PROLOGUE
"Ariel, are you ready to go?"
"Yes Mr. Smith," I said in a small voice.
To say I was nervous was an understatement. I was shaken. I was going to meet my adopted family. Since the age of three I was in the adoption system. My parents died in a car accident putting me in a children's home. Now I was twelve and they finally got me a permanent family. You could say I have been to all kinds of places since I moved from one foster home to another. I always knew it was because of my chubbiness and my habit of eating but no one ever told me.
"We are here Ariel,"Mr. Smith said as a bronze colored gate opened up to a huge house-MANSION-that screamed money.
I got out of the car in awe as I stared at the house in disbelief. Mr. Smith led me to the front door and rang the bell. A few seconds later it opened up revealing a middle aged woman in the housekeepers outfit.
"Well hello there," she said while looking at me.
"Hello," I said while hugging Mr. Teddy to me.
"Come on in"
The inside of the house was an even better view with a large room that had a chandelier hanging on top. The housekeeper led us to the living room where a young man and woman looking to be in their early 30s sat with a boy about my age. as soon as we made an entry, they all stood up to greet us.
"Mr. Smith, it's good to see you again," the man said giving Mr. Smith a handshake.
The woman did not speak. Her eyes were fully focused on me making me blush. She smiled lightly and introduced herself as Emerald. I told her my name and let her hug me lightly before she introduced me to Alexander her husband.
"Ariel, we are your new family is that okay?" Emerald asked and I nodded in response.
"You can call us mummy and daddy if you like" I only smiled at this and looked at the boy who was know approaching me.
"Hi. My name is Aiden," he said stretching his hand out for me to shake. I shook it politely and kept silent shying away.
He stared at me with his intense blue eyes and smiled before saying,
"I think we'll get along just fine"
It was then I knew I was there to stay.
...
"Ariel! WAKE UP! WE HAVE TO GO TO SCHOOL!" Aiden shouted in my ear as he threw my blankets off me.
It's been two weeks since I got here and things were going great. Well that was until summer break ended and school started. Though I was a straight A grade student, I hated school but today I was a bit excited being my first day. I got out of bed and prepared for school in thirty minutes and I still managed to look like a walking zombie. I wore my blue sundress and held my red chestnut hair in a ponytail applying some lip gloss on my lips. I looked in the mirror twice just to be sure and left for school after breakfast.
"Aiden, I need you to take care of your sister today. Can you do that?"
"Sure mom,"
"Ariel take care of yourself,"
"Yes Mrs.Daw.....I mean mom,"
We got out of the car and walked towards the school building. I could feel the stares as I walked down the front path.
"Eeeeww! I've never seen that much fat on anyone!"
"It's too bad such beautiful hair ended up on such a body"
"Did she come out of the sewers? I think I smelt something!"
I felt the tears building up but I wouldn't let them fall.
"Ignore them," Aiden said and gave me a side hug before one of his friends called him.
That's how I spent the rest of the day alone. Everywhere I went they looked. When I tried talking to someone they would snort and walk away laughing. When lunch period arrived, I walked into the cafeteria with my head down hoping no one would notice me. I guess it wasn't my lucky day.
"Well well well, what do we have here?"
I looked up to see one of the popular boys staring me down with his group of friends backing him up.
"I don't think I've ever seen anything uglier!"
I ignored them and served some of the mac and cheese on my plate.
"Ammm, fatty are you sure you should eat that? You might blow up with all that fat,"
The hall started laughing as everyone listened in.
"Please just leave me alone," I said in a small voice as the tears surfaced again.
"Or what loser? You'll call mummy? You're such a wimp!"
He pushed me to the ground dropping the mac and cheese all over my dress. At that moment, I spotted Aiden running towards me. At sight, the groupie walked away leaving me on the ground teary. Aiden helped me up and took me to the nurse to get cleaned up. I faked a sickness that day and went back home. Luckily, Mr. and Mrs. Dawson were not around to see my state.
I held the locket mom gave me before she died as the tears rolled down my rosy cheeks.
"Mom, If you can hear me, I miss you and am trying my best to be strong but its hard" I said as I fell to the ground.
"Ariel, open up! Please let me in! Am sorry they did that to you!" Aiden said from the other side of the door. I stayed silent and listened to his breaths. finally making a decision, I opened the door. for the first time he hugged me and I cried silently.
"You'll be okay Ari," he said in a small voice and repeated the same words over and over till I stopped crying.
