Chapter 5

1008 Words
Melrose Brown My body aches, my head hurts and I have no idea how long I have been here this time. I haven’t seen anyone for what feels like days, not even a guard. There is a strange energy that has been humming through me tonight as the dusk settles into darkness. The sound of someone coming has me opening my eyes, the heavy door opens as the keys rattle. The huge bulk of a man, one of the pack warriors fills the cell as he removes the chains that hold me up. My body drops to the floor with a thud, the pain in my shoulders has me wanting to throw up, it’s so severe. He scoffs at me, before hoisting me up and over his shoulder, he leaves the cell. The pain that pulses throughout my body has me close my eyes as I hang there from his shoulder like a sack. It’s so degrading but at this point who f*****g cares? Not f*****g me! The cold air has me snapping my eyes open just before he drops me unceremoniously onto the grass. It’s only then I realise I am in the clearing. The huge bonfire is roaring in the middle as pack members stand around talking, ignoring me like I wasn't just dropped half naked, dirty and beaten onto the grass. Before I have too much time to think about it I see them, the click, all three of my biggest nightmares. Zain, Jax, and Madison stand smirking at me; great this is all I need. The first scream comes and it takes me a second to realise it is coming from me. The pain from the shift hits like I have just been hit by a truck at full speed. The breaking and reshaping of my bones is unbearable. The burn of my skin as my fur appears on my arms, feels like I am on fire. At some point the screams turn to a howl and I land on a set of red paws. It takes me a minute to realise that the howl comes from me. That the gasps from the crowd are towards me as they stand watching, a million bright, wide eyes look on as my senses get flooded with far too much. I can smell everything, the trees, the river and the disgusting mix of the packs sweat combined. My wolf looks around, the feeling of wanting to run has her wanting to look for an exit. At first she is slightly wobbly on her paws, but it doesn't take long for her to get the hang of it as she takes off for the treeline. People getting out the way as my newly shifted wolf makes its way to freedom. I hear the paws on the ground following me, I turn slightly to spot the unmistakable black wolf of Jax chasing me. My wolf is fast, faster than his, she’s smaller and more agile. She snaps her jaws at him every time he gets near her. Her emotions fill me, she is mischievous with a wicked streak, this has me laughing; for the first time in a long time I don’t feel alone. I don’t even realise she has managed to use a tree to propel herself over the big black wolf, landing just behind him. I watch in slow motion as she sinks her teeth into the back leg of Jax’s wolf. The taste of his blood is sweet as she takes off again leaving a limping, howling wolf to try catch her. All too soon the dawn breaks and the command comes over the mind-link to return to the clearing. My wolf shakes her head, she tries to fight the command, but eventually she turns a rage in her similar to my own. I have never liked being told what to do either. Getting back to the clearing with Jax wolf snapping at me making sure I do as I am told. My wolf snaps her teeth back, defiance at its best. There are less people now, only newly shifted teens and the higher ranking people standing. The Alpha stands watching me with a curious look on his face. He whispers something to one of the elders, his eyes trained on me as well, he nods in return to whatever the Alpha has just said. I feel like something is off, but before I have too long to think about it the wind changes and the most mouthwatering scent hits me. My wolf's head looks from side to side looking, that's when she spots the source of the scent. The huge dark grey wolf stands in the middle of the clearing, its beady eyes trained on my wolf as she slowly stalks towards him. That’s the moment my heart shatters and the unmistakable bond snaps into place. This can not be happening, why me? My mate, my biggest torturer, the one person I hate more than any other is my mate, Zain. Confusion fills my wolf as he starts to stalk towards us, the bond strongly pulling us like a huge magnet forcing us together. Everything around us seems to have stood still for a minute. Why did I expect anything else from this miserable existence of a life; to be mated to the man who has made it his life mission to torment me. As if realisation dawns on him, his wolf shakes its head as if clearing the haze of the bond, he starts to growl at me. My wolf now only a few meters from the huge growling wolf starts to back up. I see a movement from my peripheral vision as a light brown wolf launches itself at me. Managing to get out of the way before the brown wolf can sink its teeth into me. I turn slamming into the black wolf, Jax, he growls at me just as the brown wolf catches me on the shoulder. Taring a chunk of my red fur from me, I howl in pain, f**k!
