Chapter 1
Alice Campbell wiped her sweaty palms on her apron as she surveyed the bustling kitchen of Campbell's Catering. It was the week of her father's memorial service, and the family business was in full swing. Alice had taken over the company after her father's passing, and she was determined to make him proud.
"Are the appetizers ready yet?" Alice called out to her cousin, Mia, who was manning the oven.
"Almost there!" Mia called back, her voice muffled by the sound of sizzling pans.
Alice sighed and checked her watch. The guests would be arriving in less than an hour, and she still had a million things to do. She knew that her father would have been proud of her, but it was hard to shake the feeling of inadequacy that lingered in the back of her mind.
As she worked, Alice couldn't help but think about Ethan Blackwood, the mysterious and enigmatic billionaire who had recently become a client of Campbell's Catering. He had placed a large order for his company's annual gala, and Alice had been tasked with overseeing the event. From the moment they had met, there had been an undeniable chemistry between them, and Alice found herself drawn to him in a way that she couldn't explain.
But something about Ethan didn't sit right with Alice. There was a darkness in his eyes that made her uneasy, and she couldn't shake the feeling that he was hiding something. Despite her reservations, she found herself growing more and more infatuated with him with each passing day.
Just then, Alice's phone buzzed, pulling her out of her thoughts. She glanced at the screen and saw that it was a message from Ethan.
"Can't wait to see you tonight," the message read.
Alice felt a flutter in her chest as she read the words. She knew that she shouldn't be getting involved with a client, especially one as mysterious and dangerous as Ethan, but she couldn't help herself.
As the first guests began to arrive, Alice pushed her doubts aside and focused on the task at hand. But as the night wore on, she couldn't shake the feeling that something was about to go wrong.
The memorial service was a blur of tears and condolences. Alice's family and friends offered their sympathies, but she felt numb and disconnected from everything around her. All she could think about was Ethan and the strange hold he seemed to have over her.
As the last of the guests filed out, Alice collapsed onto a nearby chair, exhaustion and grief weighing heavily on her. It was then that she heard the unmistakable sound of heels clicking against the tiled floor.
"Ms Campbell?"
Alice looked up to see Ethan standing in front of her, his dark hair tousled and his eyes intense.
"Ethan," Alice said, trying to hide the flutter in her chest. "What are you doing here?"
"I wanted to pay my respects," Ethan said, his voice low and smooth. "Your father was a great man."
Alice felt a pang of sadness as she thought about her father. He had built the catering business from the ground up, and it was his legacy that Alice was now tasked with carrying on.
"Thank you," Alice said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Ethan crouched down in front of her, his eyes locking onto hers. "Alice, I know that we've only just met, but there's something between us. Something powerful and undeniable. I can't stop thinking about you."
Alice felt her heart racing as Ethan spoke. She knew that she should pull away, that getting involved with a client was a bad idea, but she couldn't resist the pull that she felt towards him.
"Ethan, I don't know if this is a good idea," Alice said, her voice trembling.
Ethan took her hand in his, his touch sending shivers down her spine. "Trust me, Alice. I'll take care of you. I'll make you mine."
As Alice looked into Ethan's dark eyes, she felt a sense of foreboding wash over her. She knew that getting involved with him was a mistake, but she couldn't resist the pull that he had over her.
Little did she know that her decision to get involved with Ethan would change her life in ways that she could never have imagined.
As Alice and Ethan stood there, their hands intertwined, Alice couldn't help but feel like she was caught in a web, one that she wasn't sure she could escape from.
Suddenly, a voice cut through the tension, causing Alice to jump. "Alice, there you are!"
Alice turned to see her cousin, Mia, standing in the doorway, her eyes wide with surprise.
"I've been looking all over for you," Mia said, her gaze flicking between Alice and Ethan. "Is everything okay?"
Alice quickly pulled her hand away from Ethan's and stood up, trying to compose herself. "Yes, everything's fine. I was just saying goodbye to a client."
Mia raised an eyebrow but didn't press the issue. "Okay, well, we still have a lot of work to do. The Blackwood gala is in three days, and we need to make sure everything is perfect."
Alice nodded, feeling grateful for the distraction. As she and Mia headed back into the kitchen, she couldn't help but glance back at Ethan. He was watching her, his expression inscrutable.
Over the next few days, Alice threw herself into her work, pouring all of her energy into making sure that the Blackwood gala was a success. She barely had time to think about Ethan, and she tried to push the memory of their encounter at the memorial service to the back of her mind.
But no matter how hard she tried, Alice couldn't shake the feeling that something was off about Ethan. He was charming and handsome, but there was a coldness to him that made her uneasy. It was as if he was always watching her, studying her every move.
On the day of the gala, Alice was a bundle of nerves. Everything had to be perfect, or she risked losing the business that her father had worked so hard to build. As she oversaw the final preparations, she caught a glimpse of Ethan out of the corner of her eye. He was dressed in a sleek black suit, his eyes scanning the room.
Their eyes met, and Alice felt her heart skip a beat. She tried to look away, to focus on the task at hand, but she couldn't shake the feeling that Ethan was up to something.
the guests began to arrive, Alice did her best to put her worries aside and enjoy the evening. But as the night wore on, she couldn't shake the feeling that something was about to go wrong. Little did she know that her instincts were about to be proven right.
