strength with every move.
And yet, in that moment, he held me, his icy gaze fixed on the direction where my boyfriend and best friend had just driven off together.
"Want to give it a try with me?"
I froze, my breath catching in my throat, unsure if I had heard him correctly.
He didn't hesitate. "Kiss me. Sleep with me. I don't care. But I'll gladly ruin Ash Rothman if you don't want that. Whoever hurt you, I'll make sure they regret it."
His words were sharp, as though they were meant to comfort me. But they only left me more uncertain of trying something out with him and, somehow, more intrigued.
If Ash could be with my so-called best friend, why couldn't I try something with Elrod?
Would Ash lose his mind if he knew about me and my friend?
I couldn't let this chance to make Ash regret it slip away.
"Melissa..."
I snapped back to reality at the sound of Elrod's voice. Before he could finish, I lunged at him, kissing him fiercely without hesitation.
"Fine. Let's try it. Kiss, s*x, whatever! But I'm going after them. Elrod, help me find where they're staying. You have ways, I know it."
My breath was ragged. My lips still pressed against his neck as I clung to him.
He was so much taller than me, his body a fortress!
I didn't see the coldness in his eyes, the glint of something distant, something guarded, as I buried myself in his embrace.
His strong arms wrapped around me, shielding me from everything.
He pushed me back gently, his gaze intense as it met mine. "Melissa, if you're going to use me, at least don't be so indirect. Stop mimicking my words. You don't care about me at all, do you?"
I looked up at him, his broad, muscular shoulders feeling like they could bear the weight of the world.
His muscles were like sculpted stone, each curve and line speaking of strength and raw power.
In fact, his build was even more impressive than Ash's, the star player on the football team, whose own athletic frame was something to behold.
A satisfied smile tugged at my lips as I ran my fingers along Elrod's shoulders, my gaze lingering on him with something that was almost appreciative.
"Not willing, huh? Fine. I'll find someone else."
As I turned to leave, Elrod grabbed me with a force that made my heart race. He yanked me into the car, slamming the door shut behind us.
His eyes locked onto mine, his voice low and dangerous. "If you find someone else, Melissa, I'll kill him."
