# Heart's Devotion
In the city of Yuncheng, there are four great families, among which the Yun and Qi families hold significant positions. The Yun family has a long and storied history, once serving as the head of the four great families. However, in recent years, it has shown a slight decline. In contrast, the Qi family is a rising star that has firmly established itself in Yuncheng in just over a decade and even exhibits a tendency to rival the Yun family.
The relationship between the Yun and Qi families was initially ordinary. It was only among the younger generation that a closer bond developed, and this was the result of deliberate efforts by both families. Yun Chu and Qi Zhan's fateful connection began in this context.
Yun Chu's father arranged for her to attend school with Qi Zhan, hoping they would develop feelings in advance. Their friendship, however, was rather superficial. Yun Chu often copied books for Qi Zhan, and he would remind her when she dozed off in class and was called out by the teacher. Essentially, they were what one might call "frivolous friends."
Qi Zhan has been a magnet for the opposite s*x since childhood. The girls at school would send him love letters and gifts at a young age. He would always show off in front of Yun Chu, casually tossing her the desserts he didn't like and the sachets he didn't need. Yun Chu couldn't stand his flirtatious behavior of accepting everything that came his way and would question him, "If you don't like them, why do you accept their things?" Qi Zhan would nonchalantly reply, shaking his folding fan, "How can I bear to make a beauty sad?"
Despite this, Yun Chu did benefit from their relationship, as she could often enjoy the chestnut cakes from the popular shop in the east of the city. From this perspective, Qi Zhan was a somewhat qualified childhood sweetheart but hardly an ideal candidate for marriage.
One fine afternoon, with the weather perfect for skipping class, Yun Chu made up an excuse and slipped out. Disguised, she wandered around the street and unexpectedly spotted Qi Zhan. She was about to greet him when she saw him walking hurriedly and turning into an alley. Curiosity got the better of her, and she followed him. After turning a few corners, they stopped in front of a building with a unique style. The plaque upstairs bore the three large characters - "Spring Breeze Pavilion."
Qi Zhan hesitated in front of the door before a girl came up to him, asking if he would like to come in and have some fun. He sidestepped the girl and calmly stated that he was there to find someone. The girl's expression changed, and she coldly informed him that this was not a place to find people and that he should go back and play with his nanny. At that time, although Qi Zhan was popular among the girls, in the eyes of these courtesans, he was just a good-looking young boy.
Yun Chu, who was also dressed as a boy, overheard the exchange. Considering that Qi Zhan had always been nice to her, she couldn't bear to see him being ridiculed. She stepped forward and asked why he couldn't come in to find someone. The girl's face immediately lit up when she saw Yun Chu and invited them both in. Qi Zhan lagged behind Yun Chu by one step, and she could feel his inquiring gaze on her.
Once inside the private room, Qi Zhan remained silent as if it were Yun Chu who wanted to come instead. When the madam of the Spring Breeze Pavilion, Aunt Hong, heard that Yun Chu had arrived, she came to entertain them personally and asked what they wanted. Yun Chu looked at Qi Zhan and signaled for him to speak. After some hesitation, Qi Zhan awkwardly said that he wanted to see the newest girl there.
Aunt Hong left to call for the girls, leaving Yun Chu and Qi Zhan staring at each other. Yun Chu finally broke the silence and asked why he had come here. Qi Zhan, who was about to drink tea, choked and coughed for a while before recovering. Yun Chu thought he looked a bit funny but kindly assured him that she wouldn't tell on him. Qi Zhan, however, didn't answer her question and instead remarked that she often came here. Yun Chu explained that her second brother, Yun Xi, had brought her. Yun Xi was a well-known playboy in the city. Although he had gone to the capital to become an official, his deeds were still talked about in the North City. Yun Chu had been to the Spring Breeze Pavilion many times with her brother, and they were treated as VIPs. Usually, they would just ask the girls to play the zither or dance.
Qi Zhan looked at Yun Chu with an indescribable expression and said that even if she wasn't a proper lady, she should come to this kind of place less often. Yun Chu retorted that she had helped him get in and that he should talk properly. She realized that his so-called gentle and gentlemanly demeanor was only for deceiving other girls.
After a while, Aunt Hong brought a group of girls. They were all new faces with different figures and looks, and the room became lively.
