Pained Heart
Naomi's POV I unlocked the door to Kieran's apartment. It was our anniversary and I wanted to surprise him this time. I was pretty sure he would still be in bed. “Babe? I need you here?” Kieran shouted fondly from the bedroom. I smiled, of course I couldn't do anything without…. “Of course you do?” A soft voice answered, pulling me out of my thoughts. ‘What?’ I took a step further into the sitting room, when I saw a beautiful woman with shoulder-length honey brown hair, wavy at the end and hazel eyes walking out of the kitchen area with a mug in her hand towards the bedroom door, which was a few feet away from her. The sitting room had just one sofa which was sitting in front of the TV set. “And you are?” I whispered, unable to find my confidence. “What the heck?” she shrieked at the sound and quickly backed away, spilling the contents of the mug. “Babe?” Kieran called in a panicked voice, scrambling out of bed. He halted his steps when he saw me. I could hear cracking noises. It was my heart shattering into trillion pieces. “N-Naomi?” he stuttered, staring at me with mixed emotions. I felt fat goblets of tears roll down my cheeks when I met the gaze of the man who was my everything. I laid on the bed staring at the ceiling with my disarrayed thoughts. I couldn't stop the tears that streamed down my face. How was I supposed to move on from such a depressing moment? The worst part was when he tried to defend her, but she got angry that she became the side chick and called him a cheating bastard. “Omi?” My best friend, Melissa, softly called me. “It's been weeks. He doesn't deserve those precious tears, dear,” she said and sat on the bed, close to my legs. I sniffled, avoiding her eyes. “I can't seem to let it go.” I mumbled and wiped away the tears that didn't stop flowing. All thoughts were filled with despair. I couldn't throw away those years as if they meant nothing. “I understand that the pain of being cheated on hurts, especially after giving your all to that person whom you thought loved you the same way. I have had my fair share of heartbreaks in the past before I finally met David, so trust me when I say I understand what you mean,” Melissa sympathized, giving my hand a squeeze. “I gave him my all. I gave him everything. My love, my attention, I even gave up my job because he asked me to when he told me he was jealous of the way other men looked at me at work. I did all this because I loved him and didn’t want to lose him. But look how it turned out,” I felt numb, the emptiness was overwhelming. More tears dropped from my eyes. “I’m sorry, Omi. That guy doesn’t deserve you. He has moved on and so should you. You shouldn’t be the one suffering while he goes about enjoying his life.” Melissa advised, sadness etched on her face. “How can I move on?” I asked, sniffling, the pain was like a knife twisting in my guts. “I know just the way. I have just the cure to heal your broken heart," Melissa suggested, looking unsure. “If another shopping spree is your cure to mending my broken heart, forget about it. The new dresses I got from our last shopping spree is still yet to be worn. " I muttered, wiping my tears away. I was too weak to even sit up. “Who’s talking about a shopping spree? I have something even better, " Melissa gave me a mischievous look and nudged my shoulder a little. I looked away from her. All I wanted to do was wallow in self-pity. “Please!! I don't want to go without you. I want you there for my sake. How do you expect me to leave you here and go have fun all by myself? How could I?” she rambled on and on. I cleared my throat and slowly sat up to look at her. "Tell me about it." I said in a small voice, making her smile widen. She knew she had got me. “So, there’s this masquerade party that David’s boss and CEO organizes once or twice a year. Tonight is one of those times," she explained. “A masquerade party?” I questioned, my gaze meeting hers again. “Yes. Although you won’t be able to see faces, you should be able to meet some guys, have fun, and forget all about this Kieran nonsense,” Melissa scrunched up her nose at her last words. I would have laughed at her facial expression on some other day. “I'm not sure about the meeting guys aspect though. I’m not interested.” I said in irritation. “Alright, fine, just have fun. Or better still, have pity on this mattress, it suffered enough.” she persuaded. “Fine,” I agreed, heaving a heavy sigh. Melissa swiftly turned her head to look at me, with a surprised look on her face. “You’ll go?” She asked me, full of hope. “I’ll need all the drinks and fun I can get tonight to get my mind off Kieran.” I said, letting myself fall back on my bed as I returned my gaze to the ceiling. Deep down I just wanted to drown myself in alcohol. “I thought this was going to be hard. Anyway, I’m glad that you are seeing things from my perspective. The party will begin by 8 pm, so we’ll start preparing at 6pm. I’m going to do your hair and make-up and look for a sexy gown to go with it, you must slay tonight,” Melissa happily said and got up to leave. I could feel her eyes on me for a few seconds towards the door. “Omi?” she called me. I was weak from shedding lots of tears, so I just turned my head to the direction of the door silently. "It's his loss, you know that, right? Don't make him turn you into someone you are not. I miss my best friend." she said, then Reo, her cat, meowed as if to confirm her words. I didn't even notice him until now. Her words triggered the tears again, but I held them back. "I can't wait to rock this party, whoa!!" she screamed with sheer excitement and rocked her hips before closing the door. I smiled a little at that. Crazy Mel! I missed her. She came back as promised and two and half hours later, we were ready. "You girls look hot." David winked at us from the rearview mirror as we settled in the car. He had rented a car just for tonight. Melissa decided to stay close to me, so she took the back seat with me. I knew they were trying to cheer me up, so I promised myself to have a good time instead of what I intially planned. We got there and wore our masks before stepping out of the car. I was in awe of the exterior arrangement for the event. There was a red carpet and the lighting was already making me nervous. Melissa linked her arms with mine and did the same with David by her side. Pixel Chandeliers illuminated the interior, creating the perfect ambiance. After the party began, Melissa dragged us to the dance floor. “Let's party.” She threw her hands up and began dancing to the hip-hop that was playing in the background. Some hours later, I slipped away from the main party ground to a solitary place along with my 3rd glass of wine in hand. On getting away, I gently pushed the door closed and tried to steady myself, but I tripped. Instead of hitting the hard floor, a strong pair of hands prevented me and my glass of wine from hitting the hard floor. “Do you mind if I join you?” the stranger whispered, his breath warm against her ear.
