Kat sipped a cup of coffee on the lanai of the Phoenix safe house with Jacob, discussing her reunion with Shane.
She still hadn’t been to sleep and was starting to feel droopy.
“I’m glad you two hit it off,” Jacob smiled. “Family is everything.”

She glanced up to see Ashe striding toward them, an intense look on his face.
“Hugh is back. He’s brought Dale, and there’s an emergency council meeting. Now.”
Kat startled at the fire shifter’s words. “What do you mean Hugh is back?”
“He’s in St. Louis. He’s asking for everyone to come immediately.”
She closed her eyes, feeling his presence there, clear as day.
