Chapter 31: Why Is She So Shameless?

1134 Words
When Joanna arrived at work the next day, she noticed that Steve was watching her, but she tried to ignore him and pretend that she didn't know anything about his past. Thus, the morning passed by quickly and uneventfully. Then, at noon, Olivia called and told her that the divorce agreement was done. Joanna asked her to send a copy over so that she could take a look. There, if there were no problems, she said that she would call Ken. Joanna and Ken had not been in contact with each other, and she felt that she was better off without him. She assumed that he felt the same because when it was finally time for her to contact him, he ignored her. Then, when she tried again, Jane Wilson answered the phone. Jane: "Ms. Devine, if you and Ken are about to get a divorce, why do you keep calling him? Do you want to get back together with him?" Although Joanna wanted to divorce her husband, she felt uncomfortable talking to Jane about it. After all, why would she want to talk to Ken's lover? Jane was the woman who had destroyed her marriage! "Just put Ken on the phone," Joanna said. Jane snorted. "Why would my Ken answer your phone call?" she asked. "I'm telling you, Joanna. Ken doesn't love you. The person he loves is me. The only reason he married you is that you forced him into it, so don't bother him anymore." Joanna gripped her phone tightly. "Jane," she hissed. "You have no idea what you're talking about." "Whatever." Jane laughed and said, "He's not here, anyway." "Fine," Joanna said. "Just tell him I called." And then she hung up. Jane was so angry that she almost threw the phone against the wall. Why is that b***h so shameless? – she wondered. Ken had already told Joanna that he didn't love her and that he wanted a divorce - so why does she keep calling him? When Ken returned to his office, he saw that Jane was so angry, so he asked her, "What's wrong? What is it?" Jane: "Joanna called. Ken, if you are going to divorce her, why does she still contact you? Why is she so shameless?" Ken frowned. It had been ages since he'd last spoken to Joanna, so he didn't understand why Jane had her panties in a twist. In the past, when Ken came back home at night, Jane always stayed in the kitchen. Then, when she heard the car, she would run outside like a cute rabbit. When he opened the door, she would smile gently and say, "Welcome home." She would prepare the dishes he liked, and although he was never kind to her, she always took care of him. Thus, he was unprepared for this level of neediness from her. Jane had thought that Ken hated Joanna as much as she did, and she said, "Get this, Joanna wants you to call her, and she thinks that you will! What a dumb-dumb!" Then, when Ken said, "Okay, I'll call her back," Jane was stunned. She didn't want to admit that Joanna was much more attractive than she was. She put her arms around his neck, and said coquettishly, "Ken, you aren't falling in love with Joanna, are you? You won't call her back, will you? Please, don't." Ken didn't want to hurt Jane's feelings, so he rubbed her back and said, "If you don't want me to, then I won't." Jane kissed Ken on the lips and asked him if he loved her. When he heard that, he smiled, grabbed her head, and gave her a long deep kiss. After the kiss, he said, "Didn't I prove it to you last night?" Jane blushed, and she pressed her hand against his chest. "Ken," she said. "You're a bad guy." Ken grasped her left breast in his right hand. He gave it a gentle squeeze, and his innocent smile turned into an impish grin. "I thought that was what you like about me," he said. *** It was nearing the end of the workday, and since Ken still hadn't called Joanna back, she sent him a text message to let him know that the divorce agreement was done and ready for his signature. The paperwork was there on her desk, but it gave her no satisfaction. Her gut was telling her that he would not give her the divorce that he'd promised her. Thus, she was surprised when, almost immediately, she received a response from Ken. His text said, "We can go over it tonight at Cilla's. I'll see you at six." Joanna accepted Ken's invitation, and when she arrived at the restaurant, she requested a table by the window on the first floor. Once she was seated, she took the divorce agreement and placed it on the table. When Ken arrived, she wanted it to be the first thing that he saw. That way, he wouldn't get the wrong idea and think that this was a date. *** As chance would have it, Brian and his friend, Andrew, were eating at Cilla's restaurant that evening. Their reservation had been for half-past five, and their table was closer to the kitchen. Brian's head turned sharply as Joanna walked through the door, and his eyes lit up. He knew that he was staring – which was rude, but he couldn't help it. He had become enchanted by Joanna's gorgeous face, independent stride, and elegant temperament. She is one in a million! – thought Brian. Andrew shifted uncomfortably in his seat, and he cleared his throat to get his friend's attention. "What is so special about this girl?" he asked. Brian glanced at him, but he didn't answer. "I wonder who she's waiting for," he said. Andrew shrugged and said, "Time will tell. Anyway, here comes the waiter with our food." Brian nodded. Then, as his steak and lobster were placed in front of him, something happened that caused him to lose his appetite. Ken walked into the restaurant. He spotted Joanna right away, and he went and sat across from her. For the next hour, Brian watched jealously as Joanna and Ken enjoyed a meal together. First, she tried to show him a paper, but he just smiled and shook his head, and she put it back into her briefcase. Then they ordered a bottle of white wine to share. They had escargot and bruschetta to start, and then a chateaubriand for two, with bearnaise sauce, baby potatoes, a steamed vegetable medley, asparagus, and jumbo shrimp. Brian seethed as he watched them eat, and nothing Andrew said could redirect his attention. It wasn't until Joanna brought the paper out again – after dinner – that he felt some semblance of hope.
