Hailey
Why was I suddenly feeling teary by just watching how my son spoke to him excitedly?
The thought couldn't leave my head.
While I was still thinking of a better response to the question that couldn't leave my head, I began to wipe the tears off my cheeks to avoid any further questions.
"Care to explain what exactly is going on here?" Adrian suddenly moved closer to me to ask. His eyes were, however, on Jaxon and Aiden, who chatted away like two old friends.
"What more do I have to say?" I asked without taking my eyes off my son.
"So,what? You expect me to believe that he just woke up, feeling all healthy, and went on a walk with the nurses?" I could feel his stares on me this time.
"Actually, you're right. That was exactly what happened." This time, I turned to look back at him, and I could still see the confusion clearly playing on his face.
"Tch!" Come on, Hailey." He scoffed. “You can do better than this.”
"I really do not understand what sort of explanation you're expecting. My son miraculously got better, and the doctor instructed his nurse to take him for a walk around the hospital and see how well he responds. It was their intention to know if he would have any problem breathing.” I explained, hoping it was enough for him to stop asking questions and just be as happy as I was.
Adrian went quiet for a while instead. I couldn't tell what kind of thoughts were running through his head, but I had a strong belief that he was thinking carefully about what I had said. Although I just hoped I never sounded harsh.
Was it surprising that it could be considered a Christmas miracle?
"That's a relief. Christmas only got better with his quick recovery." He finally responded. I only turned to pass him a soft smile and said nothing after that.
We both stood back and waited for Jaxon and Aiden, who didn't seem like they had gotten enough of their chit chatting. It was in me to cut Aiden from what I felt could be a disturbance to Jaxon. After all, billionaires like his kind were not known to have good relationships with children,so he could be pretending.
Just the sudden thought of that playing in my head pushed me to almost get to them and drag Aiden away from him. However,my plan failed because just as I took a step forward, ready to take another, I felt Adrian stop me. Immediately, I turned to look at him, my eyebrows furrowed.
"Let's go work on the discharge. He would take care of him while we're on it.” He said, a soft, reassuring smile appearing on his face.
I hesitated in doing what he wanted me to do even if I knew it was needed for us to leave the hospital. But I didn't think it was wise that I be blamed because it was as though I was leaving my son in the care of a total stranger.
"He is my best friend, remember? We've been working together for quite a long time." Adrian's grip on my hand was still firm even if his words were a direct response to my thoughts as if he had been listening to my thoughts.
"Well, he's not my best friend, and I've never worked with him, so that is not a yardstick to trust him.” I was stubborn, still not ready to go with him.
"I can't explain if you really have a problem with Jaxon or if it's just one of your trust issues. But please, trust me on this one. Besides, Jaxon has got nothing to gain from this if he kidnaps him or whatever it is you might be thinking. He is a billionaire, remember? " Adrian was ready to go on and on so I could trust him and go with him.
His last statement almost forced me to think he was insinuating my son was not worth a billionaires interest.
Phew!
In the end,I lowered my walls and did as he wanted. The decision wasn't taken because I wanted to give room to trust Jaxon. That wasn't necessary. On a deeper thought, other parents, doctors, and nurses were all over the hospital. An alarm would be raised if there was any foul play.
So soon enough, we were headed to meet the doctor.
More than I had expected, the discharge process was done in a jiffy. Surprisingly, the doctor told us during the time we arrived at his office that the bills had been paid by a good Samaritan.
Just as I was shocked, so was Adrian. We looked from each other, back to the doctor.
“What are you saying?” My question was directed to him.
Despite pleading with the doctor so I could get the details of this good Samaritan, It was all to no avail. According to him…
"He said he needed no one to show him gratitude."
However, it was good to know it was a “he.” And from the message the doctor delivered, I came to the conclusion that the good Samaritan surely sounded like a prideful human. That only boiled my irritation. If he was going to be proud about it,he shouldn't have bothered helping. I never asked for his help either way.
I was hell-bent on finding out who this human was, even if it meant I had to ransack the doctor's office. Although it seemed Adrian knew what I had planned, so, he held me down, thanked the doctor, and drew me out.
"I think we're in for a lot of fun today." We heard the moment we arrived back at Aiden's ward. It was Jaxon. He had Aiden in his arms already, and my little man was already giggling.
"Come here, little man." I moved,my hands stretched to take him into my arms.
"No." He shrugged, a little frown appearing on his face. I jumped back, dumbfounded at his sudden rejection.
"I want to be in Uncle Jaxon's arms for today." He said to my ultimate surprise. Adrian and Jaxon immediately burst into a loud laugh, but that only provoked me. It might seem funny to them, but definitely not to me. I felt my insides boil in anger, and my face was washed up in disappointment. This had never happened before. Aiden has never rejected my arms.
"You were talking about having a lot of fun today, Jaxon. Why was that?” Adrian suddenly asked the moment their laughter died down. I stepped back a bit in a bid to regain my previous self. It would be a shame if Jaxon felt a pride of defeat.
"Oh, that." I could feel him smiling already even if I wasn't staring at him. “My little man here said he would like to get ice cream. And I thought, why don't we have a proper Christmas celebration beyond just over cream at some exclusive place? Just the three of us?" I heard him say. I could feel his eyes moving from Adrian to me.
"No." I was quick to object, my voice coming out harsh and completely objective. I could see how they all stared back at me in confusion and surprise.
"Aiden hasn't fully recovered yet. He still needs to rest." I said immediately as a reason to back up my words.
"But you heard the doctor say he is fully recovered now. You even said so yourself." Adrian turned towards me as he spoke.
"Besides,he wants to go. Right, little man?" I heard Jaxon turn to Aiden, who nodded in acceptance, a large smile on his face.
"Urgh!" I cried inwardly.
