Chapter 1
The dim glow of Aiden’s apartment cast shadows across the walls as he closed the door behind Kael. His heart pounded in his chest—not from fear, but from something far more thrilling. Kael’s presence was electric, like a thunderstorm waiting to break.
“You don’t have to stay,” Aiden said softly, his voice barely audible above the rain tapping against the window.
Kael turned, his gaze locking onto Aiden’s with an intensity that left him breathless. “You want me to leave?” he asked, his voice smooth as silk, yet laced with a dangerous edge.
Aiden swallowed hard, his resolve crumbling under Kael’s piercing gaze. “No,” he admitted, his voice trembling.
Kael stepped closer, his movements slow and deliberate, like a predator stalking its prey. The space between them disappeared in an instant, and Aiden’s breath hitched as Kael’s fingertips grazed his jawline.
“You’re not afraid of me, are you?” Kael murmured, his lips mere inches from Aiden’s.
Aiden’s pulse raced, his body betraying him. “Should I be?”
A slow, wicked smile spread across Kael’s lips. “Terrified,” he whispered before capturing Aiden’s mouth in a kiss that was both tender and demanding.
The world around them faded away as Kael’s hands roamed, his touch igniting a fire in Aiden that he hadn’t realized was there. Every brush of skin felt like a spark, every whispered word a promise of something more.
But just as Aiden surrendered completely, Kael pulled back, his eyes glowing faintly in the dim light. “There’s something you need to know,” he said, his voice low and urgent.
“What is it?” Aiden asked, his breathing ragged.
Kael hesitated, his expression torn. “If I stay, I’ll consume you... and I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to stop.”
Aiden couldn’t shake the echo of Kael’s words. “If I stay, I’ll consume you… and I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to stop.” The sentence lingered in the room like smoke—part warning, part promise. Kael’s starry eyes shimmered in the dim light, radiating both inhuman power and a strange, vulnerable tenderness.
Aiden stepped back, his heartbeat loud in his ears. “What… what does that mean, Kael? You’re not human, are you?”
Kael sighed, his fingers brushing against Aiden’s cheek, leaving behind a warmth that sent shivers down his spine. “No,” he admitted, his voice as soft as a whisper. “Not like you.”
Aiden swallowed hard, his mind racing. “Then what are you?”
Kael hesitated, his eyes searching Aiden’s face as if deciding how much truth he could bear. “I’m what your kind would call a Starborne. We’re not meant to form attachments. We feed on… emotion. Passion. Desire. It keeps us alive. But if I take too much from you…” He trailed off, his jaw tightening.
“What happens if you do?” Aiden pressed, his curiosity overpowering his fear.
Kael’s lips curved into a sad smile. “Then I’ll leave you with nothing. You’ll burn out, Aiden. I’d destroy you without meaning to.”
Aiden felt a flicker of defiance rise within him, a rebellion against the fear Kael was trying to instill. “But you haven’t hurt me,” he said softly. “Not yet.”
Kael’s gaze darkened, and he stepped closer, closing the distance between them until Aiden could feel the heat radiating from his body. “That’s because I’m holding back,” Kael said, his voice a low growl. “Every second I’m near you, I’m fighting against what I am. You have no idea how much you tempt me.”
Aiden’s breath hitched as Kael leaned in, his lips hovering inches from his. “Then don’t fight,” Aiden whispered, the words escaping before he could think.
Kael froze, his entire body tensing. For a moment, Aiden thought he might step away, retreat into whatever safe distance he’d tried to keep between them. But then Kael’s resolve broke.
His lips crashed into Aiden’s with a hunger that was both desperate and restrained. The kiss was electric, sending a surge of heat through Aiden’s body as Kael’s hands gripped his waist, pulling him closer. Aiden’s fingers found Kael’s hair, tangling in the soft strands as he surrendered to the overwhelming sensation.
It was intoxicating—dangerously so. Aiden felt as though he were standing on the edge of a cliff, and Kael was the wind urging him to jump.
But just as quickly as it began, Kael tore himself away, his breathing ragged, his hands trembling. “I can’t,” he said, his voice filled with anguish. “You don’t understand what you’re asking of me.”
“Then explain it to me,” Aiden pleaded, his chest heaving.
Kael turned away, his shoulders rigid. “I’ve already broken the rules by coming here. If I take any more from you, I’ll never be able to stop. And if they find out…”
“Who?” Aiden asked, his heart sinking. “Who will find out?”
Kael didn’t answer. Instead, he crossed the room in long, purposeful strides and opened the window, the cold night air rushing in. “I need to leave,” he said, his voice barely audible.
“No!” Aiden grabbed his arm, desperate to hold him there. “You don’t get to drop all this on me and just leave.”
Kael turned back, his eyes filled with pain. “Aiden, this isn’t just about us. If I stay, I’ll put you in danger. And if I lose control…”
“You won’t,” Aiden interrupted, his voice firm despite the chaos in his chest. “I don’t care what you are, Kael. Stay. Let me decide the risk.”
Kael stared at him, his expression torn between longing and fear. For a moment, it seemed like he might give in. But then he stepped back, slipping from Aiden’s grasp. “You’re braver than you know,” Kael said softly. “But some things aren’t worth the cost.”
Before Aiden could respond, Kael vanished into the night, leaving nothing behind but the lingering scent of stardust and the ghost of his touch.
As the silence settled over the room, Aiden’s gaze fell on the mirror across from his bed. For the briefest moment, he thought he saw something—a flicker of movement in the glass, too quick to be real. But when he blinked, it was gone.
And in its place, etched into the foggy surface of the mirror, were two words that sent a chill down his spine:
“Find me.”
