Chieftain Ulric had not been idle since he and the others had been sent away in disgrace a few days before. He had not said anything, but he had observed closely the exchange between Carl and their king. Secretly he had to agree with Carl about the Saurahallers, but he could not possibly admit it. The two had been at odds since they had joined up with Edward, each seeking to better himself in the eyes of the king, and agreeing with Carl would only make his opponent look that much better. Instead, having seen how annoyed Edward was with Carl, Ulric now saw the opportunity he had long sought to eliminate his competitor once and for all.
