Chapter 55: Setting Up Room 305A

1145 Words
Joanna smiled shyly, and she gently took Brian's hand away from her face. She looked him in the eyes and said, "I have a question for you. "You said that you would be away for a week. Why did you come home so early?" "Why would you ask me that?" Brian asked. "Aren't you happy that I'm back?" Joanna blushed. "It doesn't concern me when you return," she said. "Why would it?" Brian pinched her cheek again. "My little fool," he said. "Are you sure it doesn't concern you?" Joanna took his hand and led him towards his car. In an attempt to change the subject, she said, "Let's go have dinner. I'm famished." Brian smiled as he nodded. This was the first time that she'd been the one to suggest they go out for dinner. Typically, it was his idea, and she seldom agreed right away. As Joanna climbed into the car, her phone buzzed. She pulled it out right away, and she saw that she'd received a message from Ben. It said, "Hey Joanna, I just thought you might want to know that our people saw Jane at Injoy Bar with a strange man." Joanna no longer cared about Jane's schedule, but she hadn't had time to tell her people. Thus, she was not sure if she should go there or not. Ken loved Jane, and Joanna couldn't do anything about that. All she could do now was do her best to protect the Green family and try to repay Ken for the kindness he'd shown her in her previous life. Joanna thanked Ben. Then, as she put her phone away, it buzzed again. She sighed, and, thinking the message was from Ken, pulled her phone back out. This time, though, the message was from Betty Green, Ken's sister, who had gone away for school. The message said: "Joanna, I heard that you are going to divorce Ken? Why? Is it because of Jane?" Joanna thought for a few minutes about how to answer the message, and then she wrote: "No. It's because we are not right for each other." Betty didn't like Jane at all. This was because she had seen what a cheap slut she was, and she thought that she had ruined Ken's marriage to Joanna. "You don't need to defend Jane," Betty argued. "I know what kind of woman she is. She sleeps around. She used to hook up with Master Gross, and who knows who else - and now she's after my brother! I won't let her get to him! And I will make her pay for ruining your marriage!" Joanna shivered, and she asked Betty, "What were you saying?" Betty: "Don't worry. I won't let Jane get between you and Ken again." Joanna: "Never mind that. Just tell me who Jane was f*****g?" Betty: "Master Gross for sure. I don't know who else. Why?" Joanna had met Jane a long time ago, at a bar. She had been with her girlfriends, and they'd spotted her with Jared Gross. Joanna wondered - Could Master Gross be Jared Gross? She asked Betty as quickly as she could so that she didn't chicken out and keep her suspicions to herself. Tears welled up in Joanna's eye as she thought about all the pain that Jared had brought into her previous life. Brian began to grind his teeth angrily as he leaned over and read Joanna's last text. She saw how upset she was getting, and he couldn't help but wonder – Who is this Jered Gross? And Why is Joanna getting so upset about him? Betty: "Yes. Jared Gross. Obviously." Joanna: "Okay. Thanks. I gonna go, but we can talk more later." Joanna took a deep breath, and then she sent Ben another message: "Which room is Jane in?" Ben: "305A." Joanna: "Thanks. Now get ahold of the manager. Tell him everything, and let him know that I'm on my way." Ben: "I'm on it." Joanna smiled as she put her phone away, and Brian pulled away quickly so that she wouldn't know that he'd been reading over her shoulder. He smiled and said, innocently, "Are we ready to go for dinner?" Joanna frowned. "I'm sorry, but I need to postpone our date," she replied. "I have to go back into the bar." Brian opened his mouth to argue, but Joanna had already stepped out of the car. She was hurrying towards the bar, and he rushed out after her. Then, when he caught up to her, he grabbed her hand. "I don't know what this is about," he said, "but I will go with you to make sure that you are safe." Joanna shrugged and led Brian into the bar. Upon entry, they asked to speak to the manager. When the manager arrived, he smiled and said, everything's ready." Joanna: "Room 305A?" "Room 305A," the manager replied. "Third floor; turn right when you get off the elevator, and it's the third door on your left."   ***   There were no cameras inside any of the rooms at Injoy, so Brian and Joanna had their work cut out for them. Brian asked the manager to get a mini camera that could be connected to their cell phones. Then he spoke to the waiter that would be delivering the alcohol up to room 305A and asked him to put the mini camera in a corner where it wouldn't be noticeable. Once the camera was set up, Joanna and Brian went into a private room to see what they could see. What they saw was Jane and a man that only Jane recognized. He was the young man that she and Olivia had previously seen f*****g Jane. At the moment, his face was wet, and he was drinking. When Jane whipped the water out of the young man's face, Joanna could see from the expression on her face that she loved him. Joanna found this disconcerting. If she loved this man – she wondered – then why is she maintaining a relationship with Ken? There is something strange about this man – thought Joanna – but what? His smile looked innocent, but maybe too innocent. He had the smile of a child, and his eyes were bright. Nevertheless, even Brian seemed uncomfortable watching him. Suddenly, the door opened, and Matt Grey entered the room. Matt was Jared's assistant. Joanna slowly clenched her fists. Her nails pierced the palms of her hands, and she began to cry. In her previous life, whenever she'd tried to escape from Jared, who had been torturing her to no end, she would be captured and retrieved by Matt Grey. Brian didn't know what it was about Matt that upset Joanna, but he was determined to comfort and protect her. He took her hand, pried open her fingers, and cleaned the blood from her palms. He was about to say something, but Matt began to speak first, and Joanna pressed her fingers to his lips. "Shhhh," she said. "I want to hear this."
