Trapped
"Release me this moment"
The girl behind the door pounded on the door continuously, her cries echoing through the empty hallway. Realizing that no one was around to hear her pleas, her crying stilled. Silence reigned over the hallway and the girl behind the door at the dark corner, struggled to accept her fate.
Her heart was pounding in her chest, her breaths were erratic as fear coursed violently through her veins.
She was finding it so hard to accept her fate.
Was she destined to be killed in this never-ending wars going on between those two families?
She knew that one day or another, she'd bear the brunt of her actions when she made that deal with him, and accepted to be his spy, in exchange for her brother's life but she didn't expect it to come to this, at least not this early.
She hadn't even yet got the opportunity to see her brother and now she was captured. Dread rose up her throat as she thought of the outcome of this.
The agonizing part was not being able to figure out which of the families kidnapped her, she had no idea since she was ambushed from behind and rendered unconscious, through the use of chloroform.
She had only just regained consciousness and she found herself in this dark room, without any idea of how long she had been kept here.
She tried to be calm and calculating, Noting that they had already dropped her in their hideout and now she was left in this dark room, to which she presently occupied with no food nor water.
She could only see a small ray of light due to the small window that did little to no help in ventilating or lighting up the room.
Still unsure of her next plan of action, she walked round the room and her eyes surveyed the room seemingly to find a way to escape or find something to use to defend against the impending danger.
If there was going to be any but all that was in the room was the walls that felt like they were closing in on her or maybe it was just her anxiety that made her see things.
As she paced around the dimly lit room, her eyes scanned the space for any means of escape or defense. The small window allowed only a sliver of light, casting long shadows across the cold, dusty floor. The walls seemed to close in around her, amplifying her anxiety.
She noticed that aside the door and the small window, there was nothing else in the room, except herself. Those were the only things that occupied the room.
The girl felt at a loss, since she saw nothing that could help her escape or defend herself.
She knew this was where it all ends but she didn't want it to end here, she didn't want to die alone without her only family and friend by her side. She didn't want to be forgotten but it seemed like life had other plans for her.
The girl couldn't seem to get rid of the aching emptiness in her heart, just thinking about it was already driving her crazy.
She slumped on the dusty floor as she hugged her legs as she tried to figure out why she had to pay for other people's crimes, did they see her as weak and vulnerable because she was an orphan, and she had no one to back her up?.
Is that why she was caught up in the middle of their drama?
She bit her lips nervously at how they decided to bring her down just because of what her father has caused for them.
It was fine when it was only her in the whole mess because she could just stubbornly refuse to do their orders since she didn't bear her father's name again, this made her free from the punishments that was cast on that name but those spiteful people got her innocent brother involved in the whole mess, thereby making her do as they tell her to do, for his safety and protection.
The thirst and hunger in her didn't even seem to faze her, even as her stomach growled in anticipation for food. Her lips were chapped due to dehydration and her making no effort to do something about it, all she did was to press them tightly together.
She seemed very lost in her own world as she tried figuring out what could have triggered them deciding to kidnap her and leave her here.
It wasn't meant to end like this, she was meant to still fight for the custody, adopt and take care of her little brother since her father abandoned them but now, she couldn't.
Everything she went through, with and without her brother started replying in her mind.
It was so hard to believe that she couldn't achieve what she had been fighting, for the past 5 years for.
She looked up wearily at the window only to realize that it was already dark and nobody even came to check up on her.
As the darkness outside deepened, she realized that no one was coming to check on her. Perhaps that was the plan– to starve her to death or exacerbate her asthma by locking her in this airless room and then planned to use that since it seemed like that could be the most plausible explanation for her death, amongst the two.
By locking her in a dust filled and air-tight room- Just the right thing to trigger her; making her suffer and then leaving her for dead.
In that way they had already killed two birds with one stone. The thought sent a chill down her spine.
She smiled sadly at herself, she was already on the verge of giving up.
As she gazed up at the moon through the small window, on the cold hard, she felt a sense of hopelessness wash over her. She was just a pawn, a chess piece in the game between the two powerful families, and now that she had served her purpose.
She was disposable, just like her mom.
She knew her time had come, as the chilling cold seeped into her bones. A sign of what was to come.
With a blank face, Her eyes, once bright with determination, now read hollowness, emptiness.
She stared at nothing and numbed her brain from those thoughts that wanted to drown her, until she couldn't hold it anymore, she let her exhaustion consume her and fell into a deep sleep.
The girl's raven black hair cascaded around her body, the sheer length and volume, shielded her from the cold of the night and offered a fleeting sense of comfort in the face of the unknown.
